I've read multiple comparisons of the Nexus One and Incredible and pretty much all of them confirmed the N1 was faster. So it isn't much of a stretch to think the same applies to the Evo, especially considering they are the same processor.

It's also not that much of a stretch for someone to piece it together themselves. One of them is running Froyo, and has absolutely nothing on top of the stock OS. One is still running 2.1 and has a whole interface on top of the OS. Even if they were both running 2.1 the first one still applies.

True, but I still think it's best to try both on your hands. Some reviewers are very picky and they notice tiniest difference and make a big case out of it.

By the way, both Incredible and EVO have a bit more RAM than N1. So it counteracts with the added Sense UI layer.

Apparently some people don't think.

Apprenty there something called sense

Why didn't you root the nexus and install a desire rom on the thing to try out HTC Sense UI?

I take it you will be able to return the evo within 30 days? That will be good for you at least. Plenty off time to get the next iPhone. :)

I just got my EVO and it is REALLY good. I will miss having iTunes on my phone but this thing is amazing to say the very least. It makes my old 3G look horribly outdated, both in looks and performance.

Disappointed in the Evo

So I read a few really great reviews for the Sprint EVO and I went to the sprint store with my girlfriend. I was very excited to get my hands on the phone everyone's been talking about. When I was explaining how good this phone was to my girlfriend, I explain many people are saying "it's better than the iphone".

Having us now both heard this, we were both really excited to see the capabilities of EVO.

We finally got to the store and took a look at it, and I really wasn't that impressed with it. One of the things that really impressed me with the iPhone was how fast and responsive the touch screen was and the EVO seemed laggy like alot of the other android phones. The home screen was nice, and spec wise it was a nice phone, especially the camera.
It left something to be desired, it didn't feel as snappy, smooth, or as simple as the iphone. It had everything else the iPhone had but I feel that what the iPhone has is more polished and quicker and therefore more efficient in my eyes.

My two cents. Maybe I didn't see the device as intended, but if anyone still wants to convince me this truly is better than the 3GS, please link an uber EVO video that makes me want to run out and buy it.

I had the same experience as you, only it was with Verizon's HTC Incredible. It felt like a toy, compared to my iPhone 3GS.

Given the awesome specs of both devices that sounds disappointing .. I would think they'd be really snappy if anything. Beyond that, I guess it's further proof that my 3G that basically is 1/2-1/3 the performance of both phones, shows us that optimized software and the whole end user experience trumps raw specs.

It's a different flavor, of course it won't be an exact thing as an iPhone.

The EVO is for tech happy nerds that love tinkering with the software.

The iPhone is for tech happy people that wants a phone that just works and they don't have to "flash" it every 5 mins (see Windows mobile)

I'm getting my dad an EVO soon and I have a feeling that my iPhone 3GS is going to be jealous of that thing :(

It's never been about the specs. It's always the software.

I have the Nexus and see no lagginess that you describe. When I went to the verizon store and checked out the incredible, I did notice that issue. Since they both (incredible/nexus) use the same processor and display. I'm guessing its HTC's SenseUI that sits on top of android.

My Nexus is running the basic OS without any extra layers, and the performance of the phone exceeds that of my 3Gs in many ways and is the same in others (mostly UI stuff).

Key word being "further evidence".

Disagree ... there is a HUGE JB/SSH community. Not saying the same isn't true about Android, but don't dumb down iPhone OS. It's true iPhone OS isn't as easily open, but there are plenty of nerds that mod it away.

I have the complete opposite experience. Put an iPhone and an N1 next to each other and click on an icon or a link. The iPhone is more accurate, gives you better visual feedback, and has less jerkiness when opening something. The N1 is powerful spec wise, but for me it just doesn't translate into smooth scrolling and good visual feedback from the UI. I also hate how it highlights stuff when you're initiating a scrolling motion. Bugs the hell out of me. I do hope get froyo before I sell it and get the new iPhone; I'd like to feel the speed improvements.

The OP does not seem like a HUGE JB/SSH user lol

that's a general statement I made

I can't give a thorough evaluation, and by no means tell someone NOT to consider an Android device. But the short time I messed with the Incredible, the less impressed I was. I also felt it laggy, and jerky. Response wasn't horrible, but not stellar either...

