Don't you think the MBP's will get merom before MB's? Could it be possible that they add merom's to all the portables at once?

I guess they will release next rev. of MBP (1gb as a standard, fw800, magnetic latch, etc) soon; MB will get just a new processor (maybe 1gig too).

I have to admit, i have been reading the inq for a LONGGG time, and i have to admit, there are some times when they are wrong, but they have been really dead on lately (last year or so) with leaking info etc...(AMD/Dell deal for broke here and no one believed it, three days later boom it was everywhere)...

Now you do have to watch SOME of the things they say, but there is ALOT of truth behind what they can be saying. If apple had C2D's (like they do obviouolsy) they are going to update the product that THEY feel needs updating, aka Imacs...the MBP's are selling great, the channel is moving and the supply reports are all strong right now. Thats not saying in a month they willl go C2D or that Apple doesnt have test machines with them, the more and more I think about it i dont see apple going C2D on ANY end of the scale with the MB pRo...i could be totally wrong. (hoping i am cause i want one BAD!) But from what i am being told is Apple is filling the channel with MBP's just like they have been the last four months...

Another point, Intel will only be at 20% production of C2D's by new years, look on Newegg etc or even the channel suppliers are having trouble getting C2D chips for notebooks(merom not conroe).

Possibly next week?

Just a heads up. I have a friend who has been asked to work late at an apple retail store next thursday to move macs around, between 9PM and 4AM. My friend says that it could just be the new imacs, 24", but 9PM to 4AM seems like a long time to move just imacs around the store. Possibly new MBP's and other products? I hope so!

Like a lot of you, I'm also approaching the purchase point for a new MBP. I hope next week will bear some good news for us.

btw:
WTF kind of a phrase is "syphilitic trickle"? Literally, I take it to mean the puss that oozes out of the sores from a syphillis-infected genitalia/area. That's professional writing right there (rolleyes)

I would disagree with that. If they want to increase their market share they have to keep pace with the other intel laptop makers. Some people may be dead set on buying a mac, but if they want to grab more of the high end market, they have to stay high-end. People have said it again and again, no one else has shipped yet either, so Apple isn't behind. I agree. But they will be behind very soon if they don't release the C2D laptop, and I am sure people much smarter than I am at Apple are fully aware of that.

Indeed.

I don't see people paying premium prices for what will be seen as outdated product.

I often hear the argument that the average consumer doesn't know the difference. I disagree, in that they don't, but they do read the nice bullet-point ads, and Core 2 Duo does sound "newer" that Core Duo -- that few could (at least currently) tell the difference in use is neither here nor there.

This PAGE 2 story is a little alarming on the surface. I'm sure those of us patiently (or not so patiently) waiting for C2D MBP's felt our stomachs churn a little while reading this article from The Inquirer. So it got me thinking about a few things.
t.

Well put. My stomach turned when I read this. I've been waiting a long time for Merom notebooks. If it doesn't happen, I don't think I'll spend the money on anything for the time being. Let's hope this isn't true

This rumor is garbage. Doesn't make any sense whatsoever. While the rest of the world goes Merom, Apple is going to... wait until Santa Rosa to upgrade?

Probably they are waiting for a complete redesign of the macbook pro internals! Because ... they have the maximum number of issues with them. Or hurriedly upgrading to Merom (which generally idles a higher temperatures ) is going to have more quality problems [costing apple a hell of a lot more]? Most of Apple's inctroductions (features) have always started from the imac. Imacs have the mximum refreshes because it is easy to upgrade stuff. MacBooks are the apples's most popular item not a an imac. And with the movie push ...imac is much more important than a macbook pro.

Well I think I have also decided that my drop dead date for buying a MBP will be the end of next week also. If nothing is said on the 12th or within a day or two after then I must fear the worst and this Inquirer artical is true, sad as it is.

I was really hoping they would be announced before the 16th also so that I might still get in on the education deal they have (iPod+printer) :(

However! my hopes are still high that Apple wont let us down! *Fingers Crossed*

I wish you could expand on this...It would make a big difference on whether or not I wait...AHHHHH:eek:

I think you got that a bit wrong. Take Dell. They sell substantially more computers than Apple, but they make the big numbers by selling crappy Celeron processors; no money in that for Intel. At the high end (Core Duo and upwards) where the money is for Intel, Apple is most definitely not small fry. And of course Dell has blown it by going with Dell, so I would think that they did just slightly slide down on the priority list.

Most of the dell line up is Core Duo [as low as 700-800] range. And yes, with intels one price for all slogan, THey will make the same profit per chip irrespective of HP/APPLE/DELL so ... more they sell more profit they get. More over Intel needs DELL and HP to sell Woodcrest [apple probably is negligible in this market] workstations, servers (where AMD is killing it!) etc. So guess what just because you are paying apple more than you pay dell, intel really does not give a damn as they get the same amount!

Just checked mine: shipping 18th, delivery 27th. It's certainly not coming from Europe with that kind of delay.

Mine's on the same delivery schedule, and I live in the states!

Merom's idle temp is pretty much the same as Yonah's. In the tests I've seen, even at full load it was comparable. One such example is here,, but it's not the only one I've read.

i would be very happy if apple found enough of the chips to power the macbook pro line, the macbook line can wait for it.

also, hard to say the meroms are limited in supply, they are shipping imac's with them. so... they are a high volume type computer.

also, wonder why apple wouldnt give in and build a new form on the imac. that way they could use conroe chip with more power.

oh well, hope apple uses the conroe in a new midsized tower with some power, and upgradability.

"syphilitic trickle of Meroms"

I've never seen the phrase "syphilitic trickle" used like that (or in any context for that matter). Maybe he could try using "gonorrheic impediment" as an alternative.

 hehe :p

This is probably a dumb question, but does anyone know how many Merom chips Apple ordered from Intel?
