I agree.
If your area doesnt have acess to their 4G service then why pay the additional $10?

What's the difference. I pay 10 bucks extra with AT&T for 3G service I don't have in my area.

It's 2010 ya think they'd be able to track that nonsense, oh wait these scum bags don't care.

That does suck man. I guess in your situation there is not much of a difference. Still as it's been said, 4G is in 11 states and most of those are not even online yet. I guess Sprint just blew it like they did the Pre.

I wonder how long before Sprint is bought out by Verizon? :D

But if you read my posts it's clear I am not complaining about how much I have to pay but why I have to pay for "enhanced" data just for the EVO. With ATT I pay more than Sprint is asking but I know what I am paying for. I pay 30 bucks for data X 2. I pay 30 bucks for unlimited text messaging. I pay 59.99 for 550 minutes for two lines. With Sprint you pay 129.99 for everything data which includes unlimited data for all of their smartphones. They now want 10 bucks extra exclusively for the EVO because of it's 4G ability in 4G areas. It's retarded and many many people agree with me.

Check this out: http://jbtaylor.posterous.com/more-detail-on-the-sprint-evo-4g-10month-prem

It is stupid however, what happens to those that travel and end up in a 4G area? What then? It's Sprint. They are going to milk it. The reasoning is asinine but what did you honestly expect?

AT&T = $149.99 a month
Sprint = $139.99 a month

You save $10 dollars and what do you gain? Certainly not 4G. So you're back to 3G. Sprint is as bad as T-Mobile. Verizon and AT&T are top dogs right now. Yeah you can roam but if you roam too much, you're going to get cut off or billed for it.

Eh. Whatever. A phone is a phone is a phone. I am certainly not switching carriers and paying ETF's for a phone. Especially on sprint.

Have fun though.

I hear you, that sucks too.
But compare AT&T's 3G coverage and Sprints 4G is not even close.

Ironic thing. 4G/WiMax coverage in my area in June. AT&T said 3G maybe by December (said it two years running now). Now that's a joke hehe.

- 1 GHz Snapdragon processor
- Android 2.1, currently the "best" version of Android
- HDMI out - can connect to a TV to watch video
- 4G speed
- The phone itself is a mobile hotspot
- 4.3 inch screen
- 8 megapixel camera and a front-facing camera

You forgot HTC Sense UI, a kickstand, and Flash lite (and sooner the ability for 10.1).

Very good points fellas. Very good. ATT and Sprint are about the same in our area. I don't travel much.

Did not know that ATT charged for video calls. Do you have a link on that? I would like to read up on it. I wonder if that will come into play with the next iPhone. I am doubting att letting vid calls over 3G....well without a fee.

It has a better camera (with a much larger and quality lens and much larger CMOS sensor which is what really matters with picture quality, NOT megapixels). It has a faster CPU and GFX CPU than the anything that has been announced so far including the EVO 4... What about this is disappointing?

who said anything about the camera?

so you're saying the a4 is faster than the snapdragon? links please?

uhh.. according to the tear downs of the leaked iPhones... its has 256MB ram... sounds about right too since thats what they put in the iPad... the EVO has 512 which should make multitasking that much smoother... EVO also has HDMI out, a larger screen, the ability to serve as a 4G wifi hotspot for 8 devices, and 3G and 4G video conferencing... so you are wrong... it has more than just 4G over the iPhone...

The A4 chip may be better than snapdragon, im not sure really, and its still not stated if it will be clocked at 1Ghz although I imagine it will... what im really interested in is the quite obviously larger battery in this gen iPhone... thats going to be apples big selling point I would bet.

what he said

the 256 of ram in the new iphone is the most disappointing news next to the smaller instead of larger screen

my iphone bill with att is only $72 a month so changing would def be more expensive

From what I have read, the EVO is going to tax Sprint's 3G/4G network pretty well as it is a data hog like the iPhone. This is the reason for the $10 increase. Not just for 4G but also the heavy use on the 3G network.

For me I think that it will come down to money. I expect both the new iPhone and the EVO to be great phones. But I am currently enjoying the ability to tether my iPad to my jailbroken iPhone 3GS (MyWi) and to do this on the EVO will definitely cost more.

Current bill with AT&T: 450 mins $40 + $5 200 txt mags + $30 data = $75/mo
Comp Sprint/EVO: 450 mins Everything Data $70 + $10 4G + $30 tetherIng = $110/mo

Ouch! $35 is a lot to have more or less the same functionality albeit at 4G speeds (and yes I am in the Dallas area where we do have 4G). I will probably wait untill they jail brake the new iPhone and get that.

