Based on what evidence? A tech forum? I can honestly say I have no micro scratches whatsoever on my display, and no, I don’t utilize a screen protector either. There are Way too many variables to know exactly how someone treats their phone without specifically seeing it.

You know, it is partially from tech forums like this one. But I take that as a broad survey of what everyone else is experiencing. The real evidence i used to form my personal opinion is my own use. I've had every iPhone since the original 2g. I haven't changed the way i carry my phone much. I take great care to make sure it's in my pocket without other items. I can definitively say in my own use that the X and new Xs phones are more scratch prone than the 7 and 8. Once again, in my own personal use, i've watched as the scratch resistance has improved since the first iphone through the 8, with a note that the 7 and 8 were pretty much the same. I also have carried 2 iPhones, one work and one personal, for the past 4 years. Last year i carried an 8 and X. Both phones carried in a similar matter with about the same use. By the time I turned in my X for an Xs, several small scratches were apparent where my 8 is still perfect.

My experience is just that, mine alone. But there are other threads from last year when the X came out with the same issue.... and here we are today on an Xs thread. Look for threads about the 7 or 8 and there are far less reports than the X and Xs. Some speculate that it has to do with the type of glass they moved to for OLED support or a change in the coating. Who knows what the cause may be. But in my own use, the X and Xs are less resistant, dare I say far less resistant, to scratches than the 7 and 8.

No micro scratches at all for me and had it since Day 1. I just recently told myself how the Xs Max has a more durable screen then any of my previous iPhones.

I had my xs max for 3 hours and had already acquired a bunch. I’m a bit annoyed, considering how careful I am with my phones and the total time I’ve have had it.

What I’m having most difficulty with is the edges of the metal on the right and left of the screen. Compared to my X, those metal edges on the Xs max are sharp feeling and catch my finger pads easily when running them over the screen.

Can u elaborate? Like what exactly is sharp here?

I think that member plenty elaborated on their post if you read it again. They are referring to the stainless edges on the side of the phones along the display feel sharp, there has also been at least three other threads on this discussing it. Apple will make an exchange for the issue.

I used to worry about micro scratches and the whole screen burn in risk at full brightness, but since I have annual upgrades, why bother? Just don’t destroy your phone like crack your screen, etc and you’ll be fine.

Plan on keeping the phone, invest in a screen protector.

Just my opinion.

Well dang. Is this a problem for the X?

I can’t feel mine bc of a case

I have a few micro scratches, but my Xs Max slipped out of my pocket when I was on the floor playing with my kids, and I now have 2-3 scratches that are pretty much always visible and you can feel them with a fingernail. The phone "fell" about 8 inches onto the wood floor, but that was enough to do it. I do think that these screens are harder and harder to break, but easier and easier to scratch.

I've had like 9 smartphones, six of which have been iPhones, and I've never broken or cracked a screen, nor have I scratched them a ton. If these get worse, I may try to pay the screen replacement fee on Applecare+. I hate cases and screen protectors, so it's the risk I run, but this screen is striking me as more sensitive than iPhones past.

I noticed a scratch on my XS Max screen before returning it for other reasons. It was in an Apple silicone case the whole time I had it, never dropped, always alone in my pocket. (no keys or other stuff that could've scratched it...)

It seemed to be in the oleophobic coating, as I couldn't feel anything when going over it with my finger. Just another disappointment with the Max!

Same problem as me. Not even 2 days and I have already found scratches on it. Never dropped and always paid attention to the screen.

Did they have to change your phone for other reasons or is it possible to have it changed as well for these scratches under warranty?
To me, it looks like a problem with the coating other than me ruining it.

I use a screen protector on my XS. Best 7€ I ever spent.

I just dropped my phone when picking it up from a table and the screen protector is toast while the phone's screen is intact.

This would have not ended well without a screen protector.

Anyone getting really small micro scratches on their screen? My iPhones usually do but surprised I have so many after just a week of use. I’m really careful with my phone too. Granted, this is only visible under a bright light or spotlight but don’t know how they got there so quick. Anybody else noticed this?

Those are almost entirely likely to be a result of scratches in the oleophobic coating; not the glass. Oleophobic coatings are soft and rub off with use as it is.

I wouldn't worry about it. It happens. If it bothers you, buy a screen protector to cover the glass and you won't be able to see them any longer.

I agree. The screen on these iPhones feels perfect. Adding plastic or more glass ruins the experience IMO...for me.

8+ here and I have several micro-scratches in the oleophobic coating. I also have a tiny TINY nick in the top right corner of glass. Also just found a small scratch at the very top of screen. None in viewing area.

The beauty is I gave up caring/obsessing over them. It feels wonderful.

Hate to burst your bubble just went in to Cumberland mall apple store they will replace scratched screen under apple care

Best bet is to buy a good glass screen protector, If the oleophobic coating wears off on the screen protector you can get a replacement from th company that manufactured it.
Gorilla Glass is known to scratch and this year is no different

[doublepost=1546059933][/doublepost]Yes, I am on my second Xs max. I noticed the first three days after purchase. I keep my phone in a holster and the screen is never exposed and on my belt, never in my pocket. I have had every iPhone since the 3GS and never a scratch or blemish. Verizon had me take the phone to an apple store to certify it was not an impact scratch, and apple did. I had one small scratch in the bottom center of the screen. Verizon replaced the phone and now I have two small scratches in the same area. Note, that is the area where I swipe up, so most likely is the coating. This should not happen to a phone costing $1449.00.

I don’t see any micro scratches. My phone always has its own pocket though.

That’s because you’re not looking for the scratches, and realistically, it’s better that way. Displays are touched and use on a daily basis, any overtime will accrue scratches, but I don’t find value in screen protectors adding to the iPhone experience personally.

I hate screen protectors and haven’t used them in years. I probably have micro scratches, but I can’t see them and don’t go searching for them. I’d rather enjoy my phone and not worry about it.

I’ve used Anker tempered glass screen protectors on my last three phones. 6+, 6s+, 8+. I got one again for my Xs Max. I like not having to worry about my screen. They usually last me a year and for $9 come in a two pack so covered for the life of my phone. Sold back to apple in perfect condition. Sena leather wallet case and an Anker glass screen protector. Phone like new after 2 years.

I had to use my Xs Max for a few weeks while Anker fixed their tempered glass protector. No scratches. Micro scratches are the coating on the glass and easy to see in sunlight. Doesn’t bother me.

Just use a tempered glass screen protector. Works great and not any concerns.
Better words were never spoken. Apple screens will scratch despite assertions by Apple that this is the " toughest yet". Is it A style requirement that an iPhone screen can't have a tempered glass shield? Get a case and screen shield. Glass is glass.

Not for me, I just don’t like feel of the edges on them. I also don’t use a case, so it’s more prominent. Light scratches don’t bother me at all - I use my phone the way it feels best for me.

I hate using screen protectors and understand I run that risk. I’m really careful but this is a decent amount really early on. More so than other phones.

I dislike the idea of using a screen protector too. But I'm not going to risk scratching the screen. At $1000 price point these devices shouldn't be vulnerable to scratches and being dropped. Maybe by 2022+ the durability will be satisfactory.
