[Merged] HTC Desire - Android Smartphone w/AMOLED screen, SenseUI, 5MP Camera

I'm on my second iPhone and I just reached the stage when I think that it's immoral for me to have it.

I use a dedicated GPS in the car. I have other iPods/music players without iTunes addiction (I hate itunes). I hardly use most apps now, although at one point, it would be nice to finish GTA.

But most importantly, because the battery sucks, I don't use it as a phone, I'm still using my older Nokia 6300 for making calls.

If I didn't have free mobile internet with mine (O2 PAYG), I would have already sold it.

But the most important factor why I want to sell it is because Apple is really starting to piss me off. I am sick of stupid ties and limitations. If I didn't have a MacBook Pro's worth of software purchased and installed on two Macs, I would already be on a Windows machine, I think. I actually miss Winamp, Total Commander and a decent file management system and matte screens.

For a long time, I was looking forward to the iPad release. Then Apple launched THAT thing for THAT much?! With THOSE limitations?! What the hell?! I think computing should be going towards open and affordable devices. The last few MacBook and MacBook Pro updates were almost insulting and the same applies to the iPhone 3GS/iPod Touch too.

So I think my next Apple purchase will be an iPod Touch with a camera OR NOTHING.

Im in the same boat with a lot of what you had to say. I too even thought of going to a windows machine. Maybe it's the hard times or just getting older and realizing cost & effect.

Another rant by me...

Anyone care to remind me what the iPhone is? For the last two years, I held it to be the greatest device ever to have been created, and only to get better. But because of Android, I'm getting the impression that all the apps on iPhone can also be used on an iPod Touch. This basically led me to the thought process that getting an iPod Touch (free; with a MBP) would be enough to quench my app needs. The next build of Android (Froyo) comes with built-in tethering, so tethering an iPod Touch would be rather useful. PLUS, the customization of Android (+HTC Sense).

Anyways, I'm probably still gonna end up with iPhone 4, then getting the HTC Desire off-contract for the hell of it.

What say you? Leave thy comment. :D
Three years after the release of the iPhone and iPod touch and you just now realize they can use the same apps?

And just because Android 2.2 has built-in tethering, don't think that every carrier will let you use it. The iPhone has built-in tethering, too, you know... But AT&T in the U.S. turns it off. And they could do the same thing with Android 2.2, too.

I've got a Verizon Droid, but I had to root it to enable tethering. Same with my iPhone on AT&T. Either carrier could enable tethering at the push of a button (more or less), but they don't. So don't mistake a device's capability to do something with your ability to use it - at least not when it comes to the cell carriers.

According to HTC's spec sheet, the current Android 2.1-based Desire has tethering support. The instructions say that you need HTC Sync (for Windows) so I don't know how well it works with OS X's built-in support.

Like the poster above said... Just because the specs says it supports tethering doesn't mean you could actually do it. Not without hacks, anyway.

To add to the previous post. If Android 2.2 does support wireless tethering, it's likely only the Nexus One would support it. N1 is the only Android phone that can be updated without carrier influence.

Wow, this may be my most well-recieved thread yet.

Anyways, yeah, I probably WILL be back, but I dunno why. I WANT the Desire/Evo, but the iPhone has some hook on me (The iPhone's Unrealized App: Voodoo  ). Guess I'll just wait 'till iPhone 4 is announced... I' sure Mr. Jobs has something that can influence me. :D

By the way, anyone here with actual Experience (at least a week) with Android? How's the Market looking?

Seriously,

What are these "limitations" that people talk about? Everything i have wanted to do one my phone I have done except having custom sounds for text message?

I hear people whine and whine and whine about Apple and it's limitations. WHAT LIMITATIONS!?

1) Flash? My god, your android doesn't have it yet. and have you actually watched yourself use a mobile phone? do you know how many flash sites you really go to?

2) The banning of porn on iphone apps? ....it's called *******. Use it!

3) It's still a phone. It does internet. Apps, its second to none when it comes apps. I tried to find equivalent apps on the Andriod and no go.

It's by far the cleanest interface. And you know what, most people who truly are being all whiney about their iphone...its because guy A says and guy b is following guy A because he's a tool.

