I own three Android devices currently (for work purposes). the nexus, EVO, and incredible. I can easily state that the iPhone 4 camera shoots better still pictures and video compared to all three of those devices. The difference is especially clear in shooting videos. Its no contest.

no one cares whether 3 outdated android phones shoot better. What we care is the fact that apple just got stomped on by Samsung and Google with the new Galaxy S.

First off, Apple designed the chip. It's their own custom silicon. It's only being manufactured by Samsung.

Intrinsity designed the chip before Apple acquired them. Samsung and Intrinsity announced the 1Ghz Hummingbird processor last July. The core of the A4 and Hummingbird are identical with the difference being the rest of the parts of the SoC.

ArsTechnica said:
As for what Intrinsity brought to Apple that PA Semi couldn't, the answer is a CPU core. Samsung and Intrinsity announced the Hummingbird core in the summer of 2009, and this is almost certainly the core on which Apple's A4 is based. Hummingbird is a ground-up, cycle-accurate, high-performance remake of ARM's Cortex A8 architecture, done by Intrinsity and Samsung in order to get the A8's clockspeed comfortably up to 1GHz on a 45nm process. The following description from the PR is fairly clear in laying out what Intrinsity did with Hummingbird:

Hey Sledutah! I live in west Jordan... Where do you have most of your issues? I was in tooele(stansbury park) yesterday, & I couldn't make the bars drop!! At my house, i hold it the "wrong way" n it drops to nothing... But out there, The signal was really strong I guess! ;) time to move!! Haha

I live in Centerville, I can drop the signal from 5 to 1 bars but still have connectivity (but slow). I was out by the airport the other day, I had No service at all, my wife had 5 bars on her crackberry with T-Mobile. Yesterday in Layton I only had 4 bars and could drop it 0 (but had service) with no data transfer and couldn't make a call.
The most frustrating is the proximity sensor. I hate to even talk to anybody because I know I'm going to mute/speakerphone/facetime/dial someone else or hang up while I'm talking to them.

doubt it very much. Every review I have seen says otherwise.

Fact of that matter is that Android devices carry all, if not more the power of the I4.

Since Google believes in the Wild West Theory, their marketplace will continue to be splintered and unorganized. If Google demanded manufactures use a standard chipset for a low end and high end device (One chipset per year), they could clean Apples clock in the US because of the carrier restriction alone. Doing this would give developers a common base for their Apps. I don't think such restrictions would be out of the question for manufactures because they get the software for free.

I love Apple, but hate ATT. How many time have we heard this? I am in the boat right now where I need a new phone but cant buy one. I have a broken Palm Pre with Sprint that I refuse to pay the insurance company more for than my ETF would cost. I had an HTC Evo for two days before it broke. HTC is having serious defect rates with the Evo. I cant get a replacement Evo because they are out of stock in stores and online. However, I would not stick with the Evo anyways because the Samsung Epic looks to be the go to phone for Sprint.

Since I could not get an Evo replacement, I decided to bite the bullet and come back to the iPhone. I had the 2g and 3g on launch day, but got tired of ATT and their monthly A$$ raping. However, switching to Sprint only gained me a lesser bill, and better service. I had the Palm Pre, and while Multitasking was good, the damn thing was too slow. If I over clocked it, the battery drained faster than any phone I have ever owned. (And thats a lot!)

I ordered my phones from ATT and was told to wait for a confirmation email in 48 hours that never came. ATT said they got my email wrong and to wait another 48 hours and I should receive my email. Guess what... never came. I called again and the order was totally cancelled. So, I ordered them again and after two day got my confirmation email. I did what was requested and then two days later received a call that they needed more information about the port. I called and gave them that information and was told they would ship the next day. Two more days later I called to check the status of my order and guess what.... BACKORDERED!

Unfrickenbelieveable! Why is Apple even doing business with these clowns? They offered no apologies and acted like they were doing me a favor by selling me iphones! Are they out of their mind?

So at this point, No I4, No EVO and the Epic is not out yet.

BTW, Verizon can EAD too. They are the worst nickel and dime company of them all. If Apple lands with them next, god only knows how much higher their plans will go. Really Verizon? 2100 minutes is the largest family plan you have until you sting me for 50 per line for unlimited I don't need?

Bah.. Had to get that one out.

Anyways, I4 is the cleanest of all devices currently(Slightly). Only hampered by ATT, Signal Issues, Proximity issues and for me.. glass paranoia. (I understand SI and PIs are subjective and can be hopefully remedied by software fixes)

Notifications, Flash, Multi-Desktops, Widgets and Voice to TXT are huge pluses for Android. Hampered by poor email client.

And one more thing about this whole app craze. If its not a 3d game, don't you find using the browser just as efficient as an app? Most of the main sites, like eBay and mobile banking have everything simplified for smart phones anyways. Some of those apps were needed before the iphone taught the internet a lesson. But now, i almost find them annoying. I would feel the same way running any of these phones now.

