Apple can announce to never release iPhone on Verizon network and some of you will still believe it to be some sort of "code" that Verizon will get it soon.

Or they want as many people on the new capped plans before they know what's happening :D

nope, you don't have to change to a capped plan when you upgrade, so that's not it.

I've been wondering, what is AT&T's motivation for upgrading everyone that has a 2010 upgrade date? That's much more aggressive than in the past.

Apple can announce to never release iPhone on Verizon network and some of you will still believe it to be some sort of "code" that Verizon will get it soon.

See, if Apple actually did that, a ton of Verizon customers would give up the wait and switch. More sales for both Apple & AT&T.

SO....why don't they announce it's not coming to Verizon?

i think AT&T's motivation is to keep people happy and have them stick on their network, also keep apple happy

i guess they where last year too since that happened then too. i mean do people just keep pushing the rumor back farther and farther? o wait yes. cause they cant get over it.

What is their big motivation to keep the customers happy? Why go to such extremes?

They have a contract w/ Apple, why do they have to go out of their way to keep them happy?

Sorry, but these generic explanations just don't ring true to me. They don't seem typical of a revenue driven business with little competition. Unless they really see Android as a threat...and I just don't think thats it either.

I agree with the OP to a certain extent... more and more signs are pointing to end of AT&T exclusivity sooner rather than later. Does it mean the iPhone on Verizon? Maybe, maybe not. Maybe it's still undetermined. It could be simply that exclusivity is ending but AT&T doesn't know what will happen next, and they are just covering their asses. Heck, Apple may still be in negotiations with Verizon and nothing is final. Those negotiations will be tough, you can bet on that.

So my advice continues to be "it could happen, but don't hold your breath".

well they do have a contract with apple, if they want to extend the contract in the future, i am pretty sure they want to keep apple happy

I am not sure if I see that. Apple has been very scheduled with their iPhone announcements. With that being said, the next thing mentioned for the iPhone is next June. They usually do not release such important information when other keynotes are going on (i.e. we did not hear about MobileMe, iTunes cloud, Apple TV, etc. today).

Steve-O did say that Atat claims things will get better before they get worse.. He also said things should clear up by the end of summer.

Atat is implementing their new network all over. So maybe all the dropped calls are a switch-over thing?

I know that it wasn't announced today, but should I still hold out? I'm on Verizon now and on a month to month postpaid account because my contract is up. Should I stay with Verizon or jump ship to AT&T?

If you want an iPhone, the only US ship sailing with that product on board is AT&T. Everything else is simply speculation. You can read the tea leaves, look to the stars, observe meteor showers, whatever you want to do, but from what we can rationally infer, Verizon's not getting the iPhone anytime soon...

this is definitely a ploy to lock people in early to additional years, regardless of what other carriers are getting the phone in hte future the day is coming soon, so by moving up the upgrade date, they can lock in people to additional years before any news gets out and they potentially lose customers, good business move, cost them nothing to do it and they get another year of guaranteed revenue

Agreed...despite whatever the reasoning behind it, AT&T is trying to lock more users down for the next 2 years.

where are all The Verizon "fanboys"? I'm pretty sure they're all in the closet crying about now....

No, I've said all along it wouldn't happen today.

The fact that there are fanboys at all for cell phone providers, bet it Verizon, AT&T, Cricket, will never cease to amaze me.

While I respond to the fanboy comments, I'm not a fanboy. I just want to use the phone I enjoy using on the carrier that provides the best service in my area.

Seems to me like its the case. Why should AT&T otherwise care whether people are eligible for an upgrade... they have to be able to make back their subsidy on these things.

I came from verizon to att for the 3GS. I was thinking about using another family members' upgrade to get an iPhone 4. Seeing as how my 3GS will do multitasking, and how the iPhone 4 doesn't have HSPA+ and doesn't increase storage, I don't know if its worth extending my lock-in with AT&T.

Yeah, whoever made the comment that this cost AT&T nothing is an idiot. It doesn't take a genius to figure out the economics on this one. All these early upgrades is costing AT&T quite a bit. Although it's true that the ARPU for iPhone customers is higher, so it's more affordable that early upgrading non-iPhone customers.

You guys are a little bit ... nuts :) Theres nothing wrong with having more carrier options available to us customers. If you are happy with AT&T, thats great for you, but dont be a dips*** fanboy and recognize that AT&T isn't great for everyone and what people are asking for is more of an option while staying with Apple instead of going with Android or BB.

