This is probably a dumb question, but does anyone know how many Merom chips Apple ordered from Intel?

Three, theres actually only one of each imac size in existance :p

Joking, I have no idea but I do remember reports that they were recieving large shipments early on. But then this article would contradict that.

I can't believe apple will wait until 2007 and not keep up, I reckon a case redesign is doubtful at this stage though. Reports that MacBooks have the same shipping dates irrespective of country is interesting but then again may mean nothing. Anyone ordered a MacBook Pro lately?

Depending on how many they were getting (and if these orders were the size of say, Dell's) then they may make a simple switch. But if they are a lot lower than the competition they may isolate the Merom chips for only a few select families of computers.

Mine's on the same delivery schedule, and I live in the states!

That is a pretty long wait time, hopefully because they are putting in new goodies! Did you by chance order it with the edu discount? I heard that those were shipping before the regular orders to get them out to students starting school.

White Macbook with 80 GB hard drive and 1 Gig.

Macbooks are experiencing delays. It has to do with a supply shortage. Apple is being generous with the ship dates so that they will get it to you on time or early. Folks speculate it has to do with back to school. There are other discussions on this.

Adding Merom to the MBP is as simple as dropping in Merom chips and tweaking the firmware. Utterly trivial. They could do this as a stop-gap to a case redesign and the only risk there is annoying people who bought in the window between the Merom intro and the case intro. Given Apple do upgrades essentially without warning on a regular basis, I don't see that deterring them. Besides, I'd expect a case upgrade when Santa Rosa was ready, since that will need a redesign anyway...

For some. For some it's a reason to go with Dell/HP/Lenovo instead. As I've said before, Apple already has the Comitted-to-OS-X market. It's the might-buy-Apple switcher market they're chasing now.

excellent point. ive decided i want a mbp, but in reality, if they arent going to bring out merom until 2007? ill probably go elsewhere.

i have been looking forward to switching from PC to apple and getting a Merom MBP but if Apple is going to be slow about upgrading then I will just stay on the pc side....

You gotta love when someone drops this kind of bomb. Could be totally making it up, could actually know something. With no real way of knowing... It's definitely things we'd like though--hinting at a 2 button trackpad, and cooler termperatures.

to be honest, I don't want a two button trackpad. I enjoy the one button because it is just as simple to right click with two fingers.

If I were to add anything it would be a magnetic latch. Sorry, I do NOT want an option of a black MBP. It would be just like every other offer that Apple has for products. Let the Pro line be. It just seems too cliche almost.

I love the MBP as is. Let's just put Merom in it, sell them, and move on with our lives.

Wait till the "Where is Santa Rosa?" threads come in. Those will be fun. ;)

Well, since he hasn't come back to elaborate on such a turgid statement, I'd guess he knows about as much as the rest of us--very little.:)

nope, you have no real way of knowing... ;)

I think the rumour is possibly true.

As we all know Apple produces high quality computers.

Like for instance the last time, they reduced the Macbook Pro by 0.1mm and the DL Superdrive no longer fits, but what did they do instead? They delayed the launch and waited for a suitable drive to be available before releasing it!

Also they delayed the launch to incorporate the latest design innovations such as the Magsafe connector, magnetic display latches, and ez-access hard drive panel in!

Of course they also ran that last MBP through a user group comprising of 1,000,000 users to ensure that no bugs are present in the hardware.. oh, and none of these users actually leaked a word of it to the media! Amazing isn't it?

That's high quality for you!

So here it is happening again. The current NAPA chipsets are not capable of 64 bit memory addressing. Why even bother releasing an update? Apple will wait until Santa Rosa is out, because all Apple products are perfect at launch.

Oh wait...

blah, screw it. If its not out by the 16th im buying. I cant wait any longer with school starting. Ill just be happy with what I get and try not to sob too much when they come out the day after I get mine lol

I get the tone of your post, but being mindful of preventing false rumor spreading, Napa64 supports 64bit operation. The difference from Napa? Napa uses Yonah, Napa64 uses Merom.

Napa is a platform name.

Mind you, Apple's laptops^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hnotebooks don't even support the full 32bit address space of 4GB...

Hi guys, I'm arriving from NYC this morning, I've read the forum everyday hoping for big news, and nothing.

I saw the new iMacs with Merom processors and no MacBook Pro's, so I bought a 17" MacBook Pro with a glossy screen (I never tought I liked so much), and the computer it's beautiful and really fast (compared with my PowerBook G4 1.67 Ghz.).

So no more rumors and waiting, I'm enjoying my computer right now, it's for sure the Merom's MBP will come maybe next week, or next month, but right now, I'm done.

It's like taking out a big rock from my back.

So, how do you find the glossy screen compared to your old matte one?

for those of you who read this over too quickly, notice the awful grammer, or is it a clever code?

Tracking, Mighty, Cool

someone mentioned a new trackpad? mighty? as in mighty mouse? cooler temperatures?

perhaps you meant grammar? =p

All kidding aside, I get the Tracking and Cool part, but what would a mighty mouse have to do with a laptop? I don't want one, it doesn't work well with WoW =p

Really beautiful, right now I have my Powerbook and the MacBook pro side by side and the difference is tremendous, the matte screen seems old and dirty compared with the glossy. I've read somewhere that this is love it or hate it, in my case, love it.
I was at the apple Store with all those lights and no problem, I really recomend it. A beautiful machine, and available today!!

could this difference also be attributed to the fact that the MacBook Pro's (matte and glossy) are brighter than the older Powerbooks?

True true... if the new MBPs even support 3GB of ram it is a bonis!

Maybe, but even with the bright difference, theres more detail and sharpness in the glossy screen, I saw the two MBP in the Apple store side by side, the matte screen and the glossy screen, and you can see the same difference.
For me it´s glossy from now on.
