You could also make the argument that Apple only releasing a new phone every year is helping them. I know that technology is always changing and if you wait you'll always be waiting. But at least with the iPhone if you buy it in June, you'll get a year out of the item without feeling like you got gypped. Customers are going to be wary of buying an Android device if they feel that a much better version is right around the corner.
I just think it goes to show how far ahead of the game Apple truly is if competitors coming out now are besting the 10 month-old 3GS.
You have a very good point. However, the technology is advancing so fast in 2010 that the annual iPhone OS/hardware update may be too slow to keep up with Android. In June 2009, iPhone 3GS was better than any Android on the market. There weren't too many Android around and the best (Hero) was good but not great.
Now fast forward to June 2010. There are so many capable and competent Android devices on the market that are at least on par with iPhone 4.0 (yes, we haven't seen the exact specs). iPhone 4G has a front facing camera, new design, and somewhat improved OS. But it is essentially the same OS as 2007. And guess what, iPhone 5.0 won't be out until summer of 2011 and at this rate, Android will be the market leader next year.
Just a food for thought, Android has released 4 major updates in one year (1.5, 1.6, 2.0, 2.1). 2.2 Froyo is coming out early summer. iPhone has one major update each year. Even an apple fanboy would wish Apple would update more frequently.
Sorry to burst your bubble. The most significant OS 4.0 update is the faux multi-tasking. Android has true multi-tasking since day 1. Oh, and iPhone just got the capability to set your own wallpaper. How awesome is that?![]()

Evo this or incredible that.
Whatever you want to call them they wont even come close to a fraction of the new iphone sales...
I wasn't even aware that sales was being discussed oh this thread? talk about scraping the bottom of the barrel to make a point?![]()
Multi-tasking really isn't that important. Never was. It was only another bitchfest for haters and non-iPhone users in attempt to make themselves feel better for their choice of phone. I have had customizable wallpapers and multitasking for about three years now as I am jailbroken. Your argument holds no water with me.
Why do you have to jailbreak your iPhone to if the stock iPhone is so polished?
And if multi-tasking is not important, why did it take center stage during the keynote last month?
Despite your contradicting statement, I agree with you wholeheartedly that iPhone is easier to use. Some might call it dumb-down or the lack of customization / choice. And you proved my point iPhone OS is limited in many ways that yourself stay JB for over three years. Android is still raw compared to iPhone OS, but its rapid rate of evolution has closed most of the gaps (iPhone 3GS is miles ahead of Hero, the same can't be said iPhone 4G over Evo/Incredible/Desire/Nexus One). Like I said, at this rate, in 2011, iPhone OS will play catch up if Apple keeps the one year refresh cycle.
So I'm taking a look at my Google Nexus One sitting right next to me, and I can't for the life of me figure out what its full multi-tasking can do over the iPhone's "limited multi-tasking".
Nope. Its just some of these fanboys are absolutely PATHETIC. One of those dumb idiots try to defend the 256MB ram in the iPad, saying it is amazingly fast, and it doesn't need more. Well, Steve Jobs said web browsing on iPad is way better than a LAPTOP. Sure enough I can have 16 tabs open on an iPad (at least the demo unit) but when you switch between tabs, the damn page must reload because... the lack of enough RAM. Then they get all defensive and say "well it doesn't take long to reload the page" Well my internet isn't the fastest, and to load MacRumors forum, it takes 25 seconds of my life just to lead it to become readable. this issue will be resolved according to a fanboy. sadly it exist in the iPhone... and has ever since its debut in 2007. So I think its unlikely it will be fixed.
They also say that for $1199 MacBook Pro having a wimpy 2.4GHZ Core 2 duo is enough. BS. For that price I want an i5 in my laptop. Or a 2.8GHz core 2 duo. The fanboys also say that i'm too picky with my iPhone. My glass isn't sitting flush with the bezel. I PAID $599 for a ****** iPhone, and the manufacture who HYPES their **** cannot even BUILD it CORRECTLY. It these fanboys who defend Apple's STUPID decisions that are retarded.
Oh, and Gizmodo. They didn't do the right thing by purchasing misplaced property, but it was Apple's fault because THEY trusted a DRUNK 27 year old with a prototype iPhone. But those fanboys says its all gizmodo's fault and it was a tiny mistake made by Apple. Losing a prototype iPhone costing a company money isn't a tiny mistake.
I've see a lot of posts commenting about comparing a year old phone [designed] vs. a brand new phone and how its unfair.
I disagree, while the design of the iPhone is indeed a year old, apple is still selling it as their premier phone. Its too bad that apple decides to wait a year before updating the phone. If apple wants to sit on their laurels pushing the 3Gs while their competition is working feverishly to leap frog them, that' not cnet's fault. Apple is the 800 pound gorilla in this market and its only fair to be compared to them.
To be honest, if apple plays it say with the 4G phone, I may opt for the incredible.

A JB iphone will always let you do alot more than a stock one.
Multitasking is important to some. I had it for a long time also but dont use it that often. Certainly a good native feature to have with 4.0 and without draining resources or battery is a plus IMO.
The iphone will not be playing catch up to android any time soon and definetelly not within a year. We can make a bet if you want![]()
Just cause there is a new android cellphone released every month or 2 it doesnt mean people upgrade their cellphones that often. Most are under contract and have to wait 12 to 18 months to upgrade or pay over $400-500 to get a new cellphone each time a newer model is out.
If you're waiting until Apple shows it's cards anyway, why the Incredible and not the EVO 4G?

They compare it to the iPhone because its hyped so much. All the customers say how amazing it is. Apple does a lot of advertizing. So its over-hyped, so you have to compare it (iPhone ) (the best phone in the world- Steve Jobs) to every other competitor.
Multi-tasking took center stage to shut up the haters and complainers. Plain and simple. Just like cut and paste which Apple has executed better than anyone else.
While the iPhone OS is great in its current state, we all know that Apple likes to keep things locked down. Therefore, you have a lack of standard features that some, including myself, think it should have that it doesn't. There is a difference between being a polished OS and a fully-spec'd one. I jailbroke to tether to my MBP when I am on the road for business. I also wanted GVMobile, qTweeter, and some other aps that Apple does not offer.
The EVO is not out yet and the 3GS has already won numerous comparisons against the N1. I am thinking Cnet gave the Incredible the win just because they were tired of the iPhone winning all the time. Let's see how that plays out again once the next iPhone comes out in June Honestly, I have played around with it and I still think the Droid is the better phone between the two.
I think that Android is good competition for Apple because it will force them to stay on top of their game. If Apple opened up the platform and users could do what they could by being jailbroken then there would be no comparison and Android would disappear from the market quite rapidly.
The iPhone is like BMW's 3-series. It's the benchmark for the market and where the competition wants to be. There are many imitators and some come close to matching the experience in terms of specs. But all leverage is quickly lost once the new 3-series is released. Same with the iPhone. Older versions like the 3GS can be on the market longer because it takes competitors a year or more to catch up.

The thing is, as soon as the new iPhone and the Evo come out, the Evo will aleady have it beat. At no point will it be the best phone and it this will be a bad omen for Apple. It's like the iPhone being lapped. It may be different (run iPhone OS and all), but it won't be hands-down the best (like it has for so many years).
