People cry about wanting to have the iPhone on Verizon, but people don't get that Verizon users only use around 40% (If I remember correctly) of data that AT&T users use. If Verizon had millions upon millions of iPhone on their network it would be the greatest either.

By the way I like in Dallas TX and my 3G service is GREAT I rarely have a dropped call!

The vast majority of the world uses the same standards (GSM) as does AT&T and Tmobile in the US.
Verizon and Sprint uses CDMA for their 3G which only works on their networks, so the phones are hardware locked to their respective networks.
Sprint has chosen a proprietary standard for 4G (which is based on wimax). Verizon has chosen LTE for their 3G, but it's not backwards compatible with their 3G network. AT&T and Tmobile can expand their 4G network with 4G hardware and it's backwards compatible. Verizon, until they expand their 4G network nationwide will either have a 4G only phone (which won't work on their 3G network) or a dual chip phone.

Wrong. LTE is not natively backwards compatible with anything. It's new.

Is it really that big a deal that Verizon has a CDMA network and AT&T has GSM?

Why the hell is this such a big issue? Why the **** doesn't Apple just put in a radio that picks up CDMA cellular frequencies? How hard could that be with all the crappy phones that are on Verizon?

They always mention that Verizon is CDMA and iPhone is not compatible with it like it's such a huge ****ing deal. Just change the goddamned radio and your problem is solved.

Edit: I don't give a care about Verizon or anything but I just want to know why articles are always bitching about how this is such a big issue.

I heard verizon is going to change to GSM when I went to get a microcell at the AT&T store....basically I talked to a manager for 25 mins and that is what came up in conversation.

who knows what the future will hold....................................

It's not a technical issue, but a business decision to produce a GSM phone, it would be fairly easy for apple to bang out a CDMA based phone. They choose for reasons beyond me, to stick with AT&T as an exclusive partners. Perhaps its because of the boatload of money AT&T is giving them. Perhaps it gives apple more control, which ultimately they like.

In the end, Verizon doesn't have the iPhone because apple doesn't want too, simple as that.

Actually didn't Apple go to Verizon first and Verizon told them to f-off?

U can't be just shove things randomly in a place. Plus gsm is way better.

ok im new here, but just to let you know, no gsm is not better than cdma lol. let me explain why.

1) cdma cell towers have more capacity than gsm towers, allowing for more people to connect in one area, which is cause for less errors and no dropped calls

2) cdma technology has smoother handovers (when you are connected via one tower and move into another area, are connected to another) than gsm (which if it handover to another tower, will drop your call)

3)cdma is the more expensive technology, meaning that verizon (and no i dont have verizon, in fact i hate them) has invested a lot more money in their network than AT&T, especially given the range of coverage that they boast across the US

there are a lot of other technical specs that i won't get in to.
im an electrical engineer, and specialized in networks and communications, so it makes me laugh when i see people say things like gsm is better than cdma, because its definitely not

People "bitching" about this assume Verizon wants the iPhone. By "want" I mean, will accept all of Apple's terms regarding control like ATT does. That was not the case originally when Jobs approached Verizon. Verizon showed Jobs the front door...or maybe the back. Either way they said "get outta here."

Most CDMA phones are crappy, you are correct. Why? Because Verizon and Sprint dictate to manufacturers what features go in them and which must not be included. Apple will not cede that control.

The "love" for Verizon is mostly romantic. It's the grass on the other side. If Verizon ever got the iPhone people would be "bitching" about them too in no time. I have Verizon for my home and DSL. They are significantly less than fantastic as some would have you believe.

Yeah their billing department is a mess at least for the FiOS service anyway.

Nothing that harsh. Verizon simply didn't express much interest. And who can blame them:

Consider that when they were approached in 2005, it was just an idea. The iPhone itself wouldn't exist for another half a year or more.

The ROKR iTunes phone introduced by Jobs as one of his "one more thing" surprises, had pretty much bombed, in part due to Apple's insistence on crippling its capacity. Even though that wasn't a direct Apple product, it couldn't have inspired confidence in Apple's phone ideas.

