WSJ stuff

It seems like the reporter from the WSJ, Yuri Iwatari Kane, has been a reliable source for "leaked" Apple info. Right now, I would go with the WSJ story about a Verizon Iphone announcement in the fall, as the most "reliable" rumor.

you know how long these analyst have been saying a verizon iphone will be here soon and every year they are wrong.... your going to be waiting for a long time.. Dont believe anything untill apple or verizon say it..also Didnt a spokes person for verizon say they are NOT getting the iphone in the near future.. so i dont know why you think fall.... just switch to ATT.. my service is great 5 bars all the time

Maybe it will eventually happen, maybe it won't, but we've seen these threads/rumors float around ever since the iPhone was introduced.

Given that AT&T increased the ETF and moved many customer's upgrade date, I'd say that the day's of AT&T's exclusive on the iPhone are numbered, but again that's just conjecture.

But Verizon increased their etf first, back in November, saying that people were reselling the subsidized phones.

I just don't think ATT's "me-too" rate increase is the final piece of the iphone-on-verizon puzzle that everyone is looking for.

The eligibility increase..eh..maybe. Given the number of people who complained last year, I wonder if ATT just wanted to get everyone to move to the higher etf and the lower end data plan for new customers (= reduced liability and increase for extra charges).

iphone 4 on verizon in sept?

do you think thats why att doubled their termination fees a month before the release of the new iphone? and now are waiting for us to all be in contracts with them again, while verizon gets the 64gb white iphone 4 lol?

Believe me I HATE to feed the Verizon trolls but it does seem that it could be possible according to a recent article by engadget (recent as in, I checked it on my Twitter this morning). Evidentally a company is making CDMA version of the iPhone. I don't believe this 100% but it's definately something to go check out over at their site.

Again I am not convinced that Verizon will get it.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

Verizon will get the iPhone at some point, however, it won't be this year. So my answer is no, this is not the reason why AT&T raised their ETF. ;)

They better not get it anytime soon, I just dumped them for the iPhone 4.

But they've really been hammering the Android lately, highly doubt they'll get it anytime soon. They're just not ready...

Maybe they should have signed the iPhone back when it was first proposed to them...what a blunder.

DigiTimes reports that Taiwanese manufacture is set to deliver a CDMA version of iPhone 4, which would be compatible with Verizon's network in the United States, to Apple in the fourth quarter of this year.

Pegatron will also start shipping a CDMA version of the iPhone 4 to Apple in the fourth quarter and is currently using its plants in Shanghai, China to produce the products, the sources noted. The company is also working on gaining orders for MacBooks and iPads from Apple, added the sources.

Back in February, DigiTimes was the first to report that Pegatron would join existing Apple partner Foxconn for production of iPhone 4. The following month, The Wall Street Journal's sources added some more clarity to the situation by noting that Foxconn would manufacture the GSM iPhone 4 based on the same cellular technology as previous models, while Pegatron would be responsible for the new CDMA version.

Since I pre-ordered but really would rather be on Verizon, they will make it available just to spite me.

Really no one knows what Steve Jobs and Apple will do, it could be possible but who knows. As far as their ETF fees, VZ has been charging $350 for the last 2-3 months, so AT&T matched it, and I wouldn't be surprised if VZ tiers their data although they do not have a single product or multiple products that use as much data as the iPhone, however once they do get it, I am sure that will all change.

Agreed, the ETF really points to nothing more than bringing it in line with the higher subsidy offered on the iPhone.

Verizon actually announced their intentions to offer tiered data with the launch of 4G. AT&T just beat them to the punch in implementing a plan.

However, I would argue that A) every Droid has the ability and probably does use as much data as the iPhone. B) Verizon has a much larger customer base using data cards than AT&T.

Perhaps you didn't see this:

Edit: If a Verizon iPhone is coming, it won't be in September, closer to the holidays would be my guess...IF it came this year at all. But for that to happen it would mean 2 REALLY BIG things happened:

1) The exclusivity contract did get ammended or one of the parties executed an exit clause
2) The big egos and Verizon and Apple finally came to an agreement

This is why I still won't believe it until I hear an official announcement. The Engadget rumor is nice and all, but its a repeat of the same rumor...nothing new.

It makes ZERO sense for Apple to invest in CDMA phones for the US, as Verizon is going to phase out that network in favor of the faster LTE sometime in the next two years.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I read somewhere that the CDMA phones were for the Chinese market...where there's no plans for a next-gen network anytime soon.

Also, you can't do "voice and data" at the same time on CDMA networks, something that Apple and AT&T have based their iPhone ad campaigns around. It'd be tough to backtrack on that if the iPhone goes to Verizon.

My bet? That AT&T's exclusive deal with Apple expires in two years, which should be close to the time that Sprint's 4G and Verizon's LTE network are fully rolled out.

Bottom line - CDMA is a dying technology. And Apple has proven time and time again that they pull the plug on dying technologies (see floppy disc drives, flash, even CD drives).

That exact rumor (naming Pegatron even) has come up numerous times before.

I doubt Apple will be dumb enough to get everyone locked into ATT contracts and then announce a Verizon version soon after. They don't want to get their fanbase upset at them. The year it goes multi carrier in the US, the announcement will be at the same time as the new iPhone, even if the release of the phone on the new carrier(s) isn't the same time as the ATT version.

Not true, it will be active for the next 10 years. BTW, remember a little thing called the iPhone....w/ Edge data? And the LTE network won't be fully built out, legacy support will be necessary on both CDMA and GSM networks.

Another reason why a CDMA iPhone would be profitable. But yeah, that does mean it could be just for China and not for Verizon.

It does now. Go lookup SVDO.

CDMA is no more a dying technology than the current GSM standards. Wireless technologies, just like the examples you gave, are always evolving. All carriers are constantly moving toward the newer standard. And Apple has proven more than once that they are not on the bleeding edge of technology standards. 3G, Blue-Ray, etc...

ATT is giving a lot of extra people an early upgrade option. That could lock a ton of customers into two year contracts, making them less likely to jump later this year.

+1

I think they would do exactly this to help keep the peace with their current partner AT&T. They won't rock that boat too much as it brings in too much money. Also, if Verizon weren't ready to go by WWDC, Apple wasn't going to hurt iPhone 4 sales by announcing a distant phone release.

That's interesting ... thx for posting it.

Having been in IT for a while, I recall companies giving their users AT&T phones, but since AT&T was still on Edge, they would buy Sprint or Verizon data cards. This is how Sprint and Verizon still handle more data than AT&T, all of those data cards they sold while AT&T still working on rolling out 3G...a lot of the companies never switched over.
