My bro picked up the Droid X today. I must say, it's a rather appealing device. After messing around with it, I really wish the iPhone had widgets, a notification system, vibration feedback, and a larger screen. Not that any of that will ever happen, of course.

Rant/Review/Plea

Reading through this thread has truly frustrated me. I don't think I will ever understand why objectivity is seemingly unimportant to so many of you. I get it; Apple makes some absolutely fantastic products. Revolutionary products even. The first time I put my hands on an iPhone I felt like I had just stepped into the future. It was unlike anything I had ever experienced. "I'm actually holding a touch screen computer in my palm." My mind was blown. Two weeks later I paid my $150 cancellation fee to Verizon and bought my first iPhone for $400. That was 3 years ago. Since then I have bought the iPhone 3G, the iPhone 3GS, a 13" Macbook Pro and most recently the iPhone 4 (for which I stood in line from 1AM-12PM on launch day to get). And please believe I'm not some rich 16 year old who's got free reign with daddy's Amex. I grossed about 12k this past year. So understand that these words are coming from someone who appreciates the quality of product Apple puts out and shows that with a significant amount of financial support.

I got the opportunity to play with the Droid X for about 15 minutes today while my girl was waiting for her activation to process. I can't express to you all how impressed I was. From the size of the screen, to the camera, to the OS, to the feel in the hand...everything. While the display isn't the retina, it's still rather impressive given it's size. Even with it being as big as it is, one handed texting was no problem. This was really a pleasant surprise. Typing in general was very enjoyable. The keyboard is absolutely massive! Those with the pudgiest of little sausage links for fingers won't feel discriminated against. :p Texting, web searches, browsing photos, navigating menus were all done with ease without the slightest bit of lag or hesitation. The physical buttons on the bottom are implemented wonderfully. There are two that I find to be rather useful. One is a quick search button that takes you instantly to a universal/web search (with live results for the web). The other opens a menu that allows quick access to settings, wallpapers, etc.

What I was most impressed with was the multiple customizable homescreens and all of the widgets. This is where I feel like Android is actually superior to iOS, and the gap is wide in my opinion. News widgets, calendar widgets, weather widgets, photo contacts with customizable one touch to call/text/email widgets. I mean, everything. All customizable in terms of location, size and layout. I was already thoroughly impressed when I found something that absolutely put it over the top for me. Toggle widgets! If anyone has ever jailbroken their phone and installed SMBsetting (I think it's called; it's been awhile for me) then you know what I'm talking about. But it's so much sleeker in my opinion because it's naturally integrated into the OS. Wifi, bluetooth, 3G (?), and airplane mode toggle switches available on whatever homepage you want. Something so simple, but so very important.

Look, I only spent 15 minutes with the phone and it was fresh out of the box with next to nothing installed. I have no idea how the battery life will be, or how stable the OS will be or what problems there are that can only be discovered through natural use. I don't doubt there will be a few things that I simply don't like. I understand all of that. My point is this. The Droid X and more specifically the Android OS has some really novel, clever things going for it that we would be foolish to ignore. Yes, Apple revolutionized the field with the iPhone and iOS but they have hardly perfected the craft. All of you who blindly support Apple and ignore the progress that other companies are making are doing all of us a disservice. Intellectual competition is a good thing, it creates an environment that is conducive to advancement. It's what helped bring us the iPhone and what will help bring us the next great innovation.

Let's be honest, the iOS has made very little progress in terms of increased functionality and definitely customizability in the past 3 years. The OS looks essentially the same, and little can be done now that couldn't be done back then. Yes multitasking (sort of), yes push notification, yes increased stability, yes I can now put a wallpaper behind my icons. Improvements, but in essence it's the same OS, with the same look, with the same shortcomings. This speaks to how good of an OS it really is, to be king for 3+ years without any major changes is incredible when you think about it. But times are changing. The iOS is facing real competition here and Apple needs take notice. And for your own benefit, so do you. Playing with the Droid X for 15 minutes was so refreshing and so enjoyable that for the first time in 3 years I contemplated making a switch. You don't have to agree with me, and you don't have to like Android or the Droid X. But if you continue this foolishly immature blind support for Apple while completely ignoring real progress that's happening right in front of you, you are only doing yourself a disservice.

I apologize for the ridiculously lengthy post but I felt it was necessary. I hope you understand and can respect my postion.

Wow, I had no idea it was coming out. A day later and I still didnt, now ill look this up on youtube then come back and comment.

My bro got the Droid X. I must admit, it's a very nice device and has some cool features. Kinda making me want one, just getting bored of the same looking OS for 3 years now.