So you're comparing NOT paying the required $30 tethering fee on ATT, to YES paying the fee on Sprint? How does that make sense?

Huh? What required ATT $30 tethering fee are you talking about? If you are aware of such a service offered by ATT please enlighten me. All I am saying is that I have this ability now and that to keep it on an EVO will cost me another $35. I am not really criticizing either ATT or Sprint, just doing some math.

I am sure there will be work arounds for the tethering in the Android community once Froyo is released due to the built-in tethering functionality and the ability to root the phone.

Snapdragon/A4 Benchmarks: http://www.anandtech.com/show/3633/apples-a4-soc-faster-than-snapdragon

Also the A4 is a custom made SOC which includes the powerVR GPU which by very definition is faster than the non-SOC graphics solution the snapdragon is using. I'm not hating on it... I'm just pointing out technical facts since most hardware geeks seem to look at the hardware aspects while ignoring the software engineering side of making devices like this work. Also speaking of which the 512 RAM is nice, but as someone already pointed out the Android market has no build quality standards for it's applications. Meaning that anyone can write code that is or is not optimized for your device or the amount of RAM in your device. Not sure if you know this or not but non optimized code running with 512 Megs of RAM will most certainly run slower than optimized code running with 256 Megs of RAM. The kind of optimization I'm talking about would have to be optimized not just to take advantage of the RAM but also of the specific hardware. So unless Android decides to put up an EVO only section in the market (which they very well could) for apps/widgets made to take advantage of the specific hardware in the EVO, you're not going to see the boost that you might think from the extra RAM. Obviously these disadvantages aren't something that will be advertised but I'm a realist and I've been in this game (technology and IT) for over 12 years now so I've learned to read between the number lines, marketing, and over specced (hardware wise) devices to compensate for the software shortcomings when marketing a product. That being said, being an owner of a Hero and previously a Nexus ONE (now replaced with my incredible), it would be nice is Google made sections in the market for different phones especially if those phones have hardware that is light years apart like say a Hero and an Incredible so people can write and distribute apps that actually take advantage of that hardware... Numbers and fanboyism are all fine and good until it gets in the way of realism boys and girls.

Yes sir, I understand you're just doing the math. But you're following the rules on one carrier and not the other:

ATT also charges an extra $30 for tethering on a smartphone plan. See the "Personal PDA plus Tethering" plan here. You're simply not paying it.

Likewise, I'm sure a lot of people enable tethering on their Sprint and Verizon phones (of all kinds) and don't pay.

The only US carrier-sanctified free tethering I know about right now is with the Verizon Pre and Pixi. Please correct me everyone, if there are others.

I tether with my iPhone all the time. Jailbroken of course :D
Speeds are great too. I took a bus trip to NY a few months ago and me and 2 other friends were using my iPhone as a wireless hotspot for our laptops. Worked like a charm. Best .99 cent app I ever bought :)

Evo replacing my iPhone JUNE 4th !!!

Just saw that sprint announced June 4th as the release date for the evo.

I love my iPhone but here is why I am switching:

1. Price: My new Sprint family plan unlimited text and data will be over $100 cheaper per month
2. Price: Evo is only $199 with a contract, cheaper than the best iPhone.
3. Price: With five phones in my house all capable of running 8 wifi connections. I will lose my home internet and home voip phone. Saving $100 more a month.
5. Price: My tethered iPad saves me $$ instead of paying the 3G monthly cost.
6. Price: Reality is people, we vote with our wallets, I am switching simply to cast my vote that AT&T pricing is unacceptable.

7. Speed: In most major areas Sprint Evo will be 4G by August, including Mine!!

Yes i am sacrificing ease of use and features. But seriously, I am going to buy a Harley with the money I will save by switching. Bye Bye ATT.

I just went to a T-Mobile store to play with an HTC HD2 (pretty much identical to the EVO but with WIN-MO on it). All I can say is:

That is ONE BIG HONKER OF A PHONE!

Perfect for watching HD videos using Flash and 4G. :)

Yep me too. EVO blows the 3G and 3GS out of the water no contest. And from what I have seen of the "leaked" iPhone (HD/4) the evo still wins hands down.

Of course the draw back is if you don't live in a city with good Sprint 4G coverage, but i am lucky enough to not have that issue. Same as OP I am thinking of dropping my VoIP and home internet with 2 Evos in the house we will be set for bandwidth and voice etc. Sorry apple I tried it your way, even doing app development but you have screwed me over to many times with rejections and "private API" crap.

I read other forums and they are licking their chops to do this on the EVO
