i did preorder in-store from at&t but with no official email or phone call yet. however, the status for my orders have gone from in-progress to shipped. my tracking numbers also dont work yet. i wouldnt really worry, i have a good feeling we will get ours on the 19th. i am going to call the local at&t rep though to see if they know more than we do.. *fingers-crossed!*

Excellent. Let me know what they say!

Has anyone here preordered from AT&T and is waiting for an email or phone call from your local AT&T store when the phone is ready for you to pick up? If so, has your order status gone from In-Progress to Shipped, but the tracking number still doesn't work?

Yeah! Mine today switched to "shipped" but the tracking # doesn't work.

status just changed in last 5 min

my status just updated with a departure scan but i am confused cuz it seems like the departure scan should take place after the arrival scan. anyone know? heres a pic

then you're still considered a new at&t customer too since your last provider was Sprint..I'm talking with an at&t rep right now to see which is true..

EDIT: The lady said this: you will be able to plug into iTunes and go through the process of activation.

That's a question I wanted to raise later. I am a new customer to At&t. I want to port my existing number from t-mobile. I hope I can do it after getting the iPhone. Am I correct? Or should I have given the existing number while booking the iPhone through apple online store? I tried but it was giving me errors.

Sorry RobCat

You will be the fool tomorrow when I'm taunting you on this board via my brand new 3GS!

You will not see your phone until Friday.
Apple WILL NOT release their phone to the general public before it is released in their retail stores. Why do you think the 7:00am opening.
The PR from their store, not your driveway is what they want the press to see.
And the East coast will see it first.

I guess we'll just see on Friday..at first she said that and then I was like "oh, on the site it says you can just plug it in iTunes to activate" and she's like "from what I'm hearing you have to go to a store".. then she put me on hold to double check and she said "yeah, sorry..you're going to have to go to the store" .. I'm talking with an AT&T rep right now to see if that's true. Update coming..

I spoke with an Apple rep and 3 separate AT&T reps about this. The APPLE rep said that ported numbers will be activated on the phone sometime during shipment and that my current phone would be dead until I activated the new one. We know that wouldn't happen.

the at&t reps all said that when you get the new phone you'll be able to activate it form home. The first rep said that I would need to call in to customer service (611) first to accept the terms and conditions of your contract, then finish the activation through iTunes. The other two said that I would need to just active through iTunes.

We'll see what happens, but I doubt that the apple rep was correct when they said that I may be without a phone for 1-2 days while I wait for the new phone.

cnbc is saying that even if you have it delivered home you still have to go to a store to get it activated. that blows!!!

the article is about why att sold out and apple didn't - bottom line is they think its because of the commissions att has to pay to its sales force.

Wow, if true. Of course if you have to go to AT&T to activate wouldn't the sales person still get the commision?

It departs first before it arrives, you're fine.

Technically it has departed from HK already on its way here, then you'll see an arrival scan.

I ordered mine last Friday from an AT&T store in my town. I have a tracking number, but every time I try to track it, it says not found. So maybe it isn't in transit yet.

Also, does anyone know how activation works in the AT&T Store? I really don't want some AT&T lackey unboxing my phone before I do. Do have to take it out of the box in the store?

I also ordered in-store, ATT says shipped w/ tracking, but doesn't work. Has anyone who ordered in-store have a working tracking number?

Excellent. Let me know what they say!

Bet money that I (Northern VA), will see my iPhone 3GS before Friday.

i just got off the phone with apple and for those of you who are new customers to AT&T aka porting a number..bad news:

-if you're a new customer to at&t, you can't just plug in your new iphone into itunes and activate it..you're going to have to go into an at&t store/authorized dealer to get it activated..this sucks. i thought i was going to be able to avoid the chaos on this day.....darn.

Actually, I had AT&T call me yesterday and confirm about my Verizon number being switched over. I talked to a girl named Ashley in the porting department and she told me all I would have to do is follow the directions of activating the phone and it would be completed. You can also go to http://www.att.com/port and confirm your number being ported over.

If you want to call AT&T's porting department to confirm this here it is: 888-898-7685

the email says "Delivers by: Jun 22, 2009" but when I go to the UPS tracking it says "Rescheduled Delivery: 06/17/2009."
Both the Apple Store and UPS tracking now say delivery on the 18th. I'm pretty sure this is when it'll actually arrive now. And mine appears to be on the same plane in Chek Lap Kok, Hong Kong, with 11:14pm origin scan as everyone else's. :D

yeah I ordered mine on the 10th and it finally updated to prepared for shipment, and still delivery by the 19th. So I'm guessing everyone is going to get there's on the 19th, it'll take more than 24 hours to get from China to the US. It'll also have to go through customs and such.

WOOHOOO... the wheels are in motion

I'm actually not sure. When I ordered my phone through apple.com, I gave them the number I was porting and the account number.

The apple rep I talked to said that in the process of shipping, since they know I'm porting a number and have all my info about it, my current phone may be disconnected for a day or 2 [until I activate on AT&T] since I'm bringing my new number over to a different carrier.

Because we already have an Origin Scan for Hong Kong, doesn't it mean the flight is already on the ground there and waiting for its next Departure Scan?

The times are pretty wacked out. My guess is the next scan will be an arrival scan in the US.

Mine looks just like yours. all the same exact times and everything. except my scheduled delivery date is the 18th. I'm in california so the different state is prolly why it has a different delivery date i'm asuming. I have no idea how the packages departed before they arived though. haha that one is new to me.

p.s. why does it say the product is "world ease" ?

Really? It says mine's confirmed but I haven't received a call about it..interesting. Thanks for the info!

Will you let me know what customer service tells you? I called the premier customer service (866-499-8008) and they told me it "may" ship out on the 18th to be delivered to me by the 19th (I paid extra for overnight shipping), otherwise, it would be Monday!

Let us know how it goes!

I've never had a problem with AT&T but this is my first iPhone, so I am slightly more edgy about this order than any other one I've made with them.

I just had a very pleasant 50 minute phone call with ATT, transferred three times, they were going to transfer me again, but the woman put me on hold while she just checked with the other department herself. And I STILL don't feel like I have a straight answer. They were all nice enough, but I definitely get the sense they have no idea what was going on.

She told me that it won't ship out until friday, to arrive sometime the next week. I don't even care about that so much anymore, I just wanted to know why my order status still says, "we expect to begin processing it shortly." They say it will ship Friday, though. So... I guess we'll see. I don't know why every time I place an order more complicated than "pizza" it turns into a struggle. :p

I was told by an AT&T rep that once I receive my iPhone, I should follow the steps in iTunes and at one point, I'll have to call AT&T to finalize the transfer. He said that once AT&T does their thing, I should be able to instantly make phone calls, but it could take up to 1 hour before I can receive them (in which they will just go to your old phone).

By the way, my porting status for my phone number says "Completed". It said "In Progress" up until today.

i am also a new customer to at&t and i made sure to ask this question when i pre-ordered in-store. the lady told me that it would be fine to port the numbers after you get the iphones (i am doing this bcuz my contract with Verizon actually doesnt end until june 27th and hence will have two phones until then) but yeah she made it sound really simple and that all i had to do was call her when i wanted to port my number which would then officially cancel the contract with verizon.
