How would you be able to text on a phone that's the size of an iPod nano? Hell, how would you type anything? The keyboard would take up the whole screen.

On the regular iPhone, the keyboard does not even take up half of the screen:

So you could just display one ore two lines of text above the keyboard in landscape mode.

Just make it to iPod, calls, photos, contacts, SMS, calender, calculator.
Not everyone needs e-Mail, maps, browser, youtube etc. Some people just want a cell phone you can use and don't want to throw out the window because the interface drives you crazy.

I don't use all the smartphone features on my iPhone.
- youTube: unnecessary, only fun on WIFI, hard to navigate and find stuff
- Safari: zoom in, scroll, zoom out, tap, hit back cuz it clicked on the wring thing, wait for page to load again...
- Mail: Does not sync POP accounts to my Mac, no junk folder, no rules, no smartfolders...
- Stocks: Updates are öagging hours behind...
- Weather: I can forecast the weather for a few hours by looking up in the sky
- Clock: Actually, I use that a lot. Wouldn't wanna miss it
- Maps: Useful in emergencies but again, only fun when in WIFI. No public WIFIs around here so... yea. I guess it makes sense on the 3G iPhone with GPS
- Photos: weee, I can look at all the pictures I got on iPhoto, but smaller. Still good to show someone recent pictures so it's nice to have.
- Notes: I use it a lot for taking notes and for the shopping list. Remember to buy something, just pull out the iPhone, add it to the list and forget about it.

Still, Apple needs to cater the 5-16 year old audience (yes, most 7 year olds have cell phones around here for "emergencies" and because their parents are control-freaks or can't deny a kid anything) and the iPhone is just too expensive. So an iPhone nano is probably going to show up at some point and prepaid is the best and most popular solution for that age group.

no need for an iphone nano

I don't think they would need an iphone nano in their product line. This time next year when ATT subsidizes the phone even further, it could potentially be down to $100, at least in the US.

So, why waste $$ and time developing a slightly cheaper one? Other parts of the world are a few years into their 3G cycles, so apple really should be thinking in the other direction. A larger iphone would be more interesting to me. They could add a couple inches to the dimensions and vastly increase the screen space while staying far away from the tablet market. If you're already paying ATT $130/month for unlmited data, wouldn't you spend $600 for a jumbo iphone (The 'Jphone)? I would.

That second mock up looks quite decent. Most of my friends prefer simple intuitive ui's, like Sony Ericsson's offerings as opposed to the more complex nokias.
The camera always seems like a popular feature, despite not being used that much. Average teenagers measure a phone's appeal in camera megapixels (not kidding) but I guess the Apple logo would make up for that.
Hmm, I still don't think it'd be a big hit, not with the iphone 3G in the market.

I'll believe it when there's more rumors on this.

And... wouldn't an iPhone nano imply an iPod nano with multi-touch display some time after?

I really hope Apple brings another phone to the market. Except this time I don't want to be forced to buy from Rogers or Fido. I would be willing to pay $299-399 for an iPhone without extenting my contract for another 3 years with Rogers. But sadly right now thats not possible. Scalpers are selling iPhone 3G's for near $800 right now. :(

An iPhone Nano would be fine as long as it kept what makes the iPhone so great, its beautiful design and great touch-screen. :)

An iPhone Nano is a great idea. Lots of people just want a cheap phone that works great. A Nano phone with a few less features and a smaller screen that had the elegance of a typical Apple product would be right up their alley. Not everyone wants a golden brick in their pocket.

Developers shouldn't be developing apps that are screen resolution dependent anyway. If it were legal to say what was in the SDK one might say it even says so, if it did in fact say so.

I don't think Apple is looking toward a nano model for price differentiation. I think they overcame that hurdle by switching the iPhone 3G to subsidized plans .

That is to say, Apple doesn't need a cheap iPhone nano when it already has a cheap iPhone.

Smaller Phone With Fewer Features

Yeah seriously. Though the iPhone is great, I definitely want something smaller. Currently I carry around a chocolate, which I really like because of its small size, all right mp3 player, nice speaker, and ease of use.

But if Apple were to bring out a CHEAPER phone, what would be its features? All I want is phone, texting, mp3 player, and iCal calendar.

Give me 2.1 that works as advertised before a new phone. 2.0 sucks Big Time!

This was said earlier: "Unless the iPhone nano has NO App Store, every application out there is going to need to be rewritten to fit on the smaller screen."

It's not happening.

yeah, even if the iphone nano hypothetically became a big seller (think about it, it would do very well), those programmers who are making all that money from the App store wouldn't bother rewritting versions of their program for another cash cow..

whatever... of course they would! they bothered to write an entire program for the iphone - and they will bother to write one for a hypothetical iphone nano for more sales.

