"The funnest iPod." Apple is developing the touch into a beefier gaming/PDA portable. Before the touch was released, it was laughable to iPod purists about the circulating rumors that wi-fi will be present. Why? Because it was only a music player and iPods are minimalistic in design. They never concieved where the App Store was evolving. A few months ago, when the DSi started rumors about a camera to enhance gaming experience, I wasn't too surprised. Now this rumor about a camera in the touch, totally possible, due to future games/apps. Anybody ever wondered why the Compass in the upcoming iPhone is such a big deal ;)? A camera in the Nano, on the other hand, is laughable.

Personally, all I want is OLED (unlikely especially if the third generation iPhone won't utilize one) to improve battery life, the ability (not just 9 pages) to view all your app icons ala Mac OSX dashboard/spaces, the 64gb capacity, and a beefier ARM processor.

Someone who is on the on the same wave length as me ;)

As soon as 2nd gen was touted the "funnest iPod ever" I got the feeling the 3rd gen iPod would be a full on gaming device.

People do not get that Nintendo and Sony are not competing against the iPhone they are going up against the Touch.

Better graphics, faster processor, camera, magnetometer are guaranteed I believe to compete with the gaming market. I also think it's going to be completely redesigned to make it better for gaming.

Just playing devil's advocate, if you don't mind. :)

The touch is my favorite portable due to its form factor and capacity (64gb coming this fall). The touch/iPhone processor is still way more powerful that what the DSi and the PSP Go currently utilizes. I love the touch's simple games as well. But that's just it, simple games. No matter how cool our touch/iPhones are in form factor, these could never complete against a full-force gaming portable like the PSP: PHYSICAL BUTTONS.

It'll be interesting though where Apple will go with this if they are in fact thinking of facing the portable gaming market head-on. But honestly, they are just, as usual, staying in the middle ground. Good (not excellent) gaming and PDA capabilities in a small minimalist package. But then again, there's also the possibility of upcoming "Made for iPhone/iPod touch" gaming accessories that would hit the nail on the PSP coffin.

The casual gaming market ("simple games") is something that both Sony and Nintendo are trying to reach. Nintendo had it until the app store and all of those games came out for the Touch.

Add-on accessories are now possible with some limitations. Although I honestly think the whole accessory must work with a specific app thing will change.

I'd like to see something like this ready to be demoed at Septembers event

I don't see that happening. I think they'll add some buttons, that wouldn't surprise me at all. But it won't become a full fledged gaming device like that. It's going to be much more subtle. Let's see how Apple designs it.

I think that is an add-on that the touch plugs into.

yep it's an add on concept

Certainly it will still be an iPod and it will always be marketed as an iPod but the updates for the 3rd gen will allow more major developers to make more in depth and lengthy games is what i'm getting at.

An SD card reader, bullet cam attachment, and DVR capabilities would be pretty sweet for the touch. I know there's probably a pricey DVR device for the iPod but I would like to be able to use my AV cable to hook it up and just hit record on the Touch.

Yeah I hope itll have an OLED screen, dvr capabilities, built in camera, HD output. Better yet let it play HD video on its screen.

Since the iphone is out, we know that there's compass and 2x faster processor. WOnder if those will be out for the ipod touch third gen.

Additionally, will 16gig third gen be the price of 8 gig 2nd gen?

At this point these are my guesstimates...

Magnetometer
Speed bump
increased capacity
voice control
bluetooth
camera

While a 64gb will be introduced the 8gb will remain but the 8gb is going to be the same as the 2g inside wise with a drastic price drop and won't have some the features as the others like a camera

Design change. Either it will be smaller with the same screen size or the same size as now but with a larger screen.

I think that they could offer a cheap iPod Touch like what they're doing with the iPhone. They clearly want to expand their platform. Get an iPhone or iPod Touch into more hands. Expands the audience for the App Store Developers. Also, it gets people to look at the Mac platform.

For those reasons, I think you could see an 8 GB iPod Touch for somewhere between $149-$179 as a 2G.

Oh, I forgot to add that I think it will definitely get increased battery life.

$149 was the price I am thinking

You guys think that there will be a design change? I certainly hope not, so that I can still make use of my protections from b4..

Seeing that iphone 3g S does not seem any different from the previous gen (in terms of exterior), perhaps ipod touch will keep to its design as well w/o any changes.

I think the ipod will have a design change since they are going to want holiday shoppers to buy a new one even though they may have bought one last year.

With voice control will come a built in mic as well

And they will ship with 3.0

1000

People let's get to 1000 replies before we have to end because the 3rd gen comes out

We have 3 months to get 530 replies

If we all help we can do it!

I think there will be a design change simply because its time for the Touch to be seen as something more then a poor mans iPhone.

I started a thread about this and was informed that the feature is only in 3GS. Even if it does pop up when they start shipping with 3.0 that means it will certainly be in the 3G

I'd bet against a design change that would diverge farther from the iPhone. To me it seems more likely they'd add a camera simply because they might be able to save on production/unit costs if the iPhone and Touch are even more similar.

As to the regular debate on should it have a camera or not... I don't really see it as important one way or another. I can't imagine it's the deciding factor on whether someone chooses a Touch or iPhone. You either want a phone or you don't.

All that being said, I was disappointed in the iPhone hardware upgrades. I was expecting more. I am looking forward to the 3.0 software next week though.

This won't be a major update, just like the iPhone wasn't a major update. All under the hood for the most part. You may see a camera or a mic. Other than that bumped up memory is all.

Next year there will be more substantial updates.

I better do except for dvr capabilities

Okay, not reading the pages of other posts makes me wonder why this is something people expect? Are you kidding me? Apples own set top box doesn't do this why would an iPod? Everything is up in the air. Im sure we will get more storage, an OLED screen along with a silent upgrade to the iPhone possibly. Faster processor and more ram like the 3G S and maybe a mic.
