This is my thoughts on why the White has been delayed and not released on launch day:-
Apple have either not realised the demand or have not produced enough phones, so have probably just continued to produce Black iPhones only. This does a number of things.
+ Creates demand for the alternate colour and makes the white feel more exclusive. (similar to the way they did it with only being able to get white on the 16gb 3G phones)
+ Further free advertisment and creation of suspence as the phone continues to be talked about in forums waiting around for the new colour
+ Knowing that it's prob best to stick with the launch date of 24th, by only releasing the Black version they know that a high proportion will wait for the White ones to become available, this then in turn gives a higher chance that phones will not be sold out as fast on launch date and cause people to complain that Apple have not supplied enough phones on launch as this is bad publicity.
By waiting, that cuts the initial demand for the phones and also make it appear more acceptable (as it is the consumers choice) to wait for the alternate colour.
This is my thoughts as to why they have done it this way as it creates more buzz and publicity than negative publicity and gives Apple a better picture on what the demand is on the colours available.
Apple will probably have a large amount of White ones in their own stock (but not enough for everyone) so expect this colour to be released and go out of stock again quite quickly. My guess is this will go on for quite a few months and after the first batch of white phones have sold out you will get the usual, stupidly priced white ones turning up on eBay.

Good thoughts. I agree that it's most likely a supply issue. I just wish they would have given us a heads up in advance.
Apple are not a 2-bit company....they are massive...its just a massive cock up!!!....u'd think a company like apple could manage to produce enough phones in both colour to be available on the so-called release date.....might not even bother now...really really p****d of maybe ex-apple customer!!!
I am holding out until the end of July at the latest but for me I wont get a black one if its not out by then, Ill just stay with Verizon. I do however think that the white iPhone will be available by launch day. I think they probably ran into a production hold up but will have it fixed soon. I also think that Apple will have some sort of official press release by this evening. I think they are catching a lot of negative press over it and will address it.

But also generates bad PR for them. It's not good when the CEO of the company builds up the hype for a product, states to the world that both will be available at the same time, then drops the ball an hour or so before the preorder starts, without any statement or anything of the sort, mind you. Just a small blurb on their site after it comes back up, saying "unavailable for pre-order or in store pickup". Not good there at all.
People are already complaining about it NOW. Either way, it is bad publicity. Apple has a product that they stated would be available for order today that isn't available for order today. News outlets are already picking up on that, like the San Francisco Chronicle. I'm sure Google News has already taken a run with this, and every Droid maker is going to say something about it too.
You shouldn't have to wait. That is the problem. Not that the consumer is entitled to anything, but this would have been a lot different if Apple were to have proactively said that White wouldn't be available. Waiting until the pre-order starts and then saying as such is rather misleading in the advertising (read: bait/switch).
Agreed. However, Apple should make this better by offering the white phone at a lower price since it wasn't the customer's fault on this. They screwed up, and it needs to be rectified.

I was able to pre-order a 32GB white at Best Buy...the word on the street seems to be that BB will be receiving white phones, but in very, very, limited quantities. If this is true, it might well be that Apple does not foresee having the inventory built up to accommodate a full pre-order for white phones for both themselves and AT&T via the website, but Best Buy, since they were set to be shipped only a fixed number of phones to begin with, is an easier order to fulfill.
I was originally going to go for the white one..but then Apple messed up *sigh* Went and pre-ordered a black one since I don't mind that much and I need it before my holiday. Who knows how long this delay will take, but I'm going on holiday in a month time and I would like to have it by then.
Screw waiting I want my contract to start as early as possible so that I have a higher chance at getting upgrade pricing when iPhone 5 comes out. Besides I had planned on getting black anyway.
How did you preorder it? Did you do it online or did you have to go into a store? Did they say they would give you the (white) iPhone on June 24th?
I have to say, I was disappointed when I saw that white was not available. Then as I sat here looking at the front of my white Iphone 3g, I realized that the area around the face of it was black and only the back was white ...... which got me thinking ........ would having a large white area surrounding the screen be a bit distracting? It's pretty large and I like the thought of the front "disappearing" when I'm watching a video.
Bottom line, the white looks classier in my opinion, but black is more functional, so 2 new black iphones for my wife and me it is!

I will also confirm that a friend of mine was able to preorder a white iPhone 4 via a walk-in at a Best Buy - receipt states white in description - however, they did inform him it may not arrive by the 24th, but up to a week later.
If they're smart, then yes. But there will probably be a restocking fee. I think Apple stores will have them on launch day, but people will line up super early, and they will go fast.

I'll wait a week or two, and if they don't have white by then, i won't get an iPhone this year and i'll just stop buying iPhones all together. Get your **** together, Apple.
I'm waiting because my wife said so. Actually she said it would be ok to order now but I know she really wants white so we are going to wait. As a Verizon customer I've waited 3 years for the iPhone so I'm sure I can wait several more months if need be. Besides, having an iPad has basically removed the want of having an iPhone - except that this BlackBerry Storm I've been using the past almost 2 years is horrible.
I'm very surprised how many people originally wanted white, but are too impatient to wait for it... It's crazy... We might have to wait a few weeks for the white iphone, BIG DEAL!!!
I wanted the white one, but I have been too excited to wait any longer for it to come out. So I ordered the black. I have a white 3GS anyway with a white case...black will be an ok change.
+1. If they dont have it within a few weeks Ill stay with Verizon and pick up an Incredible or Bold 9650. No sweat off my back. Dont want to give me what I want, Ill go with my next best option.
