this might be a dumb question, but i am planning on ordering my iphone 4 on the 15th. i am not eligible so i will be paying 400 for mine. cant i walk into ATT later that week and pick up another iphone 4 for 400 and extend my contract for two years from that day? it wont be a big deal since itll be extended on the 24th, then say on the 29th. if an unlock is out i could unlock it and make a good amount of money. please share your thoughts!

anyone know?

Looking at the whole early upgrade situation i'm glad that i cannot get the early upgrade pricing. I would rather pay full price for this one and then get my discount next year when iPhone 5 comes out. :D

I feel bad for all of these people getting the upgrade early because next year they will have to pay full price for the iPhone. I think alot of people getting wrapped up in the hype don't realize that.

I bought the 3G at launch. I did not have an original iPhone and my account wasn't upgrade eligible, so I paid the early upgrade price, not the full upgrade price. I did not become eligible for an upgrade until 03/2010. I could have bought the 3GS for the $399/499 price, but that would have pushed my full upgrade to 2011. I just stuck with the 3G to get the 4 at the full discount.

NO! He doesn't. He wants one at the $399/$499 prices. Everyone keeps blowing him off as if he's being too greedy, but they don't fully understand the issue.

now he sounds like one of the geniuses who keeps on trading in a car at a loss and getting an upside down loan. at some point you have to pay off what you bought

there's no consistent formula...I bought all three iPhones at launch and I'm still eligible for a FULL upgrade on the 24th....and I almost always pay my bill late

^ That link says the exact opposite of what the OP is seeing. FTA:

So where is the OP's early upgrade?

Ok, some people are confusing the difference between the 3 tiers of iPhone pricing:

New & Upgrade ELIGIBLE (the date AT&T offers full discount, the DATE OP IS TALKING ABOUT)
Early Upgrade
No Contract

http://obamapacman.com/2010/06/iphone-4-att-pricing-new-upgrade-no-contract-prices/

Have a question and I don't think it falls into
the STUPID category as it is a little different...

I did buy the 3GS last year and I am not eligible for
the early upgrade.

However, when I bought that 3GS I bought it for full
price ($500) since I was still a year into my contract
from iPhone #2 purchase.

So that $500 purchase last year still does not buy me
into eligibility for a discount upgrade?

$500 is the early upgrade price.

So why does he complaining that he can't get early upgrade 399/499? I think he can but doesn't know because when he texted *639# he got a message showing he can only upgrade with full retail price.
I think all 3GS owners can upgrade with 399/499. The same as last year.

Help!

Two questions for a new AT&T subscriber

1. If I buy in the Apple store as a new subscriber, do they open up the phone and activate it there or give me the phone and I go home to activate it?

2. What does it mean you cannot use debit cards? Does that mean my debit card with a Visa logo on it cannot be ran as credit? I read somewhere that someone thought the system would know and boot the order when it goes to charge and ship.

I believe that if I was eligible for the 399/499 price it should say "we can offer you an upgrade at a discounted price"... Unless the system that let's you check eligibility is not accurate.

I have a Family plan with 2 lines my voice package is 59.99, my upgrade(iPhone) is 2/20/2011, but each of the other 2 lines are upgrade eligible in 11/2010. Can i use one of the other lines to get iPhone 4 and then get it switched to my non-eligible iPhone line?

OK just got back from my local AT&T store to confirm what upgrade route I can take. The two lines on my plan that have 11/07/2010 eligible dates don't qualify for new iPhone since they are not currently iPhone's, am I just mistaken I thought it didn't matter what the current phone was?? My only option left seems to be adding a line and swapping!!

Truth?

I asked that same question at the at&t store and they said I could use a debit card to pre-order if i used it as "credit", not sure how that is done??

1. They activate it in store

2. Credit vs Debit - If you have a debit card from your bank with a MC/Visa logo, they can run it one of 2 ways:
A) Debit - you enter your PIN (This is what they are saying they won't do)
B) Credit - It gets processed as a MC/Visa (This they will accept)

I can't imagine there are many in existence anymore, but long ago bank debit cards did not run as MC/Visa. You had to use the PIN.

Very weird.
I just spoke to an AT&T rep on the phone.
She told me since I did an early upgrade last june to get the iphone 3GS I can only pay full price to get the new iphone.
In February I will be due for an early upgrade and June 2011 I will be due for a full subsidy.
Does that make any sense?
at 18 months an early upgrade and a full upgrade at 22 months into your contract?
WTF, instead of getting answers I got more confused now.
Why cant I get an early upgrade one year since my last?
It will be cheaper to cancell my contract and pay the $120 ETF than pay full price for an iphone 4.

I'll admit I didn't read the whole thread, so if this has already been answered I apologise.

The early upgrade policy is as simple as:

You are eligible for early upgrade pricing once in each 12 month period.

If they are trying to tell you something different than that, fight them tooth and nail.

To me, the old cards without the MC/Visa logos were just considered ATM cards.

I honestly don't know anyone or any bank would have a "debit" card without the logo. All debit cards should be able to get swiped as credit.

how do you know this for sure? This will be my first early upgrade so I hope I don't get screwed next year when I go to do another early upgrade..

Because 1) that's how it has always worked for me, 2) it is (or was, possibly) AT&T's published policy, 3) I haven't seen anything that has changed.

Hoping to get some clarification here...

I currently have an individual ATT plan, using a 3gs (purchased on launch day, eligible for upgrade). I'm planning on switching over to a family members family plan and getting the 4 on launch day. They have two lines on the plan right now, both of which are iPhones.

1. Will adding me to their plan change their upgrade eligibility?

2. What would be the initial cost to add me (excluding my ETF)?

3. What would it cost for my line per month?

it might be the case for you because of how much your bill is - similar to how ATT chooses who is available for a full upgrade after 12 months. I hope it is every 12 months for everyone but after hearing many people say that its once every 18 months its a little unsettling.

TRUE or FALSE???

if you didnt buy before 09 august you have to pay

a lot of people dont understand anything about att's new upgrading. they are giving people an early upgrade if you contract ENDS in 2010. meaning the latest you could have bought was july 31 2009. why? well its basicly giving the biggest :apple: fanboys the upgrade. if you bought after july your not a "fanboy" any way it's your fault you signed to get an upgrade 18 month and that is what you get. also if you change/cancel it is also your fault.

i just wanted to make this thread cause it seems a lot of people dont understand the difference between you get a 6 month early upgrade compared to 6 months after the phone comes out.

Ok I have 3 questions/clarifications.

Can I use the upgrade eligibility of another phone line in the family plan IF THAT LINE DOES NOT HAVE A DATA PLAN?
-I'm assuming the answer is Yes, but I just wanted to make sure.

Also, Steve said that anyone eligible within the next 6 months can get an iPhone for 199. The phone line I want to use to get the upgrade says this

iPhone Upgrade
As a valued AT&T customer, we can offer you a discounted iPhone upgrade at a higher price, along with a 2-year commitment and an $18 upgrade fee. Please proceed with the online upgrade process for pricing details. You may qualify for a full discount on a standard iPhone upgrade on 08/30/2010

Also, How can I pre-order the phone using this setup? Don't I have to provide a phone number when I pre-order so they know how much to charge me?

Has ATT just not upgraded their website yet? Or is the 6 month period only for current iphone customers?
