This may have already been answered, but I wonder what the field of view is. My quest 2 saved my sanity during the Covid lockdown because I could meet up with friends and have somewhat of a social life.

It seems like the negativity over this is a combination of hatred for Meta and ignorance of the technology.

I don’t use any Meta platforms, but I feel it is positive that they are continuing to develop in the VR/AR area. The technology has been dreamed about since the 80s — having large companies investing billions into it will be good for everyone.

Regarding ignorance, some of the comments I hear around VR/AR remind me of early comments about the internet. Major publications and seemingly intelligent people were predicting that it would fail. Bill Gates didn’t see it until late. Even Bob Metcalfe said that in 1996 the internet would “catastrophically collapse”. It is difficult to question your own thinking, but the advantage is that you could avoid looking like a fool later.

You heard it here first:

Apple's AR headset/glasses will use the Apple Watch and Siri Voice Control to operate the interface. There is a reason iPhones started shipping with an IR range finder(AR range finding for virtual signs/banners/information), and the Watch now has an upgraded accelerometer. If you want a preview of the controls the headset will use, turn on assistive touch in accessibility settings for your Apple Watch. Traditional VR controllers will be completely optional, if available at all. (Mainly for gaming)

It's so obvious I'm stunned more people aren't talking about it, or I'll be shocked if Apple doesn't use it.
Hahaha dude I can assure you it won’t use an Apple Watch to operate. No one has Apple Watches when compared to the iPhone.

If their idea is to use Siri you can absolutely forget it. Siri is a slow, terribly inaccurate and imprecise way to navigate an OS.

Think harder…

A smartphone is held in the hands. What makes sense to navigate a smartphone with? Your fingers.

Smart glasses are worn on your face. What makes sense to navigate smart glasses with? Your eyes. In addition to eyes they’ll probably use a ring or band around a wrist that simply has accelerometer and gyro to tell the glasses when you tap your finger on anything.

So for example, you’ll look at the back button on the screen, then when you tap (on anything including just tapping your fingers together), that will send the signal to the glasses that you made an input to tap, and you’ll trigger the on-screen action.

The pointer is your eyes, and the input is a tap of a finger on anything.

I have absolutely no interest in VR, AR I can see uses for to help others, but VR can stay where it is. Unfortunately for me I rely on some Meta products because my friends are tardy with emails and too lazy to check a website once in a while for content this is an area I wouldn’t want them involved in my life, but each to their own

This is an enterprise level device, with a price tags to match. Battery life is an issue on these devices in general, as we are far behind on battery technology, even if an when Apple releases a headset, it too will struggle with battery life.

Think about your phone, running all its cameras and your screen on all day. How long would your battery last? Additionally, how hot would it get? It wouldn’t last for more than 3-4 hours max, because it’s also having to process all of that information.

That’s why this is so impressive.

This is where Apple silicon gives them a huge advantage. They can probably get 2x the battery life at 4 hours, which would still be really good.

I realize that Meta gets a lot of hate, but I’m more excited about this announcement than I have been about any of the Apple ones of late. Meta tries to show us behind the curtain in terms of research that they are doing and what they foresee as the next steps of the platform. While WWDC has done this to some extent, it’s limited in its scope, and feels in many ways stale.

What was the breakout feature in iOS 16? The Lock Screen. That’s the biggest change in iOS 16. You could say the new multitasking view in iPadOS but it’s all just small upgrades at this point.

Meta is trying to build a whole new category and I for one am all in.

Do I trust Meta more than I did before? Heck no. But at least they are trying something new and have some ‘courage’.
I agree. The only innovation Apple has produced in the last 10 years has been in their own custom silicon.

When you make something the core value of your company, then you violate that core value, it destroys your company. Meta makes their money selling your data. Apple makes their money selling you products and services. If they ever get caught violating people's privacy, it will largely be the end of their company. Why would they risk that? (They are very explicit about how they collect data and how they use it. Is it perfect protection? No. It is very good.)

But then they take Googles money for default search in iOS. Don't collect the data themselves but happy to take money from those that do

Apple: Privacy is a fundamental human right. It’s also one of our core values.

