[Merged] Waiting to get white iPhone 4 vs. black iPhone now

Our current iPhones work fine. We will wait until white is available.

I do not like having mine in a case. My wife uses a case, but she may use a bumper instead. I do not plan on ever getting screen protectors again. They do not add any value from what I can tell. They just build up crud and bubbles and lessen the overall experience.

I personally think the white looks better when it is not in a case... or even with a bumper. We will just wait.

The disregard for people who were planning on purchasing the white ones is insulting actually. So I spent the day thinking....surely we'll get some news on the "white delay". I'm fine with waiting but I'd like an estimate... are we talking the white ones will be available a couple weeks after initial launch or a couple months? Is it another "end of summer" fiasco.

So I decided I would see if I could pre-order the black one after all was said and done here at 9:00 p.m. and sure enough I got through... Now I'm sitting on the secure checkout screen with all information (credit card, address, shipping, cart etc) and me ready to hit the button "place order". But I'm torn.

So in a wildly optimistic gesture I hit the "live chat" button... have 14 minutes left... I'll see if I can find out anything...and ultimately make my decision. Get the black 32 gig now and know that I'll be just fine... or hold out for my heart's desire and get the 32 gig white one and a "later date"...

Just a little information concerning this whole "white delay" would have been nice.

Yep. That nails it for me. I was stoked to have a white one by the end of next week! Not because I can't wait any longer but because nothing said otherwise until this very early morning.

And this is the entire crux of the matter. And think of how much wonderful publicity Apple has received from it:

Detriot Free Press
Business Insider

And those are just for starters. While the bulk of the news is the crash/burn of ATT/Apple's servers, the bigger news is the poor customer service on this matter, and now both have to go into Damage Control. Correction: APPLE has to go into damage control. This could have been handled yesterday if not earlier. 1 hour prior is NOT the right time to do so.

Agreed. Like I said in other threads, Apple could easily make up for this by offering it at a discount because of their screwup on this. Black is going to be sold out now for a LONG while, like the 3G was when it came out (when I got my white 16GB 3G, black was still on a 9 week backlog, and that was 2 months after both came out), so now those that wanted White are going to have to wait while those that ordered Black can get theirs. Apple has a recompense they should act on..

already chatted them up and all they had to say was " sorry we do not have information at this time to answer your query. However if you are signed up to apple e-mail notifications you will be informed as soon as they ate available.

still hoping that they will have some at launch at the apple store (crosses fingers) holding off upgrading both of my lines to the white 32 gb

What really tanks is that by the time we find out anything about it, all of the black pre-orders/reserves will likely be filled. On the other hand, I'd probably kick myself if I just got the black either way.

Well of course they're not going anywhere... however as I was a day one adopter of the original iPhone waiting and patience isn't exactly my strongest personality trait.

So after all that... I decided with the Black 32 gig and got my order through. Just awaiting the email conf. like everyone else. Something is up with the white ones for them to be so hush hush about it. (IMHO) And I don't want to wait till August or later. I know I'll love my black one just like I loved my black ones before.

I have a funny feeling this has to do with the ambient light sensor / proximity sensors that are in the little checkered box. In the black phone, they are just under the glass. I am wondering if the sensors aren't being responsive because of the new design only the white model has. 😕

They're under the glass on the white phone too dude. You can just see it easier. The phones are the same.

i agree that from a customer service standpoint it's really inexcusable to not explain what is going on.

Apple should be forthcoming and let everyone know what's going on. Limited supply...manufacturing delays....whatever... Make something up. Even if they don't want to explain for image issues what is really going on they should say something.

For a company who usually has excellent customer service it is very uncharacteristic and raises doubts/questions.

I was originally going to order 2 16GB White iPhone 4 today. My lady's iPhone 3G is in dire need of replacement, so we have one coming from AT&T Premier next week. After hours and hours of trying, I finally got a black iPhone 4 into my cart. Once I thought about adding a bumper and holding the black phone, I decided I couldn't give up hope on a white one.

My 3GS doesn't need immediate replacement, and I have the iOS 4 running fine, so it is no trouble waiting here. The only disappointment is Apple's poor communication regarding the White iPhone 4. Many people could have planned better if Apple was open from the start. I simply hope they add some sort of timetable soon, otherwise my iPhone money will turn into iPad with FaceTime money.

1st I cannot order my 16gb white model... 2nd I've been stuck on a loading screen over and over all day on apple.com not being able to add anything to my cart after settling for a black 16gb...

now it says july 2nd ship date... pretty effed up apple. i have nothing to say to you. 🙄

Ah, I didn't know the checkered appearance was on the black one too. I guess you just can't see it as easily. I was thinking people said they appear as black dots on the black one and didn't want them to be black dots on the white one since so many black dots would look weird. So, they placed the sensors behind the checkered looking thing.
