In Europe (where I live) 6 months ago you would only find one or two android phones in the phone stores. Now there's 4 or 5 on offer from each operator. With greater availability there are more and more people now buying android who would never have dreamed of (or heard of android) six months ago. My bet is that in 6 months time those numbers quoted by engadget will be very very different.

re "iphone killer". There's no such thing. Die hard apple fans will always go for an iphone whether or not its better or inferior to the competition. Same with Android fans. Its the gang in the middle that will make the difference in the future. People who are not fanboys of either but are just looking for an upgrade and are thinking of a smartphone. That's where the major market share is.

Google says a lot of things. Google said they sale 160,000 phone's a day. Do the math 160,000 x 365= 58,400,000 yeah right.

iOS is killing Android in the US and world wide in market share. In the US iOS 28% Android 9% world wide iOS has 16% were Android has less than 5%

Reading through this thread has truly frustrated me.

I succumbed to the siren song of verizon and droid x

I sold my Nexus One and bought a Droid X. I put my name on a list of a couple of VZW stores and I'm glad I did because for some wacky reasons moto/verizon only had limited quantities - extremely limited quantities, like between 3 - 5 phones per store.

Anyways I picked mine up yesterday and played with it. Here's some brief thoughts on it.

Screen: Gorgeous, not AMOLED gorgeous that my N1 had but much more readible, and much much easier to type on. Probably on par if not better then the iPhone.

Dimensions: Some people chide the size as being ungainly large, and that cannot be further from the truth. Its only a scosh wider then
IP4 dimensions 2.3 x 4.5 x .37 (inches)
DX dimensions 2.6 x 5.0 x .4 (inches)
As you can see its only .3 inches wider but yet I'm getting a 4.3 inch screen. Its quite pocketable in both my pants and shirt pocket.

CPU: Much faster then the N1 and the GPU is much more improved and while its still on elcair, I'm looking forward to a much faster handeld once 2.2 arrives for it and uses the JIT to really boost performance.

Battery: I only had a 60% charge on the puppy when getting it, and was nearly depleted this morning around 7:30am. I was using it extensively yesterday from 11:00am through out the day and night. While the battery has not been "calibrated"/broken in quite yet, I found it surprisingly good. I found I needed three charging cycles on my Nexus to maximum battery life so I expect to see improvements on what is already good battery life.

UI: Improved over the stock android OS but does not employ such a heavy handedness that HTC devices have with SenseUI. MotoBlur offers a nice balance.

Overall its a winner and its a great phone

Remember when the Moto Razr was the king? man those were the days.

Wow I loved that phone! Me & my dad both had the silver one, and my mum had the gold dolce & gabbana edition, which is still in a cupboard somewhere! Was a fine phone :)

As for the Droid X. I don't know...it's just been released today and imo it looks outdated compared to the iPhone 4! I don't like how big it is but I'm sure it's a fine phone but nothing imo can't touch the iPhone. However the closer the competition get to the iPhone the better, because the iPhone will just be made even better :) as demonstrated by the iPhone 4. retina display, front facing camera, better camera w/flash, better memory, processor, gyro etc, plus the stainless steel band antenna gives it a new look, even if it does have some controversy relating to attenuation issues :)

call me what you will but i'd stick to the iphone till its last day. maybe even if apple didn't make it.

No doubt that could happen. Unfortunately, it is all woulda, coulda, shoulda. It isn't happening right now, so it is moot.

Apple had a 15 month headstart on Android to expand to newer territories, but let Google close the gap. Apple only has to "worry" about ONE phone every year. Not hard to make a variant and have a multi-carrier release like the Samsung Galaxy S phones. You can only blame Apple for not planting its own seeds everywhere like the Android Army.

Oh, I've got nothing against Android. I think it's quite cool. I just feel like at the same time people who trumpet iPhone killers and how Android is toppling iOS are trying to imply that Apple is 'losing' when the only thing they're bringing into the battle is a single, annually updated model. It takes Google with an army of third-party designers to release a bimonthly torrent of phones to keep up. More power to them, but no single Android phone is going to be an iPhone killer, because no single Android phone is selling nearly as many units, or netting nearly as much revenue.

I do think it's a fire under Apple's foot, which should be good for all of us, but this whole trumpeting of market share over user experience (or, hell, even profitability) just reeks of decades of Windows vs. MacOS arguments. It's unseemly. People are arguing from different bases ("more freedom = better!" "user experience = better!" "my better's better than your better!") without even stopping to notice.

Too bad like all the other Verizon phones they are all backordered on the HTC Incredible Droid phone and Motorola Droid X.

By the time they start shipping the incredible Android OS will be at 5.0

They were getting crappy screens from Samsung, now they re-engineered the whole thing and they are getting their screens from Sony, so good luck.

