But shouldn't I be eligible for early upgrade pricing at some point before 1/16/10, when I am eligible for a full subsidy?

I agree. This is not the typical whiner "AT&T screwed me because I signed a contract" post.

He wants to pay the higher "early upgrade" price, not the full subsidy price. I was eligible for that immediately after I purchased my phone years ago and everybody else posting here has stated they were also.

So what gives? Do you have an iPhone plan on your account?

Someone posted recently that at&t said if you used the early upgrade price in the last 18 months you wouldn't be eligible for it again.

I know there are many who were NEW to AT&T when the 3GS launch, pay less than $100 a month (I pay $95), and are already eligible for a FULL subsidy on the 4.

This can't be right if they bought the 3GS at launch. They'd only be eligible for a full subsidy if the line is over $100/month.

this might be a dumb question, but i am planning on ordering my iphone 4 on the 15th. i am not eligible so i will be paying 400 for mine. cant i walk into ATT later that week and pick up another iphone 4 for 400 and extend my contract for two years from that day? it wont be a big deal since itll be extended on the 24th, then say on the 29th. if an unlock is out i could unlock it and make a good amount of money. please share your thoughts!

I used an early upgrade to get my 3GS last August (had the 3G).

I wan't to upgrade to iPhone 4, but I'm not eligible for early upgrade (399/499) pricing.

Why?

I know there are many who were NEW to AT&T when the 3GS launch, pay less than $100 a month (I pay $95), and are already eligible for a FULL subsidy on the 4. I'd be perfectly happy with early upgrade pricing.

I tried calling AT&T. They said they never had heard of early upgrades.
I tried emailing AT&T. They said that do to high demand my only option is full, no commitment pricing (nice try).

I'm not trying to be cheap, but I just don't understand why I'm not eligible? I know there are some others in the same boat as me.

Heres what I get when checking my eligibility.

Text: "You may select equipment at our full retail pricing. An upgrade may be available on 01/16/2011."

Online: iPhone Upgrade
You can take advantage of our no commitment pricing at a participating retail sales location. You may qualify for a full discount on a standard iPhone upgrade on 01/16/2011 *

at the least you DO qualify for the discounted 399/499 prices not until AUGUST though...maybe sooner but August at the latest

why do these stupid questions come up every June?

Have a question and I don't think it falls into
the STUPID category as it is a little different...

I did buy the 3GS last year and I am not eligible for
the early upgrade.

However, when I bought that 3GS I bought it for full
price ($500) since I was still a year into my contract
from iPhone #2 purchase.

So that $500 purchase last year still does not buy me
into eligibility for a discount upgrade?

why do these stupid questions come up every June?

and why do people have to be rude to the posters asking the questions? why not just ignore them (why didn't i just ignore you?)

i completely understand why there are so many posts and it really IS at$t fault... because the are INCONSISTANT! joe blow who's only had his 3GS for 9 months gets full subsidy while jill jerk doesn't and she upgraded 1 year ago... i can see why there are sooooooooo many questions and they why's, etc don't make sense...

but really.... do was have to be rude to the people asking the questions... you don't like their thread then stay out or move on to the next thread that you DO like the question.... really... it's easy....

the whole 2 year contract deal has been around for years with all carriers. the deal is a 2 year contract with 18 months early upgrade. if you want a new iphone every year than pay the $600 or whatever the insane price is. every year it seems the same kids come back and complain how they can't get a new iphone with discounted pricing every year

there are very few apps that require a 3GS in the app store so unless i get a very good trade in value for mine i'll stay with my 3GS and not worry about. and just buy a new one for my wife since she's on a 3G. what exactly will the iphone 4 do come July that my 3GS won't do?

regarding the use of FAN discounts

i currently am not with ATT but will be preordering the iphone from apple and doing the activation and whatnot at home. is there somewhere i can enter the FAN# during the activation process on iTunes or from Apple's website? i would like to have the discounted pricing begin w/ the first billing cycle...

500 sounds like the discounted price... you have a 32GB? if so you got a new contract with that...that's not the full retail price

uhhh facetime video conferencing, HD video recording, and there's a flash on the Camera too...I don't think your 3GS does any of those things

No but as soon as you are all setup in the system, you can go to this web page and start the process. Just follow the instructions and provide a valid email address from the email domain that provides your discount.

https://www.wireless.att.com/business/authenticate/

You will need to complete the confirmation process and the FAN will be added to your account. Note: it says multiple billing cycles but in many cases it may be applied to the first cycle.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Not true. You can get iPhone every year with 399/499 price not 599/699. The latter is only if you don't want to sign up for 2-yr plan. I've been upgrading my iPhone every year.

If you are an existing customer, it is 1 iPhone per line.
What if you have one currently and you plan on buying two on the 15th? I have planned on adding my wife to my AT&T account when the new Iphone came out and getting her an Iphone as well as me a new Iphone at the same time. This makes it sound like we're SOL - only I'll be able to get the new Iphone and we'll have to wait until we can buy one individually for her. I can't believe AT&T would be that stupid (well . . .)

Can I add the family plan and a second line early, like today, in preparation for pre-orders on Monday? Wow, is this confusing.

i was waiting for video calling but apple's facetime is useless. my mom is on t-mob and until skype comes out out with a video over 3G calling app i don't see the point of facetime. except for chatroulette.

HD video and camera is nice but not enough to make me spend an extra $200 or $300 instead of waiting another year. same with the screen.

but the OP wants a new one for $199/$299 every year

AT&T store pickup

In NYC and there's no way I'm going to an Apple store, it will be ridiculously packed.

Say I choose the option to pick up my iPhone 4 at an AT&T location, does anyone anticipate that I'll be waiting for a long time?

Or maybe I should just get it delivered to my office on release date?

Hey op I dunno maybe you've paid your bill late or you've smarted off to one too many ATT reps? I dunno when I got my iPhone 3GS on launch as a new customer I only had minimum voice w/ no text. About 3 months into it I added txting ($5 / plan) and for the past 4 months i've had their $15 dollar plan. w/ 15% fan discount my bill is roughly 86 bucks after taxes and i'm eligible for full subsidy...so I dunno what to tell you but..good luck.