👇 👇 👇

Just like they care about the environment as their core value… when it saves or makes them money. Otherwise it’s 100% planned obsolescence and fully glued construction that can’t be repaired.

Like many here, I’m lukewarm on this for myself, but recognize that it is going to be transformative on a level similar to the internet and the smartphone.

I wouldn’t go near Facebook’s Meta garbage, and I’m super glad Apple is around to provide an alternative to people who see the horrible violations of privacy this could engender. I’m excited for their announcement in early 2023.

All that said, leave it to Zuckerschmuck to fully crystallize the saddest aspect of this (and many other forms of) technology on their promotional page, no less:

“Together, apart.”

This is a slogan you will NEVER see from Apple, I can guarantee you that.

No normal person has any use for this that they can justify on a daily basis. The majority of developers will take years to get on board with this and then be let down that it doesn’t take off.

It’s just a glorified Google Glass in the making, only worse.

Meanwhile, iCloud+ which has great privacy features is a paid-for add-on.

Comical when they announced that and the fact that it costs money.
iCloud and all it’s great privacy features is free. If you want or need more storage, sure you pay for the +. I pay exactly $0.99 each month for expanded storage which retains the great privacy features of iCloud.

For $1500 you'd think they'd also throw in a complimentary tube of lubricant to improve both the pre and post purchasing experience...

They’re showing their half baked ideas because they desperately need buy in to allow zuck to keep flushing billions of dollars down the toilet.

Apple on the other hand has not shown anything, but have been building whatever this is for literally a decade now behind the scenes.

Why all the hate for Mark Zuckerberg and Meta?

They give me cookies for free, and I don't even use Facebook, or Instagram!

And if I happen to delete their cookies by accident, the very next day they're back without me doing anything!

Mark's spirit of sharing is so remarkable. I'm confident that I can attach myself to his virtual world with no problem whatsoever.

😬

“Ahead of Apples [insert next year here] AR/VR device”

…this is starting to be reminiscent of Gene Munsters prediction that an Apple TV set would come out the following year. He ran that research note for 4 years straight.
I don’t believe it’s like that.

Apple never publicly said they had interest in making a TV. And while Gene was wrong about the TV, Apple was clearly releasing TV-adjacent products and no doubt explored making a TV.

Tim has said multiple times publicly that AR is “very interesting,” which is as close as you are gonna get to “Apple is developing an AR/VR device.”

There’s also been references to rOS (Reality OS) in iOS betas, and supply chain leaks about the optics.

So yeah, Apple is gonna come out with an AR/VR device, and it won’t be four years from now, but likely within one.

Meta verse now is too much in infancy and not really ready for mainstream. That being said, new devices such as these are progress and that’s what’s important. Will I buy it? No. Will it advance the technology towards desired goal state? We can hope.
Remember all the hoopla about 3D tv a few years ago?
This all over again.

I guess you aren’t aware of what iCloud+ does.

Please go look it up. The expanded privacy features are not free. They cost at a minimum, $0.99/month.

Privacy as state by Apple is a ‘human right‘. To charge for a human right is one of the most embarrassing and disgusting things I’ve ever heard of.

I can't get over how stupid this looks. It might not look out of place on a fighter pilot, but could you imagine a receptionist wearing one at your doctor's office? Or on a train? Could you see your mom learning how to wear it and choosing to?

The expected look of the Apple AR/VR goggles on the other hand do look as weird as wearing ski goggles, but I can imaging walking into an office and being served by a receptionist who is wearing them, maybe she takes them off while talking to people in person though but maybe customers would appreciate staff being able to bring up info in the AR system while talking to them.

Who knows how society will adjust to this kind of thing, we can only guess. If automation gets rid of a lot of jobs then we might find people crave dealing with other people and seeing their real faces react. But one thing for sure is no one wants to deal with someone or be seen wearing something that looks like a HUD from Top Gun mixed with Nintendo Wii controls. It's pretty obvious that Meta is still targeting hardcore gamers and isn't really interested in a mass market product, at least not yet anyway. Maybe this is all just beta testing for the true mainstream goggle/glasses that Meta is working on behind the scenes.