Just watched some videos about the X.

Why do they make these phones so huge? I like android OS but the phones they put it on are just ugly.

Wait till you try voice input for text, then try voice input for free Google Maps navigation. ;)

You mean, Apple's phone is still in second or third place, depending on whether you mean USA or world, and what month it is.

Google says over a million Android devices are coming online every week now. The biggest problem right now, is that supplies are way behind demand.

It'll be interesting later this year to see which comes out nicer: Android tablets or an HP WebOS tablet. I think the latter will be easier to use, but the former has so many more apps.

Google says a lot of things. Google said they sale 160,000 phone's a day. Do the math 160,000 x 365= 58,400,000 yeah right.

iOS is killing Android in the US and world wide in market share. In the US iOS 28% Android 9% world wide iOS has 16% were Android has less than 5%

Come back when you have the latest data...till you have that, what I linked is the best you have.

Well on the 20th Apple will release it's Q2 numbers, analyses are projecting 9.5 million iPhones sold. Like I said those numbers are incorrect I hope you don't put any stock into them. I mean I could of post something like iPhone all Android phones "from June 24-26" by selling 1.7 million iPhones!!!!!!!!!!! OMG.

I don't care if Android outsold the iPhone or vice versa but report the truth.

Are you saying Engadget pulled those numbers out of thin air?

Also, reliable market share is not calculated when 1 company posts its numbers. Some outside independent agency should be the one reporting marketshare.

You provided a set of numbers, I updated your set with the latest we know. Doesn't matter if it was not for Q2 or whatever specific date you want. When we get the next set of numbers those will include the Iphone 4 sales and also the rest of the phones in the market.

I never once heard the "iphone killer" moniker until I came to this site. Give it up already. There are more choices out there than the outdated iOS, that will never change.

It was comScore who released those numbers. It was engadget and gizmodo and other tech news websites ran with a bs story making it seem like Android out sold the iPhone. Did Android out sell the iPhone from march - may yes I won't sit here and deny that, but we go off quarter numbers not let's pick random dates to make one OS look like it's doing better than the other one. You have people out their who saw that and really think Andriod out sold the iPhone.

In a few weeks the real number will come out and well really see who sold what.

Let's be fair: If Apple was putting iOS on three dozen different devices on every carrier known to man, I'm sure they'd be selling a lot more phones.
No doubt that could happen. Unfortunately, it is all woulda, coulda, shoulda. It isn't happening right now, so it is moot.

Apple had a 15 month headstart on Android to expand to newer territories, but let Google close the gap. Apple only has to "worry" about ONE phone every year. Not hard to make a variant and have a multi-carrier release like the Samsung Galaxy S phones. You can only blame Apple for not planting its own seeds everywhere like the Android Army.

This Orwellian world isn't as perfect as it seems to be either...

First step of using an iPhone - Sync to iTunes (push repeat)

First off I'm already using both AT&T and Verizon for the sole purpose of being able to choose a few smartphones to enjoy.

Second, I detest the phrase ______ killer. I don't care what one product you fill in the blank with. I say "why compare?" The point being don't we all like to have choices? I know I do. Also I welcome competition.

Now to the Android platform & the Droid X: as most of you know Android is a young OS & still very much in the development stages. Also let's remember that when reviewed, even by a well known blog or review site, it's still nothing more than a review by one person that has their own set of preferences. So I take that into consideration. After all it's how it works for me that matters.

Personally, I've been a long time Apple customer & love my Apple products. If you've noticed in my posts I dislike arrogance, greed, and having some CEO think he knows what's best for all of us. Yet, let's not confuse that with what I find as excellent tech gear. I love my iPhone... Period. Is it perfect? No. Is any smartphone perfect? No. So... I will always speak out about faults and I will remain loyal within reason.

To the Droid X: excellent effort on Motorola's part. Very good build quality, excellent tactile sensation & feedback, very fast. A very nice display that in my opinion is the new sweet spot for mobile web access. Since that is _my_ number one priority, I find both my iPhone 4 & Droid X winners. The iP4 for it's superb retina resolution, & the Droid X for size. As far as Android 2.1, not bad at all, Froyo 2.2 will be my next upgrade on the X, as I'm already running it on an unlocked & rooted HTC Desire I got directly from Hong Kong. In mere months I will be running "Gingerbread 3.0" and _that version_ is a quantum leap for Android. One which will change many peoples mind about Android.

Viva Le Choice!

I agree. iOS is missing some important features. Custom Ringtone for new text messages anyone?
