NO DATA/INTERNET WHILE ON VOICE CALL!

That is a deal killer for me. I use data all the time while on the phone.

Do people have a new iPhone I don't know about? I have the 32G 3GS, and just picked up the EVO this morning to try it out for 30 days and this thing is WAY faster than my iPhone. I mean you can clearly debate preferences in the UI and OS, but I don't see how anyone finds the current iPhone "snappier" - and for obvious reasons. But I don't notice any lag - waiting to see what the new version does and then I think we can better compare.

Can you post a video showing how many applications you are running and show this "lag?" Then kill all the apps and show the "lag?" Take into account, the iphone runs like a dream... with ONE app open at a time... I just got back from Best Buy and messed with one and personally thought it was pretty unbelievable... I was TRYING to get it to lag and couldn't...

It's not really a lag exactly, it's just that it reads the touch sensor a little slow. Check you tube for evo multi touch video and you will see what I mean. Every video shows it too. When you swipe your finger the page moves a noticeable difference behind your finger. The iphone does not do this. There's one app you can install that shows dots that are being registered and it's a tad bit behind your fingers at all times. Don't get me wrong, it's an incredible phone and it's something you'd get used to in about an hour. I was just using it some more and already got used to it. I can't speak for the apps on the phone cuz I'm not going to go installing stuff but browsing the web is fantastic. It still has the mutlitouch slowness because it has to do with the sensors or something but pages load a lot faster on his phone then mine and he's going off of 3g and I'm on wifi. Another thing is you don't want to buy this phone for 4g. I live in a 4g area and it barely ever has signal indoors. It's basically pointless but sprints 3g is fast enough here that it's fine anyways. It's a great phone but i don't think it's for me. Maybe if it was mine and I could customize it to my liking this might be different, but I can't.

Also, sorry but I don't have the time or will power to make videos. It wouldn't be any different then the videos on YouTube anyways. My suggestion is to go try one yourself. That's the only way you'll know if you'll like it or not.

Well, I played with the EVO twice today, and had two totally different experiences... I went to check out the EVO around lunch at a new (very low traffic) Sprint store, and was thoroughly impressed. I almost bought it right then, but I decided to take the wife to the mall this evening to see if she wanted one as well before jumping carriers. The phone at the mall was obviously well-abused by the end of the day. While the first phone worked flawlessly and without any lag, the second could take 1-2 seconds or more to enter even a single character into the browser's address bar. Scrolling was unbearable. Opening several apps led to crashes and a return to the app selector. Tis stands in contrast to the first phone's fluid text entry, application loads, video playback, and web browsing. One bar in the 4g meter left my iPhone with 5 bars looking quite dated, and I can imagine that the 4g network will only get better in the near future. I only wish they had used an AMOLED display instead of the TFT.

I would imagine that the true EVO experience on a personal phone would mirror that of the first phone. This is my hope. I will be waiting until the coming week to see what sort of technological wonder Apple can bring out onto their stage. I have high hopes, but from the looks of the iPhone OS 4.0 demos thus far, I have a feeling they are misplaced hopes. There is something significant to be said for having OS updates at a somewhat steady pace as opposed to having one major update each year. Likewise between this coming phone's announcement and next year's speculation, we will likely see 20-30 new Android phones with ever-increasing specs and improvements.

You know even Engadget said they were having lagging issues. I haven't played with one yet, but I'll check it out.

All joking aside, that was the most logical post i've seen on this topic in months. I really appreciate the response. I will definitely look up those videos. I don't have 4g in my area, but am stuck with sprint for another year and am really debating this phone...

eBay

To the OP, Your eBay listing looks good. How did you create the layout of the photos, any special tips or tricks?

Got my EVO today!

Since the new iPhone is due next week, I could not wait

Keep in mind I've been pro Apple since the 80's

There are a number of pros and cons with this phone that I knew going in

So far the pros are outweighing the cons

I hope to post a back to back overview of the new iPhone and EVO later this month.

