So IMHO I see new MBP's before the end of the month like most of you. However, I dont see them anytime in the next week.

why???

New IPODS & ITUNES people...both are huge sources of revenue for apple. marketing wise it makes no sense to take away from their exposure for a computer that sells even less then the IMAC. give it some time...more then we already stinking have unfortunately.

So basically i think theyve held out mainly for marketing reasons ONLY, NOT ENGINEERING, and I Bet theyve even updated more then just the chip...i think it was more important for them to announce new ipods and itunes well BEFORE microsoft and other competitors seeing as they make more money on those and in turn take the hit on the few computer sales theyre losing. but in the long run their scheduled releases have looked pretty incredible people...just in the two month span look at what apple has announced/released!!! macpro, imac, ipod, i tunes, nano, shuffle, mini, iTV and you think theyre going to leave out mbp and mb? I THINK NOT. photokina my guess, but before the end of the month for sure. besides the article this thread is based on has been updated to say the SAME.

THAt's two months for newer versions of EVERYTHING! when do you see this from any other company?

so theyre two months late at worst. TRUST ME their laptop sales are still GROWING STRONG regardless of the few of you that are now switching to PC's because of the wait...each yonah sale right now is considerable profit and more then making up for your impatience. it sucks but its the harsh truth..theyre a BUSINESS.

Alright while we are waiting, can someone give me some solid reasons to whether or not you think they will be updating the MB along with the MBP to the Core 2 Duo? I only ask because honestly I will probably get a $1500 black MB rather than a $2000 MBP because Im a poor college student.

I feel I have the need to wait until the update comes out but at the same time I dont want to miss out on the good edu deals that end on the 16th. Then if they do have an update and dont update the MB then I will feel bummed.

So, do you think they will stick a C2D in the MB as well to keep up with the cheaper Dells/Sony's that have them, or am I dreaming of a false hope?

I would think it might be a good idea for them do a split upgrade on the MB. Merom for the Blackbook and maybe upscale up white. Stick with Yonah in the base MB and take advantage of the lower cost to drop price.

There are many arguments for and against MB's getting C2D soon (just read these forums and you'll see), or at least near or at the same time as MBP. The biggest question you should ask yourself is, "do I need it now?" If you don't, then I say wait. If you want it now, get it now. It's still going to be a great computer for years to come.

MacBookPro

This conversation and speculation seems like it could go into January 2007. Who has the best info on when to purchase a MacBookPro? The shopping guide on this website says to WAIT, UPDATES SOON. I need to make this purchase sooner rather than much later, but if heard that the next updates were soon (in September), I would wait.

What will be the difference, (comparision) between a MacBook Pro I can buy today and the "next version" I might get in a few days, weeks, or months?

I do professional photography and work with RAW images. I value the best graphics card I can get and love speed and power (currently working on a G% Quad 4megs RAM, but bought slow video card that I cna't get repalced!) .

Do I need to wait? What am I really waiting for? What will I get in terms of performace?

Thanks!

Yes, merom will be nice, but I'm also waiting for a larger, replaceble HDD, better GPU and more RAM, all at (or nearly at) the same price points across the MBP spectrum as today's machines. I don't see myself dropping 2G or more for a computer with a small/slow/nonreplacable HDD, 512MB RAM, low grade GPU and a suddenly oudated processor just for the privillage of running OSX. Sorry, Apple.

I to am waiting to buy a MBP with a Merom, but the above quote sort of cracked me up. The first HDD I purchased to use with home computer (an Apple // at that) had a 30 Mb capacity and with controller card cost me $3000. I can also remember, in my capacity as the manager of the engineering computer dept. for a major US company) paying $45,000 for a 900 Mb cluster of drives (in fact 3 X 300 Mb 18" diameter platters) in 1981/1982. So seeing a 120 Gb drive as being refered to as "small/slow...." is a bit amusing.:D :D

I guess all things are relative.