Thanks for letting me vent.

LG make the panels for the iP4 not Samsung.

And I am very glad that Apple didn't go with AMOLED or Super AMOLED for that matter.

And the reason is two words; Pentile Matrix.;)

Besides which, I have owned many Samsung phones and they have had minimal support.

Nothing like Apple supporting their phones for three years.

Dude, you cannot compare the two. Apple develops the software for their phones and picks hardware to work best with it. Samsung Android devices run Googles OS. They do add Touch Wiz, but thats about it.

I've used android devices before and if i was going to make android my main smartphone platform to use. I wouldn't get one from samsung They have a pretty bad track record of rolling out new Android Versions to phones.

Pretty much i would be suprised if the Galaxy S got anything past Gingerbread if even that.

Yes this is true. And I would think that the person looking for anything past 3.0 would be getting a new device by then. Most iPhone users roll over every year.

I'm not really understanding what you are trying to say here?

The proximity sensor is a non-issue. I have three iPhones, and none of them have any issues with it. The antenna problems == issue. I just purchased a full silicone case on Amazon I thought would look nice, and the antenna problems are no more.

I'm glad you got an IP4 that works for you. But there are many others who are not so lucky. I agree a case for the reception issue is a viable fix and it protects the phone.

but functionality, the incredible will do everything the 4 will do and do it faster. Just stating the facts.

Excellent! Now my massive iTunes library and well honed work flow can be even faster!!

Oh, wait ... :(

PS. With all that hardware listed in your sig I'd say you would be much better served by a nice flip phone of some kind. Just saying ... ;)

Android based phones, unlike the iPhone doesn't need a computer to sync with. Its all based on the cloud. The only fly in the ointment is the your music and for that you have doubletwist or salling media sync. Both can import your music and playlists from itunes.

Personally I found Salling to be quicker and easier to use.

Eh. I'm sorry, I'd rather it synch with my computer. Means that my contacts and calendar stays the same on both, music can synch between both, and it is faster to download programs on my computer than through my phone (and faster/easier to browse through programs). So I tend to do my app shopping on my computer (where I can look at the app in itunes and look it up on the browser and easier to switch between the two. And, sorry, I would highly doubt with the smaller screen and unability to see two windows that that Android would be better than using my computer either. The advantage android has there thoguh is being able to return the software so I can actually try it and decide so might not have to do as much searching around).

Actually after 2.2 froyo, the next one is going to be called Gingerbread and is supposed to be ready by the end of the year.

That's why a lot of us use Google contacts and calendar, which sync instantly to all our devices, be they phone or desktop. Very convenient and we don't worry about losing all our contacts with a drive crash.

and it is faster to download programs on my computer than through my phone (and faster/easier to browse through programs).

I do a lot of Android app shopping on my laptop via the AppBrain website and corresponding AppBrain Android app.

All I have to do is click "Install" on the apps I want on the website, and they show up for download on the corresponding phone app... over the air... without having to tether to the laptop.

Having to tether to a computer to do things is so... well... like being stuck in ten year old Microsoft ActiveSync cable mode.

How the hell does this phone not have an LED camera flash?

Otherwise, slick phone. I love my Iphone 4, I'd consider buying this.

Consumer Reports

Now that Consumer Reports has NOT recommended the iPhone 4 because of the antenna reception issues some may now look to alternatives. Like the OP stated, the Samsung could be an alternative.

This would pretty much kill it for me:

Performance: Here's the part where we hope to the powers that be that Samsung is hard at work or the Captivate we saw was an extremely early model. The phone we demoed was powered by an ARMv7 processor running at 800MHz -- though according to the official press release the phone is planned to have a 1GHz ARMv7 core (a Samsung Hummingbird, to be specific). Regardless, it was quite sluggish when maneuvering through menus, launching apps and trying to back track to the homescreen -- it was nowhere near as snappy as what we've seen in videos from the Galaxy S or as the Droid X we saw last week. The model we saw was confirmed to be a few months old, so our guess is that the final version will be a whole lot snappier than what we saw. Or at least that's what we're really hoping since the rest of the Captivate experience was pretty, well for lack of a better word... captivating.

Updated (6/29): We got to see a closer to final version of the Captivate at Samsung's US launch event. Everything about the phone was virtually the same, except for the performance. Things were definitely snappier and smoother on the newer model, though there was still some lag when opening applications and switching panes. There will be more impressions to come though in our upcoming review.

It's AT&T decision. Perhaps they wanted the phone to have at least some disadvantage vs iPhone :) Some versions of Samsung Galaxy S do have the flash. For example, Sprint's version will have it.

That's ridiculous if true. This looks like a really nice phone but after using the flash on my Iphone 4 I don't think I could go without.

Very annoying.

Verizon's version will have a LED flash as well. Not sure what AT&T was thinking by omitting it.
