This is no different than any phone that Apple or any other manufacturer releases every year. If you don't put a screen protector on, you will get micro scratches on the oleophobic coating. It was the same last year, and the year before that and the year before that, and so on. If you don't like looking at them a screen protector will hide them and also prevent you from getting any more on your screen.

I had micro scratches with my X even when my phone was in my purse in its own separate pouch. Even with AppleCare+, Apple would not replace the screen. Now I have screen protectors on my iPhones.

This happened to me the same day I got the phone. With toothpaste work? Also are they gonna break chips when brining it back for when the year is up?

In my case this XS is defective but I’m praying Verizon doesn’t give me an issue with this very small light scratch. But I wanna buff it out but that’s after the screen protector comes off and goes in the box straight to the store.

Any ideas or suggestions?

As soon as u bought my iPhone from sams club I went to the Apple store and bought a screen protector and had them install it for free with their screen protector install tool. No issues so far.
I don’t see a big deal using a screen protector, you can literally change them every month to keep the feel of the screen fresh folks.
Even if I have Apple care I rather protect it against scratches by putting a simple screen protector. I didn’t want to go a day without screen protectors.
I have ocd and I cannot stand scratches on my screen. I don’t mind getting scratches on the screen protector since I know the most important part is undamaged.

With that said. I am disappointed at Apple on how piss poor of a job they have done as of late, their screens scratch way too easily. I think the material quality has been going down since the iPhone 4/4s days. Now that’s what I can a true premium phone.
Wild how many people with OCD find their way to this forum. With a sample from this community, it'd be safe to say that over 50% of the population suffers.

Anyway. The quality hasn't gone down, the hardness has. Would you rather have a scratched screen or a shattered screen?

Edit: Well ain't I the hypocrite? Should have finished reading before responding as somebody beat me to it.

How do you get microscratches though? Is it just from being in your pocket?

A lot of things can cause this. If you use the phone in your pocket, there is debris inside your pocket that you can’t physically even see that can rub up against the display and scratch the oleophobic coating. Even remnants on your fingers that you can’t see can scratch the display, and usually you can only see these micro scratches under direct light in certain angles.

Latest gorilla glasses are softer (more scratch prone) but less prone to shattering. Ultimately it’s going to happen either way, best to just use it and enjoy it and not worry - you won’t care at all in a years time :)

Micro scratches do not effect your viewing. If it's an angle thing with light and the screen off. Who cares. Enjoy tht phone

Any kind of screen protector won't fit a TPU Gel case unless there's a super thin one and I would really not trust a fall on either sides. So im curious what kind of cases people in here use that fit the screen glass.

I have a tiny tiny one after less than 24 hours but you can’t even feel it with a finger nail. I’m not worried about it. You can’t avoid them. One small piece of sand or similar in your pocket is all it takes.

I don’t do screen protectors or cases because I hate them. They feel weird and add bulk. I also don’t see the need to protect my device so someone else can buy it from me to enjoy the screen. It’s like putting plastic on your couch so someone else can buy it one day and feel how soft the fabric is.

I buy AppleCare and of they get too bad, I just pay the small fee to have the screen replaced.

Nope it's not that the next person can enjoy it, it's called price preservation. A mobile in pristine condition will bring more money when you sell it. Plus I can't live with scratches on my screen. It would make crazy. I would keep looking at the scratch and only the scratch. But i understand that you want to use your mobile as it was designed to be used. Till the day comes where they are able to give us sapphire crystal displays who are really scratch proof I will be using screen protectors.

My screen is fine (touch wood) but I do have a minor mark on the back and have no idea how. I too am super careful and my X and S9 plus are both immaculate after months of use (caseless)

I use a Ringke case with a screen protector... works just fine.
It might not be the most robust fall protection, but I feel it will at least cushion it some in the event of a fall.

Since the 7plus, I've noticed the oleophobic coating is too soft so there's no other choice than to use a screen protector if you're bothered by it.

The iCarez full coverage protectors are virtually undetectable when installed correctly. The new tray system they use to align it makes it super easy.

Anyone know of a way to buff these out? Not sure if it’s an option.

I agree. I’m talking about real tiny scratches that are really only noticeable in the right bright light.

There’s no way of buffing out those minor scratches.

The problem is Apple make this super-strong glass then cover it in a really thin and easily scratched oleophobic coating.

As for using Apple Care to replace your screen if it gets scratched up .... are you sure about this? I asked about this and was told that scratches on the screen are considered wear and tear and they wouldn't allow you to replace a scratched screen under the plan. It may be different in the UK, but you wouldn't think so.
Its not the coating.

The XS just scratches just as easily as the X, 8 and the 7 before it.
"Super hard" glass meh, marketing spiel.
But the "harder" the glass more scratch prone it is and here we are.
Although Apple claims this year its more scratch resistance, but Jerry rigs test clearly shows its not.

I put an edge-to-edge glass screen protector about 10 seconds after I peeled the plastic off. I always have. I'm a bit particular about trying to keep my phone in perfect condition. Small dings and scratches annoy the crap out of me. Just waiting for lifeproof to release their full-body case for the Xs Max. I sold my X and it looked like the day I bought it.

I'd see if Apple would do anything for you. So much for the "strongest glass ever on a smart phone".

This is not absolutely true! My iPhone 7+ after 2 years didn't have any scratches on the screen.

In the first week using iPhone XS Max I have SEVERAL (2-3 big ones, up to 10-20 total) different very sharp / narrow microscratches from very basic use. How the hell is this so poor compared to the previous iPhones (atleast 7) ?!?

Just like the X last year, the screens on the Xs and Max are noticeably more susceptible to minor scratches vs the older models.

Based on what evidence? A tech forum? I can honestly say I have no micro scratches whatsoever on my display, and no, I don’t utilize a screen protector either. There are Way too many variables to know exactly how someone treats their phone without specifically seeing it.