+1

The vast majority of the world uses the same standards (GSM) as does AT&T and Tmobile in the US.
Verizon and Sprint uses CDMA for their 3G which only works on their networks, so the phones are hardware locked to their respective networks.
Sprint has chosen a proprietary standard for 4G (which is based on wimax). Verizon has chosen LTE for their 3G, but it's not backwards compatible with their 3G network. AT&T and Tmobile can expand their 4G network with 4G hardware and it's backwards compatible. Verizon, until they expand their 4G network nationwide will either have a 4G only phone (which won't work on their 3G network) or a dual chip phone.

LTE isn't backward compatible on AT&T either. An LTE iPhone for AT&T would have to be a chip that supports their previous GSM standards as well.

Remember also, it's not just for iPhone users. All users who have upgrade eligibility will be allowed to upgrade.

I must have missed this. Can you show me a statement from AT&T on this? All I've seen are iPhone customer being bumped up so far.

Don't expect an iPhone with Verizon this year. If it was going to happen, it would have been announced today.

If it were a fall release as has been speculated (and I'm not saying it will be) it wouldn't be announced today.

I don’t think most have any problems with V getting the iPhone; it’s mostly their whining and saying how bad AT&T is day after day after day that gets irritating.

You don't think the smug smart a** responses we get from the AT&T fanboys are annoying?

Sky high hopes crushed

I'm on the road for business, and was unable to get to a spot to watch Uncle Steve do the keynote. Saw a Verizon kiosk, though, so I swung by to see if there was news. The keynote would have just wrapped up, so if there was something exciting about Verizon, well...figured this was the place to find out.

The guy told me "Absolutely, it's going to Verizon; there's a press conference on right now about it," as he stepped to his laptop to pull it up. I felt like cheering in glee, ready to celebrate....right up until he added "And Sprint is getting it too!"

Uhhhhh...huh?

Needless to say, the lad wasn't able to locate the mystical magical press conference.

Damn. Back in the car, on down the highway, heartbroken. :::sigh:::

Ive been a Verizon user since Prime Co days and I will always be a Verizon subscriber but Im done. Im pre-ordering my iPhone 4 and will be porting my primary line out. Im sick of waiting and Im sick of Verizon not caring what is subscribers want. My other 3 lines will stay but I know AT&T has really improved its network in Florida so I should be fine. This phone is just too sick to pass up. It is EVERYTHING I ever wanted in the iPhone since I bought the 2G on launch day.

^^^ This.

Again, none of know WHY, but AT&T are spending real dollars and are looking for lock-in. They're making it easy to upgrade (bumping up dates) and also making it harder to leave (bigger ETFs).

I'm not sure a lot of people who read these boards have really deep financial understandings of what's going on around them... ARPU... must mean "Auxiliary Reserve Power Unit," right? :p

It isn't backward compatible on AT&T either. An LTE iPhone for AT&T would have to be a chip that supports their previous GSM standards as well.

Correct. Why people keep on about this, I'll never know - and they won't either. Blissfully ignorant, I suppose. Everyone's a telecom engineer...

Right.

Again, I'm not saying I know anything, but AT&T are acting like they're going to lose exclusivity, and fairly soon. Perhaps an agreement was reached to allow AT&T a month's head start - or even three - on Verizon.

Who knows? But AT&T's actions tell me something's up.

I have but one reason to hold out hope: AT&T needs Apple FAR more than Apple needs AT&T. Given their relationship and reputations, it would actually surprise me if the original contract lasted all 5 years.

What's the big deal with verizon?

Okay, first off, I'm not bashing anyone begging for the iPhone to come to Verizon... I'm simply curious about the matter. Now, I wholly understand that Verizon has more 3G coverage in the U.S., and that there are less dropped calls. Is that all they offer? And, with these new data plans from at&t, isn't it cheaper now to be with at&t? I haven't looked too much into this, but if I remember correctly, for Verizon smartphones you have to pay a $29.99 data fee, where with at&t it can be as low as $15 a month. Wouldn't this be a draw to at&t? (Yes, I am aware that these are CAPPED data plans).

I don't know... I mean, I personally have not been loving at&t having switched FROM verizon, but living in a 3G covered area, and now having a cheaper data plan, I don't see what I'm missing by not being Verizon.

Plus, and yes this is silly, I much prefer the short "AT&T" on the top of my iPhone than seeing "Verizon" =P
