You could also make the argument that Apple only releasing a new phone every year is helping them. I know that technology is always changing and if you wait you'll always be waiting. But at least with the iPhone if you buy it in June, you'll get a year out of the item without feeling like you got gypped. Customers are going to be wary of buying an Android device if they feel that a much better version is right around the corner.

You have a very good point. However, the technology is advancing so fast in 2010 that the annual iPhone OS/hardware update may be too slow to keep up with Android. In June 2009, iPhone 3GS was better than any Android on the market. There weren't too many Android around and the best (Hero) was good but not great.

Now fast forward to June 2010. There are so many capable and competent Android devices on the market that are at least on par with iPhone 4.0 (yes, we haven't seen the exact specs). iPhone 4G has a front facing camera, new design, and somewhat improved OS. But it is essentially the same OS as 2007. And guess what, iPhone 5.0 won't be out until summer of 2011 and at this rate, Android will be the market leader next year.

Just a food for thought, Android has released 4 major updates in one year (1.5, 1.6, 2.0, 2.1). 2.2 Froyo is coming out early summer. iPhone has one major update each year. Even an apple fanboy would wish Apple would update more frequently.

I just think it goes to show how far ahead of the game Apple truly is if competitors coming out now are besting the 10 month-old 3GS.

Sorry to burst your bubble. The most significant OS 4.0 update is the faux multi-tasking. Android has true multi-tasking since day 1. Oh, and iPhone just got the capability to set your own wallpaper. How awesome is that?

this is the best post of this thread, my hats off to you.

It is definitely too slow of a refresh cycle to keep pace with Android hardware specs, but is it too slow of a refresh cycle to keep people from buying the entire iPhone experience? I doubt it.

So I'm taking a look at my Google Nexus One sitting right next to me, and I can't for the life of me figure out what its full multi-tasking can do over the iPhone's "limited multi-tasking".

You are so right about every point you make  Let's just rename the forum, "Fanboys for Android". Android released four major updates in a year because the OS was raw and extremely unpolished. Android should have been at 1.5 what it is now at 2.1 and that's even if your phone will receive that update. It still is raw and incomplete in areas (no video compression/can't see hidden SSID's/inconsistent feedback on touchscreen/OS fragmentation on too many devices). Android is still a not a total consumer-friendly experience where the iPhone is. Android is still the same OS it was when it was released so I don't know what point you are trying to make with iPhone OS 4.0.

You go ahead and keep assuming that Android will be the market leader in 2011. I believe there are 40+ million iPhone users at this point. Don't forget that you can't truly multi-task on a Verizon Android while on a call. Multi-tasking really isn't that important. Never was. It was only another bitchfest for haters and non-iPhone users in attempt to make themselves feel better for their choice of phone. I have had customizable wallpapers and multitasking for about three years now as I am jailbroken. Your argument holds no water with me.

I love the iPhone as much as anyone, but what is holding it back is the carrier. One phone will definitely not eat into the iPhone sales, but by 2011 a plethora of android devices on different networks will. As far as the best cell phone in 2010, it will be the Evo, but it will not be as user friendly as the iPhone, but darn close. How do I know this? I have played with his little brother the incredible.

I wasn't even aware that sales was being discussed oh this thread? talk about scraping the bottom of the barrel to make a point?

Sales is what measures a successful device no matter what that product might be.
If it sucks it wont sell good and people wont buy it. If its great you will sell over 40 million of them. If not then they'd have to give it away for $30 like the Pre or buy one get one free like some other "smartphones" out there.
Bottom line, wake up and smell the coffee.

Why do you have to jailbreak your iPhone to if the stock iPhone is so polished?

And if multi-tasking is not important, why did it take center stage during the keynote last month?

Despite your contradicting statement, I agree with you wholeheartedly that iPhone is easier to use. Some might call it dumb-down or the lack of customization / choice. And you proved my point iPhone OS is limited in many ways that yourself stay JB for over three years. Android is still raw compared to iPhone OS, but its rapid rate of evolution has closed most of the gaps (iPhone 3GS is miles ahead of Hero, the same can't be said iPhone 4G over Evo/Incredible/Desire/Nexus One). Like I said, at this rate, in 2011, iPhone OS will play catch up if Apple keeps the one year refresh cycle.

A JB iphone will always let you do alot more than a stock one.
Multitasking is important to some. I had it for a long time also but dont use it that often. Certainly a good native feature to have with 4.0 and without draining resources or battery is a plus IMO.
The iphone will not be playing catch up to android any time soon and definetelly not within a year. We can make a bet if you want :D
Just cause there is a new android cellphone released every month or 2 it doesnt mean people upgrade their cellphones that often. Most are under contract and have to wait 12 to 18 months to upgrade or pay over $400-500 to get a new cellphone each time a newer model is out.
With all the new features that the next iphone will have along with ichat and front facing camera and the simplicity and ease of use of the iphone OS you can take that to the bank.