It wasn't re-engineered, it was a component swap. They moved to LCD because of supply constraints on Samsung's OLED screens, not because of the quality - the whole point was to be able to supply more phones faster than they would have otherwise.

Funny the OLED version is $199 so now they went to LCD why are they still charging $199, seems to be a different phone now, kind of like Apple deciding to get rid of their current screen and go back to the 3GS screen, not worth the money for the new phone without that specific screen.

I just don't think I could go back to a phone with a screen less than 300 ppi. :D I looked at my sister's iPod touch today, and just trying to read text on the thing annoyed me. Droid X has a bigger screen than the iPhone 4, but a lower resolution, so... not interested.

And question: The Gizmodo review said the Droid X has 24GB of storage. Is that 24GB flash memory, or is it 8GB plus up to 16GB SD cards? Because 24GB seems really random.

That one.

Verizon had a promo yesterday, if you buy the Droid X, they'll sell you a 32GB card for $100. But for some people, they actually sold them at $50.

It's a very high quality LCD from what I'm reading. HTC's own statement on the matter is that there is "'no discernible difference between the displays' and they even expect the change to fly under the radar." (DroidLife)

I'd wait to see reviews, but I doubt it'll be night and day.

I was hearing really great things but I watched a few videos on YT and I'm honestly not really impressed when using iP4 as a mental comparison marker. I already know I'd make wonderful use out of FaceTime and the display quality looks markedly not as good as the "retina" display on the iP4.

Hum, either way, it's still a nice phone. I think I'd be for the EVO over this one though.

Another POS Android phone. Give it a month and nobody will even remember. They'll say, "It's good, but no iPhone.. but the next Android phone is the iPhone killer for sure!"

Same BS every time. The only thing to kill an iPhone is a new iPhone. End of story.

Everything about the droid x is better than the iphone, except for the screen dpi. But who the heck NEEDS 326 dpi. The droid x has 230 dpi and you have to look under a magnifying glass to see the pixels. The CPU/GPU in the droid x are much faster than the A4.

The only way to kill the iphone is to kill the apple fanboys. You fanboys will stand in line or preorder anything jobs tells you is "magical". He could take a dump in a box, mark it iPoop and it would sell two million units in 24 hours.

People say the same thing about Michael Jordan. It's funny how this works because his shoe line is the best selling line of all time IMO.

Great post. Thanks! Very well expressed.

Very good post. It is foolish to turn a blind eye to what is out there. The Droid X looks great and I hope it keeps Apple on their toes.

Thank you for the compliments. I just feel like we all should feel a duty to be fair-minded, objective critical thinkers; to take pride in that. Similarly to you Boss, that's the whole reason I joined this forum. Back then it seemed like the majority of posters had something of real quality and substance to say, whether it was in support of Apple or not. Over the past couple years, I've sadly noticed a real degradation in the overall quality of posting on these forums. It seems like the norm nowadays to have to sift through pages of fanatic, "fanboyistic" posting to find those real jewels that make you nod your head in agreement. I don't mean to sound like the bitter old man caught up in nostalgia and the "good ol' days". Lol I'm only 25! :) It's just been rough to witness. I'm sure some of you understand what I mean.

To the Droid X: A very nice display that in my opinion is the new sweet spot for mobile web access. Since that is _my_ number one priority, I find both my iPhone 4 & Droid X winners.

Viva Le Choice!

I absolutely agree about the sweet spot. Looking at it in videos really doesn't do it justice. It looks too big to handle; at least it did to me. But I urge all of you who haven't actually held one in your hands yet to do so. The extra screen real estate is great for both browsing and watching videos and it doesn't at all feel cumbersome. It feels just right to be honest. I think the size is nearly perfect.

People are arguing from different bases ("more freedom = better!" "user experience = better!" "my better's better than your better!") without even stopping to notice.

Excellent, excellent point. People seem to think that the different approaches are mutually exclusive. Why? I think it's a lot of our hopes that the great minds in all of these companies will learn from what the competition is doing well and incorporate that into their own products. I feel like everyone else has learned a great deal from Apple and the iPhone, it shows in their attempts to recreate many of the iPhone's original novelties that Apple pulled off so well (absolutely responsive touch functionality, cover flow style presentations of media, true mobile browsing, etc., etc.). But as I said earlier, change is upon us. These companies are catching up to, and in some respects actually surpassing what the iPhone has to offer. Evolution is inevitable, in technology and in life. The queen can always learn something from the peasant. With how fast life moves in our current society, she better learn because the possibility of losing her throne is ever present.

Let's be fair: If Apple was putting iOS on three dozen different devices on every carrier known to man, I'm sure they'd be selling a lot more phones.