I guess it's cool to have something to tinker with, or mod...but I guess I don't care about that as much as a solid phone, that does what I want it to when I need it...

Thats too bad your disappointed. I was kind of looking forward to another decent phone on the market with all the hype its been getting.

Yes, I also agree with how laggy the phones with the android OS are. It just doesn't feel as robust as the iPhone. When I use the Android phones, I actually see how much better the interface of an iPhone is than one of the other phones.

That's just my opinion.

I had a Nexus One for a couple of weeks but had some signal issues so I sold it. Otherwise it was a very snappy and fast phone.

I went today and played with an EVO. I thought it was nice and quick but one thing I have noticed with the iPhone versus many other touch screen devices was the accuracy. I had some accuracy issues with the handset I was playing with and it actually crashed twice. I credit the crashing to being fondled by lots of different people. It definitely felt like a nicer phone than the Incredible. I'm still convinced that Apple has better build quality than most HTC products save the Legend and the Nexus One. My N1 felt very solid and stable. The Incredible that I toyed with had a squeaky plastic back.

I liked the EVO, I liked the big screen too, but when the sales guy let me put his EVO in my pocket, it just felt a little too big. I would have liked a bigger screen on the new iPhone but I'll take the tradeoff in build quality. The customization of Android is great, but I still prefer the smooth interface offered by the iPhone OS.

So I picked up my evo this morning from radio shack and so far I have been quite pleased. The entire UI has been very responsive throughout, even with multiple applications running. Now admitidley I've only been using it for a few hours so far, but here are the things I don't care for so far:

1: the default keyboards space bar can be a little hard to hit when in landscape mpde, making typing with your thumbs a little difficult.

2: The auto back light is a little to sensitive. When holding the phone under direct light simply rocking the phone back and forth it will noticeably change.

3: 4G coverage on my area is very good but if you submit a request while on the move, sometimes the request won't be answered. Basically it will sometimes take two taps on a link beforeit goes through.

Those are my major complains so far. I am sure it will grow, but for right now the benefits are huge. The screen is just fantastic.

Well, I too just got back from playing around with the EVO, and I have to admit I was also dissapointed. The laggy-ness also got me, and my wife even pointed out (someone who could usually care less about that sort of thing). One snag on that kickstand, and you can kiss it goodbye.

The OP said he like the camera, whereas for a 8MP camera, I thought it sucked. The quailty was only slightly better than the 3GS... i dunno, maybe it takes better outdoor/night shots. I really wanted to test out the 4G mobile hotspot, but they said that it wasn't setup for it yet. I was told that the phones hotspot service wasn't active, but would be in a few days. I have my doubt on that that, but i will go back and try it out again soon.

Overall, the best thing I could say is that it had a nice big screen. Made me a little envious right when I saw it, but after spending 15 min with it, I soon got over it and was ready to move on.

I bought an Evo and these are my thoughts:

Speed: EVO
The phone is fast with no lagginess that I noticed. The 3GS feels much slower but I expect the new iPhone to compete with the Evo.

OS: personal preference
Personally I feel like the iPhone interface is basic and the android really allows for great customization. Again I cant say one is better than the other, but I think Android looks much nicer. I also love the expose HTC Sense feature

Build Quality: EVO
Much better than the 3GS. The plastic back on the 3GS feels cheap and has cracked repeatedly. Again the new iPhone will probably fix this

Apps: IPhone
More apps and the apps that I downloaded for both feel better on the iPhone

Integration: IPhone
iTunes makes a world of difference for bookmarks and music

Battery; Tie (both are awful)

Thats a quick summary for me. Personally I think Android 2.1 is better than O/S 3.0 but I love the iTunes integration. I dont think I can give that up so ill probably come back to the iPhone even though I feel like I am giving up many things on the O/S side.

The OP does not seem like a HUGE JB/SSH user lol

that's a general statement I made

I jailbreak my phone, mostly because I want to use Myfi and tlert. But other than that, 4.0 addressed the other reasons I jailbroke my iphone

I live in Daytona Beach, FL non-4G area.
