I'm holding out for a white one. Not sure why but the white looks really awesome to me. Reminds me of my first iPod and how sleek it looked. I'm guessing there is some kind of major production delay.

The real question is will we even see a press release.

That's just it! I am holding out too, I just wanna know when!!!
I stayed up all night just to find out there were no white phones.
Couldn't they have at least let us know?
How inconsiderate!

Apple kiosk in my local Best Buy put me down on a pre-order for the white iPhone this afternoon on my lunch break. They said they received word they will not be getting them in with the first batch of phones but will get them in on the next batch a week or two afterward. I put down $50 and I have a receipt confirming my pre-order for the white one. Hopefully he is correct about the wait, I do not want to wait a month longer for them.

I don't know why, but I get this feeling that this is all because Apple wants a similar launch to the original iPhone with pictures of huge lines and people camping out. If people are waiting for white and they get a few in stores on launch day, the lines will be massive and everyone who wanted white will try to be first in line. With everyone ordering for home delivery, the lines might not be so long, but if a few million people feel the need to line up to get the phone they wanted, they will be. I just don't understand why else they wouldn't be available. They made perfectly good phones for WWDC, it passed FCC inspection... it just doesn't make any sense, other than a pisspoor marketing ploy.

What I would love, almost as much as a time frame for the white phone, is the ability to pre-order and have it shipped whenever it comes out. I realize that right now this is a BAD time to allow such order placement, as the folks who are anxiously trying to pre-order their black devices are already overloading the AT&T and Apple websites. Wishful thinking I suppose.

*EDIT* I realize I could do this if I went to my local Best Buy, but I don't really trust them any further than I could throw them.

I didn't read any of that above due to my short attention span, but I will answer your initial question.

I actually called the local Apple store today asking what the deal is with the white iPhone, because believe me...I AM WITH YOU!!! I wanted white since it was announced and now there is this mishap. BLECK!!! Anyways, I asked him what my options are for getting a white one if I pre-order the black on today and have it shipped to my address on the 24

1. I asked him if I could exchange it when the white is released, he said yes within 30 days, and there is no restocking fee cuz they have to do something with the new phone. but, I would have to pay for it over again...which seems weird, so that is out of the question. Reason being is because the serial number has to do with the sim card, so if I exchange it they have to renew my account, which takes away the discount

2. I asked him if a friend of mine gets the white one, can I just swap out the sim cards? He said yes, that is no problem...it will be like nothing even happened.

so in retrospect, get the black one...then once the white one comes out, have your dad get that one. then swap out the sim cards.....thats what I am gonna do with my mom.....

I just called the Apple Store a few minutes ago and the rep told me he wanted the white iPhone 4 as well and he hasn't head anything and he said unless they release a press release that they won't know until they get the first shipment in.

That's what I figured! I didn't think the guy my husband was talking to knew what he was talking about. I am so bummed...oh well, maybe I'll just get the black one.

Seriously... I think Apple fans wouldn't like the, "because we want to pad our Q3 sales numbers" response.

I'm starting to agree. At first I thought it had to be a design flaw at the last minute but now that I read more, I'm betting it's marketing. Less people want the white so they only piss off a smaller segment. Some of those will buy the black and the rest (like me) will just wait it out. They know we'll still buy an iPhone no matter if they didn't have white, the pre-orders crash or activation crash. (And you can bet if they can't the pre-orders working activation will be a nightmare.) It also generates a lot of buzz and when they finally do release the white, there will be even more. Oh well, I don't like it but it's just a phone.

Thank you for your response and sharing your situation, that is what I already planned to do. But as you noted, you didn't read my questions above, so if anyone has answers to those it would be greatly appreciated..

I certainly can't speak for iPhone 4 with 100% certainty, but my wife and I swapped iPhone 3G S's with no problem. All we did was swap the SIM cards and reboot the phones.

I doubt it'd be much different for iPhone 4.

How many per store is another big question.

I wish i knew the answer to that as well, hopefully it will come out July 2nd, seeing as in the Apple store all the bumpers are shipping for delivery on July 2nd and you can only find images of the white iPhone with bumpers on it on the Apple website.

I call bs. According to a memo? Where is that memo?

Looks like that website wants some attention.

why wouldn't they just say that at the keynote... many people were probably looking forward to getting white and will most likely not be able to get it now.. especially those not close to the retail stores.

That's a horrible plan...limit your profits by putting out a limited model only available thru Apple stores...

Come on - this is all pure speculation until we get official word from Apple.
I mean I could come up with something like that too ... " a leaked Apple memo indicates the White iPhone 4 will only be available to every fourth person in line who is carrying an iPad at launch."
We need to hear something from Apple.