The Android vs Iphone OS is a dumb conversation and really.... everything people whine about its really something small...and if apple fixed it, you would never use it. It's like MMS. i have only sent 5 pictures EVER!!!!

only thing i do like is copy/paste.

If you are gonna find reason to go to Andriod. make it because Att's network sucks balls. Not because of this open platform BS. Do you even know what Open means?

Food for thought. Also, I respect your opinion and love the input you put on these boards. But for a APPLE IPHONE message board, what is up with people posting crap about their android phones?

I used it for about a week. It was fine for me except for the apps. As of now it's severely lacking.

Who cares if you don't like a device anymore. In that case shop for a new device and go forth with your life. At the end of the day we are talking muti functional cell phones. So what ever floats your boat and what ever floats mine.

I might get flamed for this but I still prefer Symbian to the iPhone OS.

I mean the iPhone has an incredible smoothness, feel, UI and attention to small details in the UI(disappearing scrolls, bounce, when you start to scroll nothing gets highlighted "selected" - on Nokias when you start scrolling wherever you tab your finger get's "highlighted" as if it's about to be ran.)

Symbian is very rough and not a very nice looking OS but it is incredible "integrated" and powerful... the SIP support is built in, you can use the Nokia Suite or just connect it as a "Removable Storage", it has built in tethering, USB-OTG, true multitasking, you can do lots of things with bluetooth... share a contact, send a file, share a picture... whatever you want, Symbian's built in alarm is leaps and bounds better, you MUST use the bloated iTunes with the iPhone, you just can't drag and drop the files(Removable Storage), no built in file explorer... feel in less control, no mkv/divx/xvid support, can you use the iPhone as a webcam? Symbian has an app for that(Mobiola Webcam) that allows through the use of bluetooth to turn it into a webcam, minimum hassle, great NES/Sega emulators, Nokia's "Notes" app allows for phone # parsing and offers with adding to contacts both dialing messaging, iPhone's only offers adding to contacts and dialing...... you know these small things make a difference.

The standby/sleep clock on the Symbian Nokia phones is also very, very handy... iPhone's screen just turns off.

Symbian applications feel more integrated within each other... the iPhone apps feel more like isolated "capsules".

Of course there are tons of thinks the iPhone OS does just brilliantly: copy/cut/paste and text selection implementation, keyboard, Symbian does not have a timer or a stopwatch built in, mp3 player is great, the UI in general is just awesome.

Functionally IMO Symbian is more powerful, but the UI is not that good.

Say what? The iPad launched at a far cheaper price than anybody expected.

Oh yes, when what 'everybody' expected had 2GB of RAM, not 256MB, 80GB of storage space rather than 16GB and a fully featured desktop OS, not the iPhone OS; not even mentioning the lack of USB... but I perhaps went through this too many times already.

I don't think this word means what you think it does.

No, I'm fairly comfortable with it. A £340 device is an overkill, unless you use it for its primary purpose. I don't because I cannot rely on its poor GPS, the battery doesn't last as many calls as I need it for and uploading a few new songs on it takes ages. That 2Mp camera is not enough for anything - it's so basic. Just as well, I could use an iPod Touch.

I pay people for doing various jobs for me. When I see their hard work and think about the cost of my stupid gadget, I wonder, how we got such an empty life that a piece of technology matters so much.

There is nothing wrong with a bit of frugality and that's what I will aim for in the future.

I am not sure whether you replied to me, but since I used the terms 'limitations' and 'open', I take it that I can reflect on your opinion.

Limitation in a way is something that makes you spend hours researching of how to jailbreak your phone, just to unlock some file functions and command lines. Limitation is to know that basic music players can feature nice and simple ways to drag and drop music files, videos and photos, but Apple is forcing iPhone users to use iTunes for upgrades and syncing. However you call these annoyances, it stopped me from listening to music on my iPhone completely as it takes just too much effort to keep the phone's calendar and contacts updated and the music collection fresh.

Flash is a real issue. I have business partners with websites that feature some Flash features. I need a computer to check a simple thing on their sites?!

I don't watch porn on the iPhone, I suppose you have to be pretty desperate to do it on a small screen.

I actually am often "truly whiney" about the iPhone, but it has nothing to do for me being a tool (you must try harder the next time) or my friends telling things. I can decide what I expect from the iPhone.

