[Merged] iPhone 4 pre-order only available in black / not available in white

well, in contrast, I just purchased the iPhone 4 yesterday....but will not have it in my hands until the 24th.

So what this guy is practically saying is, you can purchase it on the 24th. But you will not be able to get it in your hands until the last week of July.

Unless you asked him that question, I don't know....I'm just reading in between the lines here

How would apple underestimate the demand if they pulled it before pre-orders even started (before they even had a chance to see the demand)?

They could have built too few units to have a decent pre-order and realized it so they decided not to allow pre-order and also in typical Apple fashion, they didnt feel the need to explain themselves ahead of time or after.

Think about it, with the backlash dont you think if Apple was having a long delay in people obtaining white iPhones that they would have atleast said that much?

I told him how I was coming over for Verizon and I wanted specifically the white iPhone and I wasnt sure when I would be able to get one and he said I could buy one at the Apple store on launch day. So Im taking from that, that I will be able to complete the transaction and port that day.

I do not doubt this, as I am sure some will be available. However, these are the same people that told my mom that when reserving, you do not receive and e-mail confirmation, and that she has to go in to pay to pick up on the 24th.

Well they were correct with the exception of the no email part.

No, they told her to come in between now and the 24th to pay, and then all she has to do is pick it up on the 24th since it will be paid for.

I already have a friend that wants to get an iPhone from being on the blackberry, I can ask him to purchase white then I'll switch with him

Why are there NO stories from Engadget, BGR, Gizmodo etc. of them trying to contact Apple regarding white iPhone availability. I wish some of these people would call up the Apple spokesperson/relations people and ask them about this directly. And if the Apple people say we con't comment on that or whatever, then let us all know about it.

Totally agree!! It's like no one cares, just because black is the more popular choice.

There is a huge difference from talking to a online sales chat rep and someone in the customer relations department.

No there isn't. None of those reps know anything about what's going on. For them to say "yes" is complete BS.

I stopped by bestbuy to reserve and the guy there told me they had already presold their white allotment. Take it for what it's worth

Yea but in regards to warrantee purposes..

When I activate/register my dad's black iphone 4 on iTunes next week with my current phone number, won't Apple have associated the black phone with me? Because I may have swapped the sim cards when the white phone comes out, but didn't I initially activate my SIM on the black phone so they'll associate that phone with me even when I later own the white one?

This would be a problem if I had some sort of warrantee issue within the first year, since I am out of state using the white phone and they need to verify I am my dad. How could we go about fixing this?

I certainly can't speak for iPhone 4 with 100% certainty, but my wife and I swapped iPhone 3G S's with no problem. All we did was swap the SIM cards and reboot the phones.

I doubt it'd be much different for iPhone 4.

This is my best guess. I just dont think they made enough to offer a pre-order. I for one will be at my Apple store in the early AM.

I got the same information from an AT&T rep when I pre-ordered last night.
She said they will have white ones for launch on the 24th.

I ordered the black one anyway. I will pickup the white one for my wifes line.

Exactly. I'd rather have the black phone I pre-ordered yesterday in my hands on the 24th with no waiting in line. Why go to the Apple store on launch day (which will be a cluster**** considering what yesterday was like) only to spend hours in line and possibly leave empty handed? No thanks.

I don't believe this for a second. I spoke with a customer relations rep on the 14th, and the leaked AT&T memo and he told me that "don't believe rumors online, apple would have announced that if it was true" and another direct quote "I guarantee the white iPhone will be available for you to pre-purchase tomorrow". Customer relations reps know absolutely nothing that a sales rep knows. And also, even if demand was limited with the white iPhone, if it was going to be available next week, why would apple still not have allowed pre-orders to see how many they would need to make, even if they shipped the white one later. Due to no pre-order option I'm convinced something went wrong with production and we will not see the white iPhone until at least mid-July.

Here's the deal though. If the white iphone will be available on launch day for pickup at stores, why not say this?! I mean apple.com says it is not available to pre-order or in-store pickup. They could have easily put there something to the effect of "Will be available on launch day on a first come first serve basis only in limited quantity."

To think and hope that they are just going to have some secretly available come launch day does not seem likely.

I had reserved a 32GB black iPhone for pickup on the 24th but Im kind of conflicted about whether I want to settle for it. I 100% want the white iPhone but was worried about it being one of those things where they never release any statement and it could be months before its available so I decided to just settle on a black one (NOT planning on returning for a white). However I dont feel so sure anymore. I might just go up to the Apple store at 3AM and if they dont end up selling the white one I will let them know to go ahead and release my iPhone that I reserved so someone else can have it.

Apple has made a statement on the White iPhone 4. It will be unavailable for pre-order and in store pick up. That's very clear. As for why they aren't shipping and when they will show up, send Steve an email. I'm sure he'll fill you in on all the details of their non-conformances, production volumes and projected numbers, and a specific date you can expect the White iPhone to release.
