Why would anyone want a version of the iPhone that has less functionality? If you just want it for a calendar, an MP3 player, and a phone, and don't care about the app store or Safari, I don't see the point of getting it. Sure it looks nice, but the large screen even by itself is what MAKES the iPhone. A smaller version that lacked support of these keystone features would be crippled in the worst sense of the word.

However, if it had the same functionality as it's big brother but used a pay-as-you-go plan, I could actually afford it. $70 a month for phone and internet is the going price for most carriers, and it's just not worth it for me.

Such as lack of voice dialing
Copy and paste
Turn by turn navigation, even though it has GPS
A stable operating system (waite that was 1.1.4)
Applications that don't crash
iTunes 7.7.1 as bad as Mobile Me when launched.

Thanks for the reminder.

Forgot the smiley that makes it OK.:)

I am almost never opinionative towards people on this site. But do you actually own anything from Apple? Or plan on purchasing anything from apple? If not go away, or be productive towards the site. i just went through all your posts. And in a non derogatory manner, but rather factual, you are an idiot.

Back on topic. I think the phone would be nice. Being stuck in a plan the only problem i see with the iPhone. Problems with the OS and hardware and so on are all what comes with technology. I have never owned a piece of technology that did not have its shortcomings, faults, or problems. Never.

Well, if they make this phone they will have to do it without an onscreen keyboard because it can't get any smaller than it is.

Petite iPhone

Reasonable prospect. No phone dial. Blue-tooth or wired headset with voice dialing. Music/ volume control via current nano wheel/screen.

No new iPod touch. 8/16/32 is just becoming 16/32/64.

Not 16/32/64, because 64 GB of flash memory is still too steep in today's market. I can see just a 16/32 models, and keeping the same prices. Apple can't compete with the iPhone 3G with the iPod touch.

A quick mock-up I made for your viewing pleasure. The screen is the same width and about 60% of the height of the current iPhone. Home button is a tiny bit smaller (and maybe slightly less recessed for easier pressing), all other physical buttons stay the same size for ease of use. Enjoy :)

I own an original 8gb iPhone (still with $100 apple credit for buying it the day it was offered).
I own a 16gb Black 3G iPhone.

My first Mac was a Mac Plus with and 800k floppy drive running OS and PageMaker. Then from there went all the way to the Mac Clone days and finally entered Senior Management and found out what an OS was about with Windows.

So Yes, I've spent and authorized $100's of thousands of dollars on Apple Purchases.

I like the iPhone but am SICK AND TIRED OF APPLE AND APPLE USERS MAKING EXCUSES FOR POOR OPERATING SYSTEMS AND LACK OF CUSTOMER SERVICE UNTIL THE MASSES GET A HOLD OF WALLSTREET AND GET STEVE TO MAKE A MOVE.

So to answer your original question I'm into Apple 20 some years and soured on them. Found Windows and have never been happier.

iPhone (in concept and design is brilliant) Apple is doing what it did to every other product it's made and raping it for profit.

Read the rest of your reply.

Making excuses for Apple when they put out bad software and hardware and making Microsoft the bad evil software company for practicing the same game.

So in my eyes who's the idiot. The guy that follows sheep or the guy that expects better from a company than the same old crap of putting out software and hardware before it's time?

Here's an idea to sell more iPhones (in the USA) without an "iPhone mini": Make the data plan OPTIONAL!
This doesn't affect me since I've been using mobile data for years, but I am sure there are literally millions of people who would LOVE the iPhone that can't justify $75/mo+ for a basic subscription plan. Many people point out that the iPhone almost requires a data plan given it's functionality, but that really isn't true for many that are in the presence of WiFi hotspots all day! IT PISSES ME OFF that AT&T is taking advantage of everyone in that regard and forcing data plans just to buy an iPhone, as this is NOT standard practice and is not a requirement for ANY OTHER phone. It pisses me off even MORE that Apple is allowing this crap. Can't they see how many customers they are losing! Not everyone is going to come around on the $75-$100 a month plans just because they want an iPhone --- especially in the current economic climate!

Not true. What makes the iPhone is its ease of use and simple syncing with our computers in applications we already use.

I want to be able to plug in my phone for charging, and while I do so, I want it to copy in all of the new changes I've made to my iCal. I want to be able to easily take notes in my phone. My current phone HAS a calendar, and HAS a place to take notes, but it isn't nearly as beautiful as the iPhone, nor does it sync with iCal.

You are SERIOUSLY parochial if you think the only reason people are interested in the iPhone is its safari features.

and you're loony if you think that the iPhone is the only phone that syncs with a mac like the iPhone can.

and you're loony if you think that the iPhone is the only phone that syncs with a mac like the iPhone can.

You are making the assumption that all users have Mac's. 89.x% of us use the PC where the only synching option is to use Mobile Sucks or Exchange for email.

No Way - Jose

Think about what the iPhone is about. Why have a smaller version? This is just stupid. NO WAY will it happen. I can see a redesign of the iPods, maybe a Touch Nano, but not an iPhone - which is a divergence device. Just stop it and go clean your room!

It is only a matter of time till this happens. Soon (3-5 years) there will be no iPods, only iPhones. Apple soooo needs to do this, and doing it now would be like a dagger in the heart of all the cell phone competitors :)

It needs to be the iPhone but smaller form factor with a 2.8" screen at the same resolution and universal landscape keyboards cause you would need to type in landscape probably all the time. And of course Apple would have to leave out a few features from the real iPhone to differentiate it and make everything fit into a smaller design.

Selling this for $99 or $149 WOW, they are already conquering the smart phone market and now they would conquer the regular phone market and turn it into the smart phone market at the same time :) Brilliant :)

Motorola will be soooo screwed lol!!!

Ridiculous

Seeing as the current iteration of the iPhone is selling so well at it's price range I don't see why apple would introduce a cheaper phone unless the profit margin is extraordinary. Even if it grabbed a portion of the cell-phone market that is interested in less features (who this might be escapes me), or people who want a cheaper cell phone plan, I don't think AT&T would be happy with apple for creating an option that would cannibalize sales of the current model and it's higher cell phone rates.

whoa. I read somewhere it was only like 4 bucks for 8 gbs of flash memory! So thats 32 bucks. Maybe i read something way off.

how are you suppose to talk on this thing? it doesn't come anywhere near your mouth when you are talking

So where will this iPhone Nano fit in the product line? It's not gonna be a perfect phone, that is for sure. Product differentiation will kill that.