So I'm taking a look at my Google Nexus One sitting right next to me, and I can't for the life of me figure out what its full multi-tasking can do over the iPhone's "limited multi-tasking".

You know what, during my first month with N1, I thought multi-tasking was good to have, but it's not THAT important. I was just happy I could run Slacker in the background while doing other things.

Then one day two weeks ago, it hit me that I was downloading offline map data cache on Mapdroyd, listening to Slacker, browsing the Market Place and went on a download rampage, AND I was composing an email and chatting on msn all at the same time. It was such a smooth experience and I didn't realize it until later I could never do it on my iPhone, not even when 4.0 comes out. I didn't appreciate how convenient and useful true multi-tasking was until that day.

What I like about Android multi-tasking, other than those mentioned above, is the ability to run widgets, check weather/news, and download podcasts automatically in the middle of the night. Hell, it's much easier to jump between apps in Android than iPhone. Afterall iPhone has ONE physical button where as standard Android has 4. Unless Apple significantly redesigns the next iPhone (5th gen), its single button will limit at how much it can do.

Nope. Its just some of these fanboys are absolutely PATHETIC. One of those dumb idiots try to defend the 256MB ram in the iPad, saying it is amazingly fast, and it doesn't need more. Well, Steve Jobs said web browsing on iPad is way better than a LAPTOP. Sure enough I can have 16 tabs open on an iPad (at least the demo unit) but when you switch between tabs, the damn page must reload because... the lack of enough RAM. Then they get all defensive and say "well it doesn't take long to reload the page" Well my internet isn't the fastest, and to load MacRumors forum, it takes 25 seconds of my life just to lead it to become readable. this issue will be resolved according to a fanboy. sadly it exist in the iPhone... and has ever since its debut in 2007. So I think its unlikely it will be fixed.

They also say that for $1199 MacBook Pro having a wimpy 2.4GHZ Core 2 duo is enough. BS. For that price I want an i5 in my laptop. Or a 2.8GHz core 2 duo. The fanboys also say that i'm too picky with my iPhone. My glass isn't sitting flush with the bezel. I PAID $599 for a ****** iPhone, and the manufacture who HYPES their **** cannot even BUILD it CORRECTLY. It these fanboys who defend Apple's STUPID decisions that are retarded.

Oh, and Gizmodo. They didn't do the right thing by purchasing misplaced property, but it was Apple's fault because THEY trusted a DRUNK 27 year old with a prototype iPhone. But those fanboys says its all gizmodo's fault and it was a tiny mistake made by Apple. Losing a prototype iPhone costing a company money isn't a tiny mistake.

Wow, the first step is to admit you have a problem. You clearly don't like Apple products or at least that is the impression you give. After reading through four pages, you just dropped the bomb with this post. I'm not sure sure we all needed to read through your opinion on the iPad, MacBook Pro's and the whole Gizmodo debacle. it would probably be well received on an anti-mac forum. Kinda makes you look like a fan boy yourself. Just sayin'.

I've see a lot of posts commenting about comparing a year old phone [designed] vs. a brand new phone and how its unfair.

I disagree, while the design of the iPhone is indeed a year old, apple is still selling it as their premier phone. Its too bad that apple decides to wait a year before updating the phone. If apple wants to sit on their laurels pushing the 3Gs while their competition is working feverishly to leap frog them, that' not cnet's fault. Apple is the 800 pound gorilla in this market and its only fair to be compared to them.

To be honest, if apple plays it say with the 4G phone, I may opt for the incredible.

Ooooooo. I like post.

"However, the technology is advancing so fast in 2010 that the annual iPhone OS/hardware update may be too slow to keep up with Android."

This has been on my mind for a while now. I can totally see it coming true.

A JB iphone will always let you do alot more than a stock one.

Jailbreaking should hesitantly be considered while discussing the pros/cons of an iPhone and Android device. Jailbreaking is a niche community and the average joe will never JB his phone.

Multitasking is important to some. I had it for a long time also but dont use it that often. Certainly a good native feature to have with 4.0 and without draining resources or battery is a plus IMO.

multitasking is a luxury that, once we have our hands on, will be like prying something from a dead mans hands to get rid of. Actually using a phone that can multitask really puts it into perspective.

The iphone will not be playing catch up to android any time soon and definetelly not within a year. We can make a bet if you want :D

I beg to differ. The iPhone being updated annually is going to have dry spots in feature availability during the year. We all sit and wait for June to come like its the mid-year Christmas for iPhone users. The Android OS is constantly being updated with new features (sort of playing catchup with iPhone OS and other competitors) but after all is said and done and both OS's are on level playing field...Android and it's lack of update constraint will blow past Apple, IMO.

And think about it....as stated above the iPhone has ONE button. Will this change? ehhhh, doubt it. Such a limiting factor when considering the possible revolutionary applications that might have been in the future.

