IMO Apple will setup the system so each iP4 bought before Sept 30 will get a free bumper. So when you go to the store they will cross reference the receipt for your bumper with the serial number of your iPhone that way each iPhone can only get 1 free bumper.

If you have an official Apple bumper or some other case sold in Apples store then you may to be able to bypass the receipt part because your iPhones serial will show it's free case hasn't be redeemed, but thats a BIG IF.

But more so on topic, the point is you want to buy a case now while supplies are still out there vs. waiting on Apple's Priority List for weeks hoping to get a bumper once they have over 1 million orders placed.

Too late. Should have ordered one last night.

Apple iPhone 4 Bumper - Black
iPhone 4 Bumpers are currently unavailable for sale.

Apple will offer a free iPhone 4 Bumper or other select cases to iPhone 4 customers. Details on how to order a free Bumper or case will be available soon on apple.com.

Tried to order a bumper wont work.

Will do, just keep monitoring your order status. If it gets cancelled they will send you an e-mail. I believe they will honor all orders already in the system. They are probably making bumpers "unavailable" henceforth to prepare for the free bumper/case onslaught that is forthcoming.

you're probably right. im just worried im going to end up with a colour i dont want. i need my sky blue one!!.

As someone who is deeply invested in apple stock, i wish that only people with problems would get their free case or refund. Kinda hate what this might mean for earnings.

I look at it this way. I bought a bumper before the conference knowing there would likely be one. I don't need a refund or a different case. Let the cheap asses get theirs. :D;)

Even if you assume every iPhone 4 owner gets a case, it's not that much money (at least to Apple) - and that's if you look at the retail cost of these cases.

Apple will be getting them for much less than the retail cost.

Just watched the antenna video on Apple.com demonstrating the drops on other phones when gripping the antennas. I am satisfied with that demonstraation. But I never considered giving up my iPhone anyway. Like Steve said, it's the best.

So an analyst is speculating? Still nothing for sure.

I don't see any hard facts either but I don't think the manufacturing cost for a bumper could be higher than $3-$5. Mold design and injection machines are not that expensive for a Chinese manufacturer. Steve said today they planned on selling some for a profit and I don't think they had a couple dollars per bumper in mind.

As far as this guy being all noble, it's his choice but don't act like Apple didn't gamble a little on an entirely new antenna design. He admitted they are not perfect, the new iPhone antenna is not perfect and they will continue to revise the design until it is. They are not trying to make everyone look like a complainer, they are simply saying that a free case might help people that are having real problems. Apple knew they antenna was different and there is no way they can control how WEAK at&t's network is in a lot of places.

So an analyst is speculating? Still nothing for sure.

Several analysts have the same speculation. They forecast these things for a living. It's not like the bumper is some complex piece of electronics like the iPhone...it is a piece of plastic and rubber. Their estimates are going to be fairly accurate. They may be off by a few cents in either direction but they are in the ball park. I will concede that unfortunately, unless Apple opens up their books and tells us what they cost, we will never know the exact figure.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and say they are way off. Let's double the estimate to $2 per bumper. I'll even go to $5 a bumper (even though that is definitely way too high). Does that change any point I made? Not really. The percentage of the markup I stated drops but it is still very high even at $5 per unit so all my other points are still valid.

Regardless of the cases they offer, it's going to have a big impact on the overall case market. The manufacturers who aren't selected are suddenly competing against 'free' product. Even if they take the 'higher quality' angle, a lot of people will have a hard time dropping $25+ if there is something they can live with for free.

It'll put downward pressure on pricing...especially given the markup on accessories is huge anyway.

If I were a better person, I'd bet the 'approved' manufacturers will be the usual suspects who already sell through AT&T.... incipio, speck, body glove, etc and it'll be all their mainline $20-29 product.

Those dreaming of premium cases are just dreaming. I doubt Apple will foot the bill for any free case that retails for more than the $29 the Bumper retails for.

I did not save my receipt for my Bumper, how will Apple address refunds?

I don't expect that many of you saved your Bumper receipts either.

How will we get our refunds?? Please let me know.

I save all of my Apple bags, & my receipt was left in the bag because I had no reason to look at it. :D

Good luck, though! I'm sure they'll have some solution to this.

Thank God Steve stood up for what's right. And along those lines, I am perfectly happy with my iPhone 4 and the Bumper I bought on Day 1 and don't want Apple's money at all. I wasn't raised to take money I don't deserve. In fact, I'd like them to charge me an additional $29.00 to offset someone else's free case if that's what it takes as a gesture to show Apple how happy we are with what they do for us.

Look what we're doing to Apple. We can't let this happen.

Posted from my iPhone 4

hahhahaha pmsl

Serial number, if you have a vaild serial number they will register it to a bumper and send one out to you, if you try ordering another one they will see that you were already sent one. This is the way they handled the power adapter for the original iphone 3g that was recalled.

You are missing the point.

What Apple has done for us in terms of mobile technology has been nothing short of miraculous, and we do not want them to believe that we are naive ingrates that can be fooled by bloggers and their Jedi mind-tricks. I dare you to name a single consumer electronics product ever released that is as good as the iPhone 4. You can't. For every mention of "death grip" there needs to be 100 mentions of everything else great about the product to put it in perspective.

I urge all iPhone 4 customers to join me. Don't accept a refund for a great product. Show Apple we're on their side. Let them have the $29.00 as a show of support towards designing and engineering the next great Apple product.

BJ

This is one of the funniest posts i've ever read. I'd swear it was a piss take if i wasn't painfully aware that people like you exist :D