Cheers

I'm glad I could help. It's hard finding honest opinions on either iPhone or android forums but I'd say i'm a pretty impartial party since I still haven't 100% decided which phone I'm going to go for. Again, the evo does not lag, it's just not as responsive as the iPhone. No phone has ever been as responsive as the iPhone and I don't see any phone ever being as responsive as the iPhone in the near future. The evo is definitely not a laggy phone though I just want to make sure everyone understands that. On android forums people will say it's "buttery smooth" and thats not true either though, especially if you have ever been an iPhone user.

Just got the phone, my only problem is that I can't type the pipeline character in. I heard this is an HTC problem and not necessarily an Android problem. BTW, the pipeline character "|" is the one above the backslash character on a regular keyboard.

I really need this character.

My nexus is able in fact I'm typing on it now |

Its under? 123 key then alt

I think the Evo is simply the nicest phone I have ever used. The build quality is excellent. I love the back and how it's removable and replacable in case it gets dinges up. That said I think the title of this thread should be I'm disappointed in Android that just happens to run on the Evo.

Dumb question time!

I know nothing about HTC phones. My Mom says she thinks they're sending her an EVO. She forwarded me the receipt, and it says:

HTC A9292 WIMAX BAR PHONE

Is this the same thing as an EVO? Believe it or not, a cursory Google search did not reveal the answer, and HTC A9292 returns no hits here at MR.

Why is this in the iPhone forum?

because, for some bizarre reason, the admins have decided to have android threads clutter up the iphone forum rather than creating a "competitor" subforum. No, it doesn't make any sense, but that's what's been decreed.

Take into account, the iphone runs like a dream... with ONE app open at a time...

Fortunately, because of the way they've implemented multitasking in OS 4, this will continue to be the case with multiple apps "open" at once.

That said I think the title of this thread should be I'm disappointed in Android that just happens to run on the Evo.

Unless you can get an Evo running something other than android, that's a distinction without a difference.

When you first get any smart phone OF COURSE the battery is going to suck, because you are constantly playing with it. Give it a few days to a week then say how it is.

I got an evo yesterday and can say I love it! I had an iPhone (traded it in for the evo) and to me personally it is better then my iPhone. The fact that i can customize to my liking is a huge plus. Also the camera? It's pretty great.

ETA: I don't care about the no data on the phone. I never used it on my iPhone. In fact the phone stayed on my ear while I was on the phone every single time I made a phone call.

Your post was deleted because it was ad hominem.

No it wasn't. All I said was ppl are making crap up about the competitors phone because they don't want their Iphone being over shined. Apple needs this kind of competition to make us better phones. Come back hours later mod deletes post and others pro EVO post.

It was something along those lines.

There are plenty of pro evo posts here. If your post was deleted it must mean it was against MR rules. There's no conspiracy here.

It's never been about the specs. It's always the software.

Nope.

It is always the user experience.

Apple creates a very very tight user experience that starts from when you unbox the iPhone, right to the point when you purchase your first app. The iPhone software lacks a lot. You can see that by comparing the software running on the iPhone in 2007 and now and in couple of weeks. But the iPhone compensate the lack of features with its user experience (both in hardware and software).

I returned my Evo. I loved the phone, but there are two really big problems:

1. no itunes program. I had to download a program to sync my music (which sucked) then I had to download a program to download my bookmarks. Pretty much a hassle. I have a gmail account so my contacts were fine, but if you dont have gmail add another step.

2. doesnt work with my car navigation system. My iphone charges and works on the nav screen which is something I didnt think id miss

Now, there are some positives of android.
1. notification system is great
2. homescreen info and widgets were really nice
3. HTC sense is amazing. Apple please add expose to the iPhone
4. customization is everywhere

Overall for me I missed iTunes too much. Just couldnt deal with the hassle of not having it. I dont really love the new iPhone, but I guess im stuck with it until Android can build a program similar to iTunes.
