And you are basing that on media reports? Touch the seam on my phone all you want and it is not game over.

Eh, good for you bud, but I do have an iPhone 4 and if the seam is touched I drop calls. A case has helped though, but people need to wake up and realize that just because they may live in an area where it doesn't affect them, it's still a big issue.

Agreed.

September brings nothing. Mark my words. Any redesign Apple makes will require FCC involvement and will effectively be a new model, which will bring on the wrath of all current Iphone 4 owners. Apple will do nothing more than offer bumpers. If they find some magical coating that doesn't affect the steel or color, doesn't flake off, doesn't cause rashes on people's hands, etc., and still fixes the attenuation issue, it will go on Iphone 5. They will not risk lawsuits and more bad press - REALLY bad press - from a silent fix. What you have now is the Iphone 4 that will continue to be sold until next summer. After that, it's game on.

I agree with this assessment.

Not in the phone department.

Disagree. Phone works 100% of the time as a phone, actually gets better reception than most overall. Had a Samsung Captivate in my house and got no signal, iPhone 4 manages to still get 1-2 bars.

As Engadget has said, the external antenna is better 90% of the time, the 10% it's vulnerable in low signal areas, just avoid it. It's ****ing simple.

Funny because everyone I know who has an Android based phone complains they always lock up, the apps suck, they have to pull the battery out of the HTC models to reset the phone, hmmm yeah that's my next phone.

Blackberry's are for business only, everyone I know who has one including my entire company complains that there are lack off apps, features are minimal compared to the rest of the market, and everyone I know has only one solution when they have a problem with their phone, pull that battery, yep considering a BB for my next phone too....

NOT

iPhone 4 is way ahead of them all, if it wasn't even with the issues which Apple will correct why did they sell so many in 3 weeks, I hardly think more than 1/8th will be returned, and there are waiting lists for them in all version plus not to mention the White one hasn't hit the streets yet, also read the article below if what you were saying was correct, man I think all the analysts need to be fired then huh...

http://money.cnn.com/2010/07/20/technology/apple_earnings/index.htm

There is no where for Apple to go but forward, especially that they create the hardware and software, one thing that is relevant on Apple's TV ads with a PC, who do you call, if you call HP they tell you to call Microsoft, if you call Microsoft, they tell you to call HP and don't get me wrong HP is a rock solid company, but really getting support or something to work right is a daunting task, I know I am in the IT field.

But..... They are giving out bumpers with every phone...

You couldn't pack them in with the phone, or else you couldn't choose your color of bumper... This way, through Apple's website, it'll be one per phone, and you get to choose your color.

EDIT: Also, if you thought this experience was crappy, try any other phone. You'll come back. Before the iPhone came to Canada, I had a RAZR. You have no idea how much I hated that phone!

But they SOLD soo many RAZR's Millions and Billions of em. What was there to Hate?

Don't EVEN get me started! Lousy, klunky interface, small screen, impossible to read fonts, crappy keyboard, cheap plastic hinge that broke far too often... I could go on.
But I, too, was one of those who owned several of them because they were still better than many other options available at the time.
But that was a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away!:D

Lol at fandroids, since their phones suck in mostly every way, they can live with it, but the iPhone has this little problem about holding it in a certain way, I mean, come on, the signal is dramatically bad because, hello?!:

Dead grip + Weak reception area = Baaad signal

And surely this math has been done and it happens to every other smartphone. But since the iPhone is the most overrated smartphone in the whole planet, the problems will be like 60% more obvious. And not to be rude, but I hate these dudes that are very proffesional and want "the perfect phone", I bet these were part of the first big wave of people who went riot on their nearest Apple Store the next day of the release. Then, other random people were like scared the first drop call they had, complain, exhange, then the whole media blows and EXXAGERATES the issues a lot more, Engadget goes way down for their faulty review. After that, Stevie needs to throw a press conference to please the pissed customers.

The iPhone 4 will be the target of jokes in the mobile industry, just like Toyota is right now in the automotive industry. It'll disappear, but for now... it's very prevalent. It's just something you'll have to deal with.

that's your problem...mine works as does my co workers....take Steve's advice and bring yours back...sorry you have a bad one...I get fast data and no drops with less than two bars....sometimes NO BARS
You're claiming that you have fast data when you have no signal?!

And you are basing that on media reports? Touch the seam on my phone all you want and it is not game over.
He/she is probably also basing it on Apple's acceptance of the issue.

So, after comparing it to a single mediocre phone, you are claiming that the iPhone 4 is the best phone on the market? A fair test, I'm sure everyone will agree.

