[Merged] HTC Evo 4G / Supersonic / Sprint Evo

It's far too large. Feels like my Garmin. Needs Froyo update to compete. Who actually has 4G and is willing to sacrifice the battery life?

Does FROYO make it shrink in physical size?

That would be a massive programming breakthrough, and I would think they would be promoting the crap out of that!

Froyo on the Evo currently doesn't support the hardware/features that make the Evo interesting in the first place.

Neither camera, no 4G and so on.

I am keeping my Evo (and upgrading to the new iPhone from my 3GS); the hardware is great, but most of the stock apps are half-assed in Android 2.1.

On an iPhone I find the apps I use add features NOT present in the OS and that don't constitute basic "SmartPhone" functionality. On Android all the apps I have so far are to fix basic missing core functionality in the stock apps/OS.

For example, the Evo has TWO mail clients as standard, and neither is worthwhile unless you ONLY use Google mail. How about having ONE that works properly (K-9 comes close, but it's still outclassed by the standard iPhone mail client from 2 years ago)?

Do those of you with the evo that switched from the iPhone. I know the keyboards are definitely not alike especially auto-correct. I had a Nexus one. I couldn't get used go the keyboard at all. Another reason I had to keep the iPhone. I know the n1 didn't have sensed UI but is it much different than iPhones keyboard?

I've had the phone for 2 days now....i've charged it 4 times already.

Pandora keeps freezing on me. And there is speculation that advanced task killer is causing some issues with going into idle which is killing cycles.

I can't believe now bad pandora is. I dont' know if its the widget but it always gets in this mode where the menus and everything works but the music isn't working. and the widget is pointless at that point.

Also,

I heard that there might be a software issue with charging the battery. The android OS maybe cutting short on the battery thinking its charged. And the first time i charged it from 0 to full (it did it in one hour). WHen i turned my phone off...2.5 hours.

just saying.

Could you go to Settings > About phone > Battery use to check what is causing the battery to drain so fast and let us know?

It's the best way to find out what is wring.

read what I posted. I said android has more features and functionality. if u like the phone with less features and functionality better.... well thats up to u lol.

sure if u wanna go thru the hassle of jb... but with android that functionality exists right out of the box. isn't that supposed to b the apple mantra? "it just works" lol

If u use google voice already u will know how useful it is. gv integrated into the os allows u to make all outgoing calls with ur gv number (so ur real number is obscured) automatically and use gv as the txt app as well as for voicemail

Also, if u really dont see the usefulness of a powerful (voice) search that searches your phone, the web and maps in a unified interface... dunno what to say lol.

You really need to grasp the concept of opinions and individual needs.
stop acting like everyone should like or use something. it entirely depends on the person...

Go through the hassle of Jbing? you download a program and press a button, if you think thats a hassle then "i dont know what to say"

This is a problem with the HTC IME keyboard. If you really need that character i would suggest a different keyboard like 'better keyboard'. Unfortunately the HTC keyboard is probably the best tap keyboard you will try. IMO it is much better than the stock one. If you can do without a tap keyboard, I would suggest swype. You should be able to find a version with a quick google search as its not in the market. I just checked and it definitely has this character.

EDIT:Just found some colorful swype keyboards real quick

O and for the people that dont like the sense launcher, LauncherPro is awesome.

Thank you for this tip! You are a lifesaver.

Now onto further evaluating android and the HTC Evo

Okay EVO Update:

Pandora on Android SUCKS!! Crashed on me 2 times. Unreal, i had to force quit and it still gets hung up. Also I heard that using task killer is Bad for the androids and not recommended by good developers.

Also....for people who complain that the iphone has no ram

512mb on android, just started up my evo phone = 187mb of available memory.

iphone with 256mb.....142mb.

The Android 2.1 kernel can not address the full 512MB from what I know. My Nexus One used to have around 170MB free on 2.1 but with FroYo it has over 250MB free thanks to the new kernel.

2.6.32 kernel upgrade
HIGHMEM support for RAM >256MB
SDIO scheduling and BT improvements

Lets hope HTC don't sit idle with a FroYo update for the Evo like they have the GSM HTC Hero.:(

$10 a month would keep you from buying arguably the best phone on the market right now? Skip McDonalds twice in a month and you have your $10

Why pay $10/month for a feature you can't use? I'm in the same boat, sort of. Depending on what's shown Monday, it looks like a EVO vs. iPhone battle for my wallet.

Does anyone know what the "drawing" gesture is all about?

Also I hope 2.2 is coming this month so we can get full support for the 512 RAM.

I swear if 2.2 doesn't fix this it'll be a huge fail on Android's part.

It doesn't mean what you think.

It's not a realtime usage status. It's showing what happened over time... not what's happening at that moment. For example:

If I unplug from external power, then bring up the main menu, then immediately check the battery usage... well, surprise... 100% of the battery used since I unplugged was for Android.

A few seconds later the reading gets a bit more accurate (IMO) by saying:
  • 86% had been used for Android and
  • 14% for the display.

If I call up Maps, get My Location, and scroll around the map, then the battery usage becomes:
  • 64% Maps
  • 24% System
  • 7% Display
  • 5% Cell standby

It's simply showing you historically where the battery power was used since you plugged or unplugged.

I swear if 2.2 doesn't fix this it'll be a huge fail on Android's part.

I'm not sure that's an android OS issue. My battery info shows that the Android System taking only 5%, its the display that typically takes the majority of juice (30%)

I'm actually hating the HTC sense UI, I wish we had the option to use just the plain android operating system. I think it looks better anyways, simple and clean.

So I'm guessing there is no way to get my pipeline character unless I somehow root it and get froyo.

There are things I like in the SenseUI but mostly I agree with you and I also think it drags the system down a bit

With the new iPhone data plans tomorrow, it looks like iPhone may actually end up cheaper now. Crazy.

Comes down to reception and hardware now.

As i'm typing this my phone is at

Android System - 25%
Cell Standby - 23%
Wi-Fi - 23%
Phone idle - 18%
Display 8%
Dolphin Browser HD - 3%

I'm guessing it's going to differ by user but to me Android system is always at the top taking more than a quarter of the power :(

And I close every process that I don't use.

it means your playing with your phone a lot. I have 2% Display and 7% Android system and it's been unplugged from charger for 7hrs.

yeah i've heard the battery life is abysmal on this thing.

just when i thought the iphone had bad battery life..

I picked up an EVO because i sold my iPhone 3GS to get some cash to put towards the new iPhone and i didn't have a backup phone to use till it launches.

My impressions of the EVO is that is pretty cool, I like the video chat feature and the way it syncs up with all the google services.

I don't like the way the apps are display as well as the way the browser displays things its got like a very plain jane feel to it Vs the iPhone where everything was pretty polished and looked presentable.

One thing is for sure: The safari web browser is LIGHT YEARS better than any browser on Android.

I don't like how the test wraps when zoom. Opera only has 1 zoom. I just love safari it does a better job at everything. It's smoother on the scrolling, zooming and the touch screen is more accurate, I actually don't like web browsing at all on my EVO.

Battery update: I went to sleep at 3:30am at 43% charge. I woke up at 10:30am with 8% charge. No mail or gmail or gchat or text was recieved. (but their notifications were activated).

wow!!!!! my iphone, dropped 3%................3!!!!

$10 fee/month is NOT for 4G, but for the unlimited data. Without the $10 data fee, your 3G would be capped at 5GB per month.

ATT is not moving to 4G. They will be bridging to LTE.

Check sprints site. This is not correct. Unlimited everything is $99. The $10 premium fee is for 4g.
