I bet that woman in the article picture is looking at the camera as though to say "wow, how do you work this thing? Gosh isn't it pretty!" :p

and the daily mail are crap - when they aren't trying to ban GTA and Manhunt they're reviving old rumours!

Personally, I think that Apple may just competitively price the iPhone 3G on PAYG (which is due out for christmas, according to 02).

Also, I think Apple should be "nanoing" the Mac Pro before anything else. I always wanted to purchase a Mac Pro, but I found it too bulky comparing with other PCs. I'm using the first generation Macbook Pro, and am planning on buying a Mac Pro...but it's really too huge.

What do you live in? A refrigerator box?

Would be a good move to capture the lowend market, basically a iPod nano with GSM. No apps and no internet but a basic phone with iPod functionality to compete directly against the Sony Walkman GSM.

Apple would sell millions and they don't compete with the big iPhone so i don't see why this is a bad move. I want a bigger screen iPod tablet but a cheap small iPhone as an extra would be nice. :)

That's a great statement, I agree completely. When the iPhone was just out, a stripped down iPhone sans the phone (Touch) was released later on to compete with other PMPs. An iPhone sans the 3rd capability (internet/apps) would be perfect for a "cheapie." Hell, that'd be the ultimate freebie if the subsidy took care of it.

I read that, It's kinda stupid they even give a price. It's unlikely that the specifics of a new Apple product would be in the Sunday Paper before the Internet.

Anything that comes from the Daily Mail makes me question its validity

That said, the 02 website says that pay as you go will be available "Later this year." Makes me wonder why they didn't just release pay as you go with the other packages this year.

I think a lot of people are assuming that the rumoured iPhone Nano will match the full size model feature for feature. It could be that Apple plan to offer a combined basic phone and music player and not bother with the internet access, or the iApps.

Effectively it would be a phone back-to-back with an iPod. A lot of teenagers in the UK use pay-as-you-go mostly for texting. A simplfied iPhone Nano might well appeal to this demographic.

I think there is a market for a "dumb down" iphone. Frankly, I LOVE my new 3G but the main features I wanted was sync with ical and address book and the they way the iphone handled voicemail. A "dumb down" version could easily have those features and I suspect many people would feel that is all they needed on their phone. If it had music features on it that would be a plus. Many people who have no intention of getting data, or care to view video would find an easy to use phone with the above features desirable, especially at a reduced price.

Discounting for a moment the source of these rumours, I think that there is potentially a huge market for an inexpensive, feature reduced, pay-as-you-go version of the iPhone.

The market would be completely different to the present iPhone market and, quite frankly, Apple would be daft not to do this at some point.

My children would simply love something like this...

I'm using the first generation Macbook Pro, and am planning on buying a Mac Pro...but it's really too huge. On the other hand, I want to buy an Apple display along with the Mac Pro, but the displays that Apple is offering haven't been updated for a long, long time...

The Mac Pro is considered a "minitower" by several chain Apple resellers (which is degrading, what with it being the most powerful single computer on the planet). It's smaller than most PC towers.

Before people poo-poo this rumour, we already know there is a 'product transition' to come and new iPods / Macs are usually released in late summer/early autumn.

So what are people expecting for September?

A 'Mac Tablet' seems a pointless device to me. Bigger than an iPhone, but smaller than a laptop. There's no need for something to plug this gap - nobody wants an Etch-A-Sketch type device.

An iPhone Nano seems a very possible device to me. If Apple are serious about becoming big players in the phone market, they need more than their single, feature packed, but bulky, model of phone.

They're going to need more than a tweaked iPod lineup to make it a decent Christmas. Everybody's already bought them!

I think everyone forgets that the original iPhone done with motorola was a flop. Why would they want round 2 of that crap.

I seriously doubt they will kill their flagship product now with a stripped down version, but I have been wrong before....
What makes the iphone great is its mobile safaripad like qualities not that it can play music. I do not even bother to load much music onto the iphone anymore... just stream it. :apple:

The ROKR w/ iTunes was a flop b/c Apple did not have 100% control over the phone. They basically wedged in a music player based on the ROKR specs and got Frankenstein.

A stripped down iPhone would be a very different product. It would have an Apple based GUI and be usable. I think you need to stop seriously doubting and get back class to learn a bit more about demographics and consumer needs. What YOU want is not necessarily what EVERYONE wants. And when you have a demographic of even 10% that wants a smaller basic phone, w/o the monthly data fees, you fill that need b/c it's money in the bank and increases your market share.

Personally I see the desire for a non-PDA type iPhone is probably greater than for the iPhone 3G. If Apple could get the price to $200 so it could be 100% subsidized, i.e., "free" to the consumer, it would sell like gangbusters and cause real fear in the hearts of CellCo execs.

Insane. That statement is utterly divorced from reality.

There are about 1,000,000,000 that could use an iTablet in the world, when they get wireless. The notebook computer is a pointless device, or will be when the tablets come into being. Think about how stupid the design of a laptop is, how ergonomically awful it is, how non-mobile it is aside from being able to be carried from sitting position to sitting position.

A billion people?! Really?! :p

I have heard a rumour that the Daily Mail had a bulls@*t generator installed in their offices in the late 80's. It is still working rather well by all accounts.;)

Not gonna happen. It's not Apple's style, App Store wouldn't work on it, and the source is not reliable.

Not going to happen. But why would you want it to?? To make the cost of the phone even CHEAPER?

A billion people, huh? ~1/6 of the earth is dying for an "iTablet"? The notebook computer is not a pointless device, that's a ridiculous notion, and even with the advent of an Apple Tablet the notebook is not a ridiculous device.

Ergonomically awful? Really? As opposed to a tablet, of course, which is perfectly designed to be used with ease  This sounds like a post from someone who's never used a tablet.

Yeah, the design of the laptop is so awful and non-mobile... it'll never catch on. :D What on earth is so bad about the design of notebooks?

Don't get me wrong: I'd love an Apple tablet as much as the next guy. But to say that it's going to dominate over notebooks and laptops is just plain silly.

I think an iPhone Nano is a very possible device and I think it would sell like hotcakes. Take the old Nano form factor (not the new fat one), remove the clickwheel and add the iPhone interface but without Safari. But keep the camera (all cheap cell phones have cameras these days). Sell it for $99 subsidized with 2 year contract. Introduce it in time for the Christmas buying season. I bet they couldn't make enough units to sell. I know I'd buy one in a heart beat. Plus I'd also buy an iPod Touch so as to have internet capability via WiFi. I think they would complement each other nicely. There is an entire market out there that would like to have an iPhone like device but doesn't need the Internet on it and don't want to pay the $30 data rate but would like to have the iPod capability on their phone.

I see your point, but the mobile browsing experience is one of the big things that sets the iPhone and Touch apart from competition. I mean, when it was first rumored here, was it not known as a "Safari Pad" or something similar?