But trust me, the number of people feeling like me is growing fast.

There you go again, mistaking your opinion for what "everybody" else was thinking. Astound me with some proof that most people were thinking the iPad would ship with those specs.

Wow, this may be my most well-recieved thread yet.

For work purposes, in addition to my iPhone, I also have a nexus 1 and an incredible. Besides the drop down notification bar, I prefer almost everything else on my iPhone compared to my Android devices. Things like the music player, on screen keyboard, email client, apps, ease of use, and general OS polish are better on the iPhone. It's the iPhone I always find myself reaching for when I need to get things done.

It took me about two weeks to get sick of the widgets.

I own a blackberry at the moment but have an iPhone for data only. I've had android devices but I like having a physical keyboard.

I think the iPhone is great but I think many are getting bored with it.

Don't mistake bored for excellence in simplicity. I think a lot of people are missing this point far too much. There were many phones that did what the iPhone did before it, but most of the time the execution was just awful. I'm not saying this is the case with android, however somewhere in the argument these days the iPhone's ease of use gets lost or thrown in as a yea so what it's easy to use. It's one of its killer features along with everything it does. I'll continue to be "bored" with my iPhone. I do like some things on the android platform, but I like living without those things for what I have on the iPhone.

Like the poster above said... Just because the specs says it supports tethering doesn't mean you could actually do it. Not without hacks, anyway.

The intent of my post was to ask whether HTC's tethering solution is compatible with OS X. It has nothing to do with AT&T's restrictions (there are no such restrictions with my current operator).

Heres a few Gripes i have about the Droid/HTC phones in general

Open source. its nce but I have yet to find any apps from what ive seen on other friends phones that i know that stand out and say wow I mean there good but in terms of UI etc they always seem half assed. I just dont know if thats how the SKD's are built or just the lack of the effort on devs and them felling they will make more on the iPhone app store.

Second With all the diffrent Devices It seems like the phones out dated in a month look at the nexus 1 everyone was saying this was supose to be the iPhone killer etc. now it looks like its been a flop and google is no longer officially selling it.

I couldnt go with an ipod Touch and also carrying another cellphone.
Thats the main reason I got the iphone.
No need for having a cellphone, an ipod, a laptop, a GPS unit, a PDA etc....
Its all in one, but to each his own I guess.

The intent of my post was to ask whether HTC's tethering solution is compatible with OS X. It has nothing to do with AT&T's restrictions (there are no such restrictions with my current operator).

You're lucky you are not in the US then :D

Will those of you that are whining and crying about at&t and apple and wanting to go to another phone please do it ffs.

No one cares, just do it and be done with it. No need to come and make a thread about how you MIGHT do it. No need to come and make a thread asking others what they think of you MAYBE doing it. Let the other nut drop, man up and freakin do it already. Then go join that phones forum so they can see you whine about what that phone doesn't do and how you're going to switch to another phone/carrier.

There is a really easy answer for all of you whining..... MOVE ON! I don't understand why people would spend so much time crying about a phone/carrier instead of just fixing the problem.

My HTC Desire is being delivered on the 24th. I, can't, wait!

I think it's the first true iPhone killer.

sent mine back after a few days, loved the colour and black levels of the screen, but all the little things like the music app not being able to sync properly like ipod (had hours of headaches trying) things like choppy scrolling , and this is evident on ALL desires as i played with about 4 in stores to see if it was just mine, the app store, itunes and a smooth ui made me stick to the iphone, desire is easily 2nd best though and some may prefer it, it may be faster but when things are choppy the iphone just feels faster and slicker, oh and the youtube app on desire is pants, sound sometimes isnt in sync and the quality isnt as good as iphone (even after adjusting it to high)

The word is 'IRONY'

There you go again, mistaking your opinion for what "everybody" else was thinking. Astound me with some proof that most people were thinking the iPad would ship with those specs.

My post was a reply to one that stated that the iPad was cheaper than "anybody" expected. My point has the same merit as the one I was referring to.

In fact, the reason why I highlighted the word 'everybody' is that assuming that all of us had the same expectations is stupid.

In a way, I was being ironic, why didn't you see it?
