Merged iPhone 3G Dock Thread (the old dock, the new dock, why no free dock, etc)

I knew, but oddly at ATT this morning the employee ringing up my iPhone 3G thought the dock was included with the iPhone when I asked what the price was and if they had it.
That's the price you pay for 3G vs. 2.5G. That extra .5G costs a lot and sacrifices had to be made.
But seriously, how many people actually used the 1st gen's dock anyway? It is a joke to design a dock that can't be used when the iphone is in a protective case. Palm used to design the cases so they flipped out of the way when docked (Palm V, Palm 500 series). I left my iphone dock in the box since the day I bought it.

You're talking about Palm designing around their own cases. I don't believe Apple makes their own iPhone case, therefore, should they design their product around third party cases that didn't exist yet for the product they were designing?
I think you've got your chicken mixed up with your egg. If Apple sold a universal dock, the 3rd party case manufacturers would design around it.
Yes, the official 3G iphone dock. I want to buy a case that I dont have to remove it to put it in (whenever I buy a dock)
They do sell a universal dock, and there are a number of iPhone cases that do work with it (1st gen iPhone); Agent 18 for example. But the point you're making is the same one I was trying to make; the case manufacturers are perfectly welcome to design around the dock; the statement I was responding to seems to be that Apple didn't design the dock to work with cases that weren't created yet..
has anyone seen that on the apple store the bluetooth headset now no longer ships with the dual dock, pity cause i was gonna get the headset partly cause of the dock. wont be buying the dock on its own now. waste of money imo.
on a side note, does anyone know if you can buy iPod style usb cables seperatly, i mean the apple ones, cause the dock to usb cable is a really strange fit on the bottom of the iphone.

Anyone know if there is a new combo/dock with the bluetooth headset? I need another headset to go with the new phone, and I don't want to get one with the old dock...
I tried to buy one today but nowhere had them in stock - strangely the Carphone Warehouse said they dont stock them because the new 3g iPhone comes with one - showed me the label on the box that said dock connector and wouldnt believe me when i told them that was the cable. They had recieved demo models that came with docks but didnt understand that it was so the phone could be displayed in a cabinet easily.
They couldnt sell me the ones they had lying around - so I gave up and they dont get my money.
I will end up ordering one off the apple site next week I guess, would like to buy a dock speaker system for the bedside table with an radio alarm type thing built in but i hear they arent all compatible, some difference with the power connector :-(

Use mine daily as well. I wonder how long they'll keep selling them...may have to pick up another.
Is anyone else having trouble adding the dock to their cart on the apple store website? I wanna buy one but it won't let me! Every time it says my cart is empty.

I picked one up at my Apple store with my iPhone purchase. It was $29 bucks but I need a dock. I can't just have it laying down on my desk.
It's called Apple likes to screw over customers when the chance presents itself. I remember when the iPod came with all kinds of crap, now to get all the stuff the iPod comes with cost like $100 extra.