Just cause there is a new android cellphone released every month or 2 it doesnt mean people upgrade their cellphones that often. Most are under contract and have to wait 12 to 18 months to upgrade or pay over $400-500 to get a new cellphone each time a newer model is out.

Err, you're looking at the small, simple-minded picture. Car companies sell cars daily....by the minute...second...I worked in a car dealership and you don't realize how many people really buy cars unless you see it with your own eyes. It gets to the point when you say....."WHERE THE **** ARE THESE PEOPLE COMING FROM?!??!" lol

Anyhoo, phones are sold quite often. Younger generation finally old enough to be responsible for a smart phone, someone losing their phone at a ball game, as you said about contracts being up....there are a million different instances where someone would take the dive into buying a new phone.

If you're waiting until Apple shows it's cards anyway, why the Incredible and not the EVO 4G?

They compare it to the iPhone because its hyped so much. All the customers say how amazing it is. Apple does a lot of advertizing. So its over-hyped, so you have to compare it (iPhone ) (the best phone in the world- Steve Jobs) to every other competitor.

Multi-tasking took center stage to shut up the haters and complainers. Plain and simple. Just like cut and paste which Apple has executed better than anyone else.

While the iPhone OS is great in its current state, we all know that Apple likes to keep things locked down. Therefore, you have a lack of standard features that some, including myself, think it should have that it doesn't. There is a difference between being a polished OS and a fully-spec'd one. I jailbroke to tether to my MBP when I am on the road for business. I also wanted GVMobile, qTweeter, and some other aps that Apple does not offer.

The EVO is not out yet and the 3GS has already won numerous comparisons against the N1. I am thinking Cnet gave the Incredible the win just because they were tired of the iPhone winning all the time. Let's see how that plays out again once the next iPhone comes out in June Honestly, I have played around with it and I still think the Droid is the better phone between the two.

I think that Android is good competition for Apple because it will force them to stay on top of their game. If Apple opened up the platform and users could do what they could by being jailbroken then there would be no comparison and Android would disappear from the market quite rapidly.

The iPhone is like BMW's 3-series. It's the benchmark for the market and where the competition wants to be. There are many imitators and some come close to matching the experience in terms of specs. But all leverage is quickly lost once the new 3-series is released. Same with the iPhone. Older versions like the 3GS can be on the market longer because it takes competitors a year or more to catch up.

Huh? What's hyped so much? The Incredible? I honestly have heard very little about it compared to the EVO.

Also, the post I quoted was referring to actually purchasing a phone, not spec comparisons.

I was just saying it doesn't make sense to wait for the iPhone HD to be announced and then get the Incredible when the EVO will be out. I don't see any downsides to the same device plus bigger screen, HDMI out, HD video and 4G...

Yay! Someone who likes the iPhone but isn't a jerk about it! Haha

Android is not BAD for iPhone consumers. It just makes Apple step up their game because it IS a competitor.

I feel like Android almost exists because Google didn't like the way Apple closed off their system. Google tends to like open information and doesn't like the closed source, closed ecosystem that iPhone OS has. I'm not even sure Google would have created Android if the iPhone was able to run unsigned code (or jailbroken when sold).

Had I upgraded my iPhone 3G I probably would have taken an iPhone 3Gs over a Nexus One. Now, if things pan out the way they appear to be, I'll be getting an EVO 4G over an iPhone HD. But we'll have to see.

"However, the technology is advancing so fast in 2010 that the annual iPhone OS/hardware update may be too slow to keep up with Android."

The thing is, as soon as the new iPhone and the Evo come out, the Evo will aleady have it beat. At no point will it be the best phone and it this will be a bad omen for Apple. It's like the iPhone being lapped. It may be different (run iPhone OS and all), but it won't be hands-down the best (like it has for so many years).

If you're waiting until Apple shows it's cards anyway, why the Incredible and not the EVO 4G?

I may but the odds of jumping on the spring network is slim to none. Yeah the EVO looks like a great phone, but sprint is an egg sucking dog, worse the ATT.

In what way will it have it beat? I'm not hating on your comment but I'd like you to explain your reasons. If your talking about betting specs then ok, but the iPhone only needs about half (guess) the processing power to run it's OS then Android does. So processing power and a lot of other features are relative to the OS. If you have a new Core i7 desktop and its loaded with tons of crap on it, it will probably still run slower then my Core 2 Duo.

If it has an 8mp camera instead of a 5mp? Cool. I guess with the iPhone I can't print out my pictures to be the size of a full wall, darn. The quality of the lens is what is important to me. I still have an old Nikon 2mp camera. Yeah, I can't do great photo editing with it but it still takes great normal size pictures that a cheap 10mp camera couldn't do.

I don't think there will ever be a clear cut winner. In terms of sales, the iPhone will most definitely run laps around the Evo. In terms of specs on paper, the Evo will run laps around the iPhone. As far as how the phone performs and how much people like it is on an individual basis. This thread and this argument could go on forever. It's like arguing why you prefer apples over oranges and I prefer oranges over apples.