The nano would have less power and less screen estate so that would automatically differentiate it from the iphone 3g but there is no reason why Apple would limit it so that it couldn't have 3rd parties apps. they generally wouldn't be as good.

i think it would be stupid to release an "iphone nano" it would take away from sales of the iphone

IMO a smaller cheaper iphone would be stupid

Though they say experience leads to wisdom, I think you are the antithesis of this lovely adage.

'iPhone Nano' buyers are not the same as iPhone buyers. I will never buy the iPhone when its plan is so expensive, and the phone offers features I simply don't need. However, if the iPhone were smaller, cheaper, and had more 'bare bones' features (mp3; phone; oh, and a popout USB would be SICK so we could use it as a flash too - cables SUCK), I think Apple would see a sizeable increase in buyers. This will be especially true if Apple can glean a similar profit margin from its smaller phone. After all, we all remember the studies that came out after the initial release of the iPhone detailing that Apple would increase its market if it dropped the price. Despite the ostensible price drop, consumers are paying more than ever for their iPhones, and while many consumers haven't seemed to notice, savvy buyers have, and continue to hold out for a cheaper option.

Beside, can you imagine how sexy a small iPhone could be?

...just bring out the 32 gig iphone please then i'll be off to AT&T.
I could see them just having an ipod and phone but not the email, safari etc on it

dream iPhone nano

I think that an iPhone nano could work as long as apple remembered that it is a "nano." I think that an iPhone nano would be good with a scroll wheel that flipped down to reveal a number pad. A touch screen would be rediculous on a nano, typing this message on the iPhone is hard enough, making it smaller would be horrible.

All the nano would need is a phone, SMS, contacts, and iPod. Take out all the net features. After all thepoint of nano is to be smaller and cheaper.

I hated my Sony Ericsson w810i. So many design flaws... if you wanted to make your call louder, it started playing music because right opposite the volume rocker was the play/pause button and it's seriously hard to press one without the other. The media player is just unusable. I tried, I really tried, but you just can't use it if you have more than 2 songs. Camera was ok but so complicated to activae and put into the right mode. Battery life indicater had 3 states: Full (100%-95%), half full (95%-5%) and empty (5%-0%). Had to charge it every day cuz there was no way of knowing how full the battery actually was. Oh and it took 7 minutes between switching on and being able to make a call. I could enter my pin, do 2 key presses and it would just freeze for minutes, probably loading my address book or something... The menus were ok but you had to drill down a lot for basic stuff. I love how Nokia is re-making the old phones, few feature, simple design, cheap.

flip phone

A flip phone that had GPS and mail on the upper screen, with the home screen on the bottom would be nice. It would be difficult to implement safari on a tiny screen.

Considering the fact that the over all cost of a 3G iPhone is more than the V1, and the fact that there are still many, many, most in fact, people who are not willing to pay $200 for a phone and then a minimum of $90 a month in services, it's not a cheap phone. Far from it. Apple could make a cool slim phone with stripped down features that would be subsidized for $0 - $99, not require 3G or even data and a billion more customers. And have a billion more MobileMe customers overloading their servers, and a billion more people waiting in line for horrible customer service.

Fix what you Market before you put out a new Product.

Iphone 3G

Cracks
Terrible 3G reception and coverage (98% of USA doesn't get 3G with AT&T)
No voice dialing (feature even on the cheapest Phones and a safety hazard that the FTC should be looking into)
iCloud (Doesn't synch as promised and is not push I-Anything)
Give me a battery "I" can replace at no charge (other than the battery)

Software 2.0
Crashes when running applications due to Apple's QC of 2.0 before release

Battery draining as much as a Black Hole

No Copy & Paste

To get turn by turn directions (if Apple allows it) I'll have to by it from Tom Tom for $99 year. Add that to your contract costs

Apple put out the same model as the first phone and gave useless GPS that I can stare at a dot at to see where I am.

APPLE IS CASHING IN ON A GREAT DESIGN AND PUTTING IT IN AS MANY COUNTRIES AS POSSIBLE TO GET THE CASH.

THE SOFTWARE HASN'T BEEN STABLE SINCE 1.1.4

APPLE ADDRESS YOUR ISSUES BEFORE PUTTING OUT A NEW PRODUCT.

SHAMEFULL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

craaaappp. Christ, this phone has been out for a little over 3 weeks and we are already talking about another version this Christmas. No thanks, Apples really being cocky now. They need to get the hell away from the phone and start working on new macs and ipods. Im tired of hearing about the iphone lately. Don't get me wrong, I love the iphone obviously cause I have one, but it's time to shut up.. talk bout something else apple..

Maybe Apple should try to perfect the current iPhone before advancing into more versions of the device.
