Oh, by the way, the Facetime video feature on the iphone is awesome and works very well. How does the video calling compare on the EVO??

Qik or Fring are decent enough. Big difference is that you need a wifi connection to do video chatting on the iPhone. I can be out and about anywhere not dependent on a wifi signal and do video calling with my Evo and I like that alot.

EVO just feels cheap whenever i hold it, as were the iphones metal band and glass front and back panels make the phone feel like something from the future. Also the retina display is amazing, i would much rather have a small screen that looks that nice than a large screen that looks ehhh...., besides i have found the size of the EVO makes the phone impossible to hold! On the software side even an android fanboy would have to agree that OS is the far superior operating system given the large amount of time and research it has taken to make it that way. I had a moto droid and found applications quitting out all the time and the phone suddenly freezing up, as well as the phone getting hot enough to fry an egg on its back!! So I'm sticking with iphone but if you prefer EVO thats cool too!

Yes, the wifi necessity is a bit of a let down and I really don't think that AT&T is going to allow it over 3G anytime soon. But over wifi it is very clear with little lag. I was very surprised how good it worked, even over my slow wifi network. Can anyone who has used it on both phones compare the video quality?

So, which phone did you end up with?

Not decided yet. The wife prefers the iPhone so we might end up sticking with AT&T (we are awaiting her i4). I might wait for the new Samsung Captivate, although I hope At&t does not block installing non-market apps on it like it did with the Aria. I'm unlikely to choose at i4 due the 6 points I mentioned in my previous post. Plus, I also have the iPad, so i4 doesn't appeal to me much right now.

I'm not going to even get into the finer points of this debate, as I've been going back and forth between the two myself the past couple of weeks. But think I'm going to keep the EVO - every time I pick up my iPhone now it seems so tiny.

Anyway - my 2 cents - the kickstand is VERY UNDER-RATED - was eating out lunch today and flipped on the Mexico/Argentina soccer match and set the phone on the table there to watch it. I think my favorite thing about the phone is the kickstand (now if they just get MLB At Bat to stream video for Android I'll be golden :D )

Agreed, I did the same thing haha. Forget MLB at bat, get the Slingbox for Android they just released and you can watch real live games :)

I hold both phones right now and I'm sad to give one up.

I love love LOVE!!! the twitter for android app. I want a bird that tweets random stuff thats popular for the day on my iphone!

This is the hardest decision for me, and I don't have much time.

Why I returned the HTC EVO and going iPhone 4

I was one of the first in line to get an HTC EVO. For the first couple of weeks I was content. But thats when things started to go sour.

- Dust under the screen
I've had the phone for about a week and it already had dust in the upper left hand corner. With some searching on some EVO forums, apparently this is very common with not only the EVO but also the HTC Hero. Thats just unacceptable. My Palm Pre which I used for 1 year didn't have any dust at all under the screen.

- LCD screen quality
When compared with the iPhone 4, the colors look bland and washed out. For those of you who are familular with LCD technology, IPS is the best type due to the beautiful colors it can produce. Typical cell phone LCD screens are made of a cheaper kind of LCD called TN which that EVO uses. I have one of the better version of the LCD screen. I got lucky and received a 003 screen which has deeper black colors and accurate colors. However, when comparing it to the iPhone 4's screen, it looks like crap.

- Laggy screen responce
HTC decided to cap video to 30fps, but this is also affecting screen input. When you type too quick, the letters will not catch causing you to mispell words. I tried typing as fast as I could on the iPhone 4 and didn't miss one letter.

- Sprints 4G is over rated
I live in a city where 4G has been present for over a year and its not all its cracked up to be. I barely get above 3 megs at most and on average saw about 2 megs. I traveled to other 4G citities and saw about the same. I doubt Sprint will improve this since they can't even get their 3G network right.

- Battery life is terrible
I do light web surfing and text messaging here and there. I take it off the charger at 8a and by the time its for bed at 11p, its almost all drained. Thats what 4G, GPS, Bluetooth all turned off. And I manually end tasks of any programs running in the background periodically. I don't know why they included Sprint TV since it drains about 1% every 1 minute.

- Cheap feel
The whole phone is made of plastic except for the stand which looks like its made of stainless steel. The phone doesn't feel as solid as the iPhone... heck, any iPhone for that matter. I compared this with my friends iPhone 4GB 1G, and his phone is more solid feel then the EVO.

- Android OS isn't mature yet
Most of the popular apps I tried were either not compatible with the phone or they looked like crap. They are not as beautiful working and looking as the worst app in the Apple App Store. Scrolling isn't as smooth which is sad since it has the fastest CPU processor available to man-kind at the moment.

If their wasn't an iPhone 4, I would still keep my HTC EVO since it is the best phone out right now in my humble opinion. I like the LED notifications and live backgrounds. But those aren't enough to keep me. In the end the HTC EVO was fun, but its time for a better phone. iPhone 4, here I come.

**Update** 6/30/10
I got an iPhone 4 yesterday and had a chance to use it for a full day. Overall, the phone is much better then the HTC EVO in my opinion. Heres what I like about the iPhone 4.

- I was able to go a whole day without charging (still had about 40% when I got home!). On the EVO I would be completely drained by the time I got home.
- The OS is refined. Many little nice visuals and usability really add up quick. Everything from the smooth swipes, and sharp visuals really give the OS an edge over the Android.
- I will mention this again. The screen is absolutely amazing. I only own LCD monitors that are IPS. Colors are rich and sharp.