I may not know when our new MBP's are coming out...but I am sure that the second they come out, there is going to be mass chaos in this thread! Good luck waiting everybody, try to get some sleep...:p

On another note...would it make sense for Apple to release the new MBP at Photokina? I mean...this is primarily a photography event, correct? I can't see Apple release a new computer during an event aimed at photos. (Such as Apple releasing the computers at an iPod event [yesterday]) Let's just hope if this is true, they get released EARLIER than later...:(

I think most photographers have/want Macbook Pro's for heir shoots. :) I know I do, and Phootokina is therefore kinda relevant imo.

The main practical difference is the C2D is 64bit and the C1D is not. If you do not care about 64 bit, NO NEED TO WAIT.

The speed difference is minimal and it might be HOTTER.

It may not make sense to release new MBP's during Photokina. I can see Apterture being updated, as well as new iSight cameras (or new cinema displays with built in iSight or both for those who have older cinema displays), but whether we'll see updated MBP's, who can tell.

I'm beginning to veer away from the idea of new MBP's at Photokina just a little, even though it is sort of a professional venue--new MBP's would fit right in. Not that we can really make assumptions based upon what apple has done in the past, but just as the new iMacs were made available a week before the "It's Showtime" event, I can see Steve and Co. releasing C2D MBP's a week before the Photokina event in order to keep things staggered, releasing systems that sort of fit into slightly what the next event delivers--Core 2 Duo 24" iMac with HD display fits into the availability of movies on the iTunes Store. Hopefully releasing C2D MBP's will conceivably fit into whatever apple has planned for their appearance/event at Photokina.

Keep in mind as well, that supposedly, at least according to Hardmac.com (I haven't seen confirmation of this anywhere else though), there will be an apple event on the 25th, just before Photokina. What they'll do at the event remains to be seen of course.

- Apple Special event at Photokina

As forecast, there will be an Apple Special Event at the beginning of the Photokina in Cologne (Köln) on September 25th from 4.30 to 5.30 pm.
With two special events in a month, be dead sure Apple is going for a big hype!

My best educated guess now is for this coming Tuesday, the 19th.

sort of fit into slightly is about right... those "movies" are shrunk to 640x480 so why do we need a HD iMac to watch them? Now, a MBP with a HD screen (ie 1920x1080) might be useful to those who make movies... tho I'm wondering whether my middle-aged eyes will be able to see the GUI at that res  so maybe there is a point in waiting for Leopard (am I right in believing it will have a scaleable GUI?) to introduce a useful HD MBP.

Because we'll have the option to download HD versions of movies and other content next year (maybe this year.)

I guess I'm out of your league here -- paid a mere $500 for a 20 Mb external drive circa 1988, and then another $500 for a 100 Mb drive a couple of years later (boy did that make me feel good :D ). I'm thinking of getting the low end MBP, so it's really the the 80 Gb standard that gets my blood boiling. How does Apple justify charging $200 for an 80 Gb to 120 Gb upgrade when Dell does this for $32?

bad news...

Just talked to my friend again who works at the apple retail store. He said that there is a huge supply of current model Macbook's and Macbook pros, so supply isn't down as would be the case if there was an update. Also he said thursday night they are updating the store with just ipods and imacs. :-( ...

That's not necessarily bad news. It honestly doens't point to whether MBP's with C2D will show up Tuesday or not. Though it's interesting to hear someone with a friend who works in an apple store, so keep us informed. :)

Wait, so you're saying that the new Merom MBPs will only have a processor bump?

Or did you forget about possible:
(1) Magnetic latch
(2) Swappable hard drive
(3) "Maybe" a new GPU (x1800 or equivalent?)
(4) Long shot to a new case
(5) Potential fixes to current Rev A problems

Everyone who is waiting for 64-bit only should not wait. That I agree with. But there are a lot of other important extras other than the Merom switch.

For these reasons I’m thinking the revision will happen on October 4th for MBP and October 22nd for MB.

For all I know it could happen next week, but I would like to see a class act upgrade with no design flaws.

This makes a lot more sense to me.