In my honest opinion, I believe Apple would have liked to be able to recall, but the fact is, they can't afford to. It would be a huge negative hit for Apple. A global recall of such a hyped product from one of the most prestigious tech companies would seriously hurt them in the future. The disappointment of the fans - which, let's face it, Apple used to live off - would flood the media and it would be a PR nightmare. Not only that, but also money related restrictions too - it would be too expensive to recall, re-design, re-produce and re-release 3 million+ iPhone 4's (several months down the line). They wouldn't sell the same volume either due to lack of trust from the consumers.

I'm disappointed with Apple, but I can't say I've had that before. I'm not planning to return my iPhone 4 as I have no problems using it (naked), but I will never deny that the fundamental design flaw exists.

I'll wrap myself up in my flameproofs, I'm expecting armageddon in this little forum of :apple: lovers.

Umm no, that was one personal example, also better than my pervious 3GS. Should I waste my time and pull up all the reviews that reference the antenna as being better overall than those already out there including the Nexus One? I'm just bringing up recent, relevant smart phones, not sure if you are talking about flip phones and such.

Who cares if they make fun of your phone? It it works and you love it, none of that matters. Just enjoy it and quit worrying about it.

You're ignoring a lot of sociological truisms about human nature and our culture if you think its that simple. In fact its a sign of insecurity. A defense mechanism.

For the past few days i've encountered alot of people who have made jokes of my iPhone 4. "My phone dropped calls, I thought I had an iPhone 4 in my hand! lol!"

Not only did it happen once, but almost every time I show my iPhone 4 now. Less people are taking the phone seriously.

This kind of negative publicity may have a serious effect on the long term mind thought of Apple phones. Maybe the computers, iPads and iPods have a strong loyal base, but the iPhone is now the most important revenue driver and "halo" device from Apple.

Apple needs to make sure the iPhone 5 is nothing less than amazing. Seriously this time.

bad troll is bad. :D

the phone is fine, get over it.

:eek::eek: Say wha?!?! Apple is one of the few companies that has customer service above their bottom line on their priority list! They didn't need to send $175 million on free bumpers for everyone, but they did to keep their customers happy.

u can't be serious..? they didn't need to? .. their brand was suffering by the minute.. and they took the CHEAPEST WAY OUT. lol @ u thinking they did it cuz of the love of their customers..

yall some fanatics 4 real. wake up and realize this is all business. If they were doing this to keep customers happy and not for a business move to satisfy critics that were giving it bad reviews.. they would have been giving them out on individual basis when people called in reporting the problem or went in the stores complaining.. however it was clear that they instructed their customer service reps initially to NOT give it out..and to actually give 21 excuses why it could be happening.. till pressure started 2 mount.

There is no need for a recall. You are just blowing this out of proportion.

But there is nothing else that Apple can do. There is no way to fix the issue, because it's not unique to the iPhone 4! Apple does not care about bad reviews, the iPhone 4 was selling as fast as possible... and it still is. The only thing that seems to help the issue are bumpers. And Apple is giving everyone a free bumper. It is especially generous when you take into account that only %.55 of AppleCare calls are related to the antenna.

I was at the movie theater the other day and the couple behind me was talking about their father (in-law) upgrading from a 3Gs and they had talked him out of it due to all the "problems" the iPhone 4 has been having. Everytime I talk to someone about my iPhone, they ask if I have those problems they're hearing about. Unfortunately, I have to say yes. Great iPod, bad phone.

As an android fan. I feel bad for iPhone 4 users.

I don't feel bad that the phone was released with a glitch (its funny, and it does happen)... but that SJ is jerking you guys around.

This is one situation where you guys should man-up and vote with your dollar. Why not return your iPhone4 and use your 3GS until they fix the issue once and for all?

There's nothing wrong with the 3Gs, so why not?

I have had the same experiences. It's sort of turned into a bad party trick. Everyone wants to see it (the signal decrease) happen. I get ooohs and aaahs.

The other fallout is that more and more people are asking me what phone they should get. "Should I get the new iPhone or phone x?" I just don't think this would have happened in the past. People would not have thought twice about buying an iPhone. Now, although many people are buying them, they are beginning to seriously question it.

...only %.55 of AppleCare calls are related to the antenna.

This is probably a very true statement, but it certainly doesn't reflect the true extent of the problem. People calling AppleCare about antenna issue does not equal people having antenna issue. And Apple knows this. Why else would they be giving away a free $30 product to 99.45% of iPhone 4 owners who supposedly are free of issues? It's also very odd that this deal ends on September 30th.

Tell them about the $11 I just saved yesterday at Best Buy by using the RedLaser app.