Here are some arguements I had with a friend about the iP4 vs EVO.
- It has live backgrounds!
The live backgrounds are awesome, and definately made me love Android. But unfortunately the live backgrounds were one of the biggest issues why I had battery life issues in the first place. I had to completely stop using them because of that.

- The widgets!
This is something I hope Apple will do with the next iOS. But on the EVO, most of the widgets I used and liked, didn't even work right. I would get error pop-ups or it wouldn't work at all. So after a week, I pretty much stopped using them because they didn't work right. The included SenseUI widgets worked, but almost all of them were crap (Ex: I wanted a 4x1 widget for my calandar. The SenseUI had one, but it could only display 1 future event).

- HUGE 4.3" screen!
Probably the reason why I dumped my Palm Pre to get the EVO. I like the huge screen because you are able to view webpages almost in full without zooming. Also, I didn't need to hold it right up to my face to see anything. Love the kick stand too. What really sucked was when I compared the screen to the iPhone 4. I should have never done that! As soon as I compared the two visually, the iPhone 4 made my EVO's screen look like total crap. The EVO's LCD was bland, and colors were washed out. I would rather have a smaller, high resolution, and rich color screen.

The iPhone 4 is far from perfect. A minus for the iPhone 4 is the "death grip". I don't really care for voice calling, but I do care about using the phone for everything else thats non-voice related such as surfing the web, games.. etc.. As I was holding my phone (As I would with any phone, in my left hand, the bottom palming it) and internet surfing, my webpages would load very slowly or wouldn't load at all until my hand didn't touch the left antenna. I hope Apple can fix this with a software update.

The iPhone 4 is like a BMW. Its not mechanically perfect and has some problems, but the experience you get from using it is unlike any other. Everyone should at least own one of these in their lifetime to experience one of the best product ever made.

At this point I approach all new droid based handsets as the boy who cried wolf.

All of them have been massively underwhelming.

With the next big thing being the Droid X, and seeing as how the iPhone 4 outspecs it before it even launches, I expect more of the same from it.

At least in the past some of the android phones might put out specsheets that made them look interesting on paper. The Droid X is not even doing that.

It is behind on paper which makes it even more likely to be behind in usability and functionality.

Anyways, sounds like you gave the EVO a fair shot, so enjoy your iPhone.

For some reason some people want to irrational hate on Apple, so they have to puff up other devices, because they have taken a stand against a company. The end up denying themselves the pleasure of using the best piece of hardware, simply because they have taken a ridiculous position on hating apple.

Regardless of who makes something, you should go with what device bests suits your purposes. Undoubtedly there are people out there where the android handsets do that. However in a lot of cases I know people are just irrationally depriving themselves of using a product they would get even more enjoyment from by switching to an iDevice.

I went from an EVO to the iPhone 4 as well. Used both devices/OS in the past and here's my 2 cents.

- Laggy screen responce
HTC decided to cap video to 30fps, but this is also affecting screen input. When you type too quick, the letters will not catch causing you to mispell words. I tried typing as fast as I could on the iPhone 4 and didn't miss one letter.

It's not the laggy screen that is causing that. It's because there is no multi-touch support for the HTC keyboard. Smart keyboard pro supports multi-touch and is a good alternative although it cost money. But on the Evo I prefer swype. Outside of that I never experienced any lag.

Depends where you are. Sprint's 3G is solid where I am. 4G is scattered but hitting around 3-4mbps. However, I get around 2mbps and up to 3 in most places here on AT&T. The downside is I'm a new customer and the 2gb sucks (having wifi almost everywhere I am during the midweek aleviates this). Unlimited is a plus on sprint. The major downside to wimax to me is that battery life is horrid on it compared to 3g.

My iPhone 4 has been better with battery life than the Evo. I would say 30-40% longer life with similar usage. But then the screen isn't isn't humongous and sucking down every bit of juice it can. When I first got it just idling with push mail drained the battery pretty quickly. But with a few tweaks I doubled the battery life on the EVO.

Most phones are going to pale in comparison to the iphone's build quality ;)

Agreed. This is what made me switch. Android does have apps that look beautiful and work perfectly, but there are many android versions of iphone apps that feel like a cheap imitation. Quality and quantity isn't there yet. The platform is young however and just needs time. I do miss the screen still. An iPhone with a 4" screen would be a dream come true :D

Cue Android fanboys in 3, 2, 1...

BTW - they seem to be popping up more and more to defend their choices since the iPhone 4 was released.

Kind of like the Nexus One outspec'd the iPhone 4 and it came out 6 months ago?

Probably because they can't understand why people are so brainwashed by an inferior product and Operating system. Personally if I were an Android fanboy i'd love to have a Nexus. Not many people have one. It's the cream of the Android Crop. It outspecs the iPhone.

It's kind of annoying that I walk by 50 people a day with the same phone as me.

holy crap, I've never seen an EVO in person but that thing looks like a brick.

"is that an evo in your pocket or are you just happy to see me" :D

there should be a size limit for phones in the modern era.

Thanks for proving my point. Please share with us how the Nexus One out-specs the iPhone 4. And please share with us how the problems with the Nexus One from launch (3G/screen issues) make it a better product.

Your post is full of troll-like statements only made to piss people off. Please go back in your hole.
