I have a Droid and have had one for about a month. I live in a place were AT&T service is not even available at this time. If you have any specific questions about the Droid feel free to send me a private message.

If you want to stay with Verizon, get the droid. If you are willing to jump to AT&T, get the iPhone. I still highly doubt the Iphone on Verizon rumors. Everyone with a blog is an "analyst" these days and none of them know what they are talking about, they are just hypothesizing.

Thanks, guys. This kinda reaffirms what I've been thinking, though your responses did push me to visit an AT&T near my house that I forgot existed and I spent some time in there, last night. Turns out, AT&T has pretty good coverage where my house is and where I work (L.A.), and, even better, it turns out that I'm not under any contract with Verizon, right now, so I could probably jump to AT&T, right now. Though with WWDC seemingly set for late June, might it be a good time to stick with the phone I have now and wait for a potential iPhone 4G or whatever new version of the iPhone comes out? I suppose I ask since it seems that the new iPhone upgrade might be significant.

Thanks!

With decisions like this it really pays to make yourself a checklist and go through it step by step. The decision is a very individual thing. Ask yourself questions like:

How is AT&T service in your area and the places you frequent?
Are Apple's huge selection of apps important to you?
Are you a heavy Google user (gmail, etc.)?
Is wide-open multitasking critical to you? Are you willing to Jailbreak?

You get the idea. No one else can answer for you, because it depends on the person. But others can point out things you should consider.

If you really want an iPhone now, but think you might want to switch networks in a year or get the "4G" iPhone in 2010, consider getting a used iPhone on Ebay that's not under contract. Just an idea.

I'd say wait until WWDC. Thats what I did when I made the jump... of course I am one of the ones that hate the ATT service where I am at (Colorado Springs/Fountain). Hoping that VZW someday gets the ithingy.

Anyone Have A Motorola Droid?

Thinking about getting one tomorrow because we only have Verizon in South Dakota, and I will be waiting for the iPhone, just wondering if anyone had one and their thoughts. Thanks

I got mine a month and a half ago. Overall it's a nice phone... I'd rather have an iPhone, but until that (hopefully) comes to Verizon, the Droid seems to be the next best thing. App support has a long way to go compared to the iPhone (iPhone facebook app is much better for example), but it gets the job done and should get better as more people come onto Android. I had never had a phone with a keyboard before, but I have no problem with the physical keyboard. I'd go for it if I were you. Nice phone.

My brother has one. Nothing too spectacular about it. However, I did realize that it is nice to not have your fingers and the on-screen keyboard blocking the majority of the screen when you're typing. Also, he has some app that lets him talk to generate an SMS, which is pretty cool (and AFAIK, not even possible yet with the iPhone for third-party developers).

I live in South Dakota myself and have a Moto Droid. In South Dakota, Verizon is the only way to go now and at least for the next two years. AT&T is supposed to be taking over the old Alltel properties, but that is going to be a painful transition. Also, I think it is hard right now to believe AT&T will bring statewide 3G when they change over all of the towers. I really like my Droid and if you have any questions just ask. Later fellow So Dakotan.

New phone time: Droid vs. Droid Eris. Thoughts?

Hey everyone. After being stuck with a Moto W315 for the past two yearsm I'm getting an upgrade for my birthday. My two options are the Droid and the Eris.... so the Droid is $179 and the Eris is $99. The difference between the two would have to be out of my own pocket.

What exactly is in the Droid (besides the keyboard, duh) that the Eris doesn't have? More importantly, is whatever it is worth having?

I'm just your typical texting teen with a nerdy twist and Android sounds like loads of fun. :D

The Droid has a bigger screen, a physical keyboard and it has Android 2.0 while the Eris has 1.5. I would get the Eris over the Droid.

Also, hardware wise it is the difference between the iPhone 3G and the iPhone 3GS (just for an analogy people around here get).

If the money isn't an issue for you I would say get the Droid. I say that because I believe it is a better phone overall (full disclosure: I have/had one)

Sorry for the threadjack, but I have a question about Android. Can Android be upgraded on your phone? For instance, could the Eris be upgraded to 2.0 after you buy it? This is assuming the hardware can handle the new version, of course.

Yes, Android can be updates. Recently upgraded a 1.5 Android to 1.6 Android on my Archos 5.

To the OP, I think it depends highly on the form factor your looking for. Yes, the hardware on the Eris is worse then the Droid, but I believe HTC has promised 2.0 Android upgrades for the Eris(I believe, you'd like to look this up I think before you buy)

But if you want a hardware keyboard...the Droid is where you'd look. And better specs. (its really just if you want the keyboard or not)

Ehhhh.... I'm completely and solidly on the fence about this one... What did you like about yours?

I don't particularly care for slide out keyboards, I hear the Droid's isn't the best, and I really like HTC Sense UI that comes on the Eris.

Okay.... thanks. When I went to the store today I found that I don't know sh*t about fancy phones because I couldn't even figure out how to unlock them initially.

The Eris does have the cute thing going for it... lol. The software keyboard on it sucks compared to the iPhone/iPt though.

I, for one, liked the keyboard. My husband didn't like the physical keyboard so he just didn't use it. You dot have to if you don't want to. The Sense UI from HTC is great, but the thing with Android is that you can just get one of the home replacement apps and download the Sense UI (well, for all intents and purposes it's the same). The reason I chose the Droid over the Eris was the updated version of the OS an the updated hardware as well. While HTC has in fact said that Android 2.0 is coming to the Eris they didn't (at least not when I brought mine) say when. In the end I went to the store and played with both. I liked the Droid better, so I got it.

Another vote for the droid, that's what I got. But I would wait to wednesday just to be sure all the rumors about a verizon iphone are true or not, if they are I'll be pissed(but still paying the ETF )

I have the Droid Eris and it's a great phone.

I went into the Verizon store knowing I would get the Droid. Once I saw the Droid, it just looked way too big! I don't want to be carrying that around in my pocket. I saw the Droid Eris and became interested in it. It has a nice form factor. Also, the price was cheap. I bought mine during the buy one get one free promo and I got another Droid Eris for my aunt. The Droid does have a faster processor and a crappy keyboard. If you want a big, fast beast of a phone, get the Droid. If you want a small, nice interface phone, get the Droid Eris.

The Droid Eris is expected to get Android OS 2.0 or 2.1 in the first of quarter of 2010. We will be getting the update in very very near future.
