Verizon calls their entire network 3G even though it's made up of EVDO and EVDO rev a. EVDO is similar to AT+T edge speeds so your fast connection must have been EVDO rev a while the other poster must have had a regular EVDO connection.

Speeds will vary on the Verizon network depending on if you have an EVDO connection or a EVDO rev a connection even though your droid says you have a 3G connection.
I'm sorry but that post is really incorrect. First off EVDO and EDGE don't compare at all on consumer phones, if you don't believe this post see the below poster I quoted as he has about 30 years of experience to correct me or you. First EDGE averages 200Kbs on most phones including the iphone, EVDO rev 0 is generally in the 400-700kbs range though verizon says about 500, rev a is 5.8/1.4....I used a Droid and used the speed test app and got 2MBs about 1000 feet from a tower. Verizon has updated its EVDO network to all EVDO rev a last I checked. And finally EVDO rev a and EVDO 0 being called "3G" is no different than UMTS upgrades like HSDPA, HSPA+, HSUPA, etc. being called "3G", there all fast and there all 3rd Generation technologies as far as the average consumer is concerned. Of course I'm a nerd and anylise this crap like no other and do bandwidth test's like its my job but thats just me.
*groan*

What would be different and refreshing around here, is a post where the author actually is old and/or educated enough to know how to use "their" and "they're"... instead of just using "there" in every spot. Ditto for "your" and "you're".

Well not everyone's first language is English...Its sort of hard at times to type everything with perfection but I get your drift there.

I purchased a Moto Droid for several reasons. One of the biggest reasons is because the iPhone has never been available in my state. I have a 32 GB 2nd Gen iPod Touch (I still haven't decided if I will sell it or not) so I have somewhat of an idea what an iPhone is like and really the two devices compare quite favorably. The biggest advantage of the Touch is the ability to sync to iTunes. With the Droid I have to load my music by dragging and dropping. It works fine that way, but isn't as slick.

The biggest advantage of the Droid in my mind is the beautiful high resolution display. If you compare the two side by side the display on the Droid is much better. The Droid multi-tasks well and is very snappy. It is much faster then my iPod Touch, but of course I know the new iPhones/Touches have an improved processor. I have found a lot of neat applications in the Android marketplace even though they only have a fraction of what Apple has available. Google voice search and Google maps are great.

I actually find myself typing more on the virtual keyboard, but the slide out qwerty isn't bad to type on. It's a little flat, but remember the Droid is a slider yet not much thicker then the iPhone. They had to save space somewhere. The only complaint I had was the camera not auto focusing correctly, but somehow that issue seemed to resolve itself in the night and now works much better.

The Verizon 3G network is fast and works well even in the rural areas of South Dakota. Voice quality is excellent and the antenna seems to pull in signal better then other phones I have owned. It's a smart phone with a very strong phone and you don't see that very often when it comes to smart phones.

I don't think people need to put down the Droid. It is a wonderful phone in it's own right. I notice all of these posts trying to pick apart the Droid for this reason or that, but it is just as good as the iPhone. I never said "better" I just said "as good." If you claim that the iPhone is so great that no one will ever consider a Droid, then why even worry about it? Keep talking about your iPhones and let us experience the new world of Android.

yeah

another Droid thread be still my heart! when Droid out sell Iphone and then Blackberry they can be the Iphone and Blackberry killer till then they are just the latest braggers. btw Apple never set it's self up to be as big as it is, they just developed a good product. so if I was the competition I would focus on research and development and if you have a great product people will find you. not because you are trying to say you are better then the competition. how much money in advertising have they spent on Droid saying it better then the Iphone. Why not just show us how great the Droid is. let it speak for it's self. ok I am done!

I went to the Verizon store yesterday to see what the Motorola Droid could do. Thoroughly unimpressed. The internet was slow and the salesman kept blaming the wireless connection in the store.

While I was holding the phone, the battery cover fell off. It was incredibly flimsy. The store personnel had put the anti-theft wires on the removable cover. Had I been a thief, I could have unplugged the power cable and had a Droid, without a back cover.

If you thought the AT&T people were not educated about the iPhone, you should see the Verizon people in the corporate store here. I think there was only one person in the entire store who knew anything about the Motorola Droid, and he admitted to reading MacRumors and Engadget. He told me to wait until the next HTC Droid comes out in a couple of months.

Also the phone claims that Flash is coming to the Droid in the first quarter of 2010. The salesman told me that it will kill the battery life. Nice sales technique, don't you think?

Move along, there is nothing to see here.

I actually have a really hard time believing that. Mostly because my phone doesn't always say "3G"...

this used to happen with my blackberry storm. i would reach in my pocket to grab the phone and would end up with 2 pieces in my hand. the phone and the battery cover.

every time a new touch phone comes out its a iphone killer. blackbeery storm. the iphone killer. storm 2, the new iphone killer. palm pre the iphone killer. the droid. new iphone killer.

I really want a Droid, but it's not out in my country yet. Well, I'll wait and see what the Nokia N900 and Sony X10 are all about. Perhaps I'll just end up buying an iPhone outright. I really dont want it, and would prefer something with a keyboard (no, the x10 doesn't have one either, but whatever), but I don't know if I can wait!

If the main reason you want a Droid is for the keyboard you will most likely be disappointed. The layout of the keyboard makes it hard to use and the keys are so small and close together that you will fat-finger them all the time. I never use the physical keyboard. I instead use the landscaped virtual keyboard which works great.

So what do you guys think of the Droid, I need to switch to Verizon and I want some advice

So what do you guys think of the Droid, I need to switch to Verizon and I want some advice

I'm on Sprint so I've never really looked at any Verizon phones. I was a Palm user but for the last year or so I've used a BlackBerry.

Now that you know where I'm coming from, I think these Android phones seem pretty interesting. They have a pretty large community with apps you can get for it and the hardware seems pretty solid. Personally, I don't care for the hardware of the Droid, but I believe there's another Android phone on Verizon, I believe it's called the Eris.

I've considered getting the Hero on Sprint, but I am biased towards Palm. I'm just not sure that I want to get the Pre, as it's not as solid a platform as I'd like it to be.

Of course, if Apple had a Sprint iPhone, all my worries would be solved.

I love it despite it having a few flaws, but that's expected on any first gen. I say, go play with it in the store and then buy it if you like it.

Should I Wait For iPhone Or Jump On The Droid?

So I have been a long time Verizon user and have always had just a basic, ordinary cell phone, which has generally suited me just fine. However, now I am eligible for an upgrade and I figure now would be a decent time to get a smart phone. Of course, being a big Apple guy, my dream phone has been the iPhone, but with all my family on Verizon and with what I hear about AT&T's service, it hasn't been able to come to fruition. With some rumors popping about with Verizon MAYBE getting the iPhone in 2010 with exclusivity running out between Apple and AT&T, would it be worth waiting into next year to see if it happens? Or with the uncertainty of that, would it just make sense to jump on the Droid bandwagon?

Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

with AT&T its about where you live, if you live in a place where AT&T gets great service, it will out do AT&T.

Many people love the droid, me im not a fan, too boxy and the touchscreen on the phone isnt as nice as the iphones

Find someone that has AT&T in the area. The next iPhone won't be out until June, but there is little evidence that would seem to point to why now Verizon would get the iPhone.