Verizon has said that they still had nothing against the idea, but couldn't agree on terms.

For instance, Apple wouldn't let Verizon's sales partners such as Best Buy carry the device. (Ironically, nowadays even Walmart and Radio Shack do.)

Apple wanted to control all warranty decisions. Verizon likes to offer insurance. (This seems to be changing now at ATT.)

Apple didn't want to allow customer subsidies. (Again, that changed later.)

Plus all Verizon smartphones at the time had 3G and GPS. Apple ended up going cheap with EDGE and no GPS at first.

All in all, it must not have sounded like much of a deal. Even AT&T, who had known about the idea before Verizon, didn't sign a contract with Apple for another year after Verizon was first approached.

You must be some fine engineer if you think that GSM isn't capable of handing off to another tower without dropping a call

For some of the reasons listed in the above posts and the fact that they keep advertising anti-iPhone ads ("Droid does," for example), I think secretly Verizon would never want the iPhone and would never want to have to come out and say that they don't want it (just like they didn't want it when it was first offered to them), but loves the free publicity from those saying Verizon would solve all the network issues with the iPhone.

wow, way to not read the whole post before you respond. when did i say its not capable? i said that its not as smooth, and therefore results in more dropped calls

Wrong. Verizon and Sprint both handle more data than AT&T.

Not sure where in Dallas you're using your phone...Plano or Frisco? I was sitting on the side of I-35 & NW Hwy w/ a flat trying to get assistance since my jack was missing and had a call drop just last week. Later I was in my neighborhood (Uptown) talking to a buddy about dinner....dropped call. I'll admit it's not as bad as it was 2 years ago, but as a former Verizon user, my Verizon service in Dallas was better. I had 3-4 dropped calls a year. I get that many in a week w/ AT&T.

It's not an issue. Apple can easily build a CDMA iPhone. People don't get that. This is not what is holding Apple back. There are only 2 reasons are not getting an iPhone right now:

1) Exclusivity contract with AT&T. It was originally 5 years. Unless it has been amended or there was some exit clause that's been executed by one of the parties, Apple can't go to Verizon yet.

2) Corporate cultures. Verizon wants to modify and brand every device. They didn't modify the Droid, but they still branded it. Apple won't put up with this. Until Verizon and Apple can see past their differences, we won't see a Verizon iPhone. I have hopes this will eventually happen.

I heard verizon is going to change to GSM when I went to get a microcell at the AT&T store....basically I talked to a manager for 25 mins and that is what came up in conversation.

Verizon is not going to GSM. Not in the sense that you're thinking. With the new 700 MHz spectrum and the rules associated, and the fact that LTE is the best option out there for 4G, Verizon has decided to go with LTE for their 4G technology on the 700MHz spectrum. This technology is a subset of UMTS and has been chosen by the GSMA as their new standard as well. CDMA will still be available on the higher spectrums for the next 10 years. So you could say Verizon is going GSM, but I wouldn't characterize it that way. But maybe I'm just being nit-picky.

The "love" for Verizon is not romantic. It's from direct experience and use.

Verizon Still Wants the iPhone (Despite those Droid Ads)

You said, if it hands over to another tower, it will drop your call. You didn't say sometimes. You implied that GSM is not capable of handing off to another tower.

I have to agree, badly worded. But CDMA tech is better than the original GSM technologies. What he's failing to mention is that the GSMA adopted W-CDMA which has greatly improved AT&Ts GSM network. But it still needs more work.

Worthless Verizon Iphone rumors

I am astounded by the amount of bulls.... that is floating around on the internet about Verizon Iphone. No one knows anything and writers are floating stories that they just make up or regurgitate from 2 months ago. I am one of the pathetic 10-20 million Verizon customers who would switch to an Iphone right now if it was available. It would be nice if there were any credible sources. Google search for Verizon Iphone rumors is the worst. Engadget seems to be the most current, but they are just guessing like everyone else.

Everything is only a rumor. Nothing has been confirmed.
