Except....
1. Have to have the tether plan (20$ + month extra)
2. Have to give up unlimited, assuming you are with AT&T

No thanks.

another example of design, over COMMON SENSE function -

It's a microphone - don't you think it belongs facing the front? One may work better than the other, but none will works as well as they should if they'd been placed were they belong.

Same problem with speaker location. :(

Yet it works on the WiFi models? Clearly this is a matter of the build materials.

I gave up my unlimited while waiting on the iPad 2 line. There was some work I needed to get done on my Macbook Pro between 3 and 6 and I was hoping to able to grab the Apple hotspot or Starbucks one, but could not. I changed my mind and grabbed the WiFi only model and couldnt be happier.

I love being able to work from anywhere now and it was more than enough reason to get rid of unlimited Data that I'd never fully use anyway.

Not to mention that the black strip on top of the 3G model looks ugly too, just like the iPhone 1G ;)

I used the Mic to record a story for my son (Thomas and Toby App)...it sounded UBER clear when played back. Heck, it even picked up some very minute ambiance noise (not in a bad way).

I don't believe this either.

Gonna get the 3G model because I don't have an iPhone and I like Internet and GPS everywhere.

The primary mic is just above the camera on the face of the device, the one in question is the noise-cancellation mic (I confirmed this with an Apple rep).

I am surprised to discover that "acoustical" (as in 'acoustical properties') is actually a word, when 'acoustic properties' works just as well and doesn't sound semi-retarded. (To me it feels like saying 'colourific' instead of 'colourful'.)

Just a thought. You may now resume your discussion about microphones.

Gosh I guess I wont record my next album with the built-in mic on my iPad. This is a non issue folks. None of the built-in mics on any mobile device are going to sound that good or that bad.

WADR, I understand that you want to use your phone for hot-spotting or what have you, but how does this make $en$e in the long run? I don't know, every time I do the maths for this scenario it always seems cheaper to buy the 3G iPad (inclusive of the $130 premium) - assuming you (or anyone else) are on the unlimited plan already. To go from unlimited to having to tether/hotspotting from the phone equals getting less for more $$. But this conversation is probably for another thread.

I was going to post this as well - on the white model you can actually see the mic above the camera (or at least the grill). At first, I kept thinking I had gotten a mark on the white bezel. When I finally closely examined it, I noticed that it was a bunch of tiny dots - much like the speaker grill on the bottom. This may not be noticeable at all on the black model, but it is there.

That is the light sensor

Yeah, you can see it on the black one as well (photo attached). According to the mac tech it is not the ambient light sensor it is the primary mic with the one on the back being used for noise-cancellation, just like the mic next to the headphone jack on the iPhone 4. Try covering the rear mic and recording something, you'll find that the audio is processed through the front mic.

Somehow I don't think a mic covered in glass would sound that great, I could be wrong though.

well just for the record, my current iPad is wifi only that im selling... so unless AT&T brings back the unlimited option, I'll never have unlimited data even with with AT&T...

plus the cost its actually cheaper to tether...
Tethering: $20 extra plus 2gb more
iPad 3G: $25 for 2gb

That is the light sensor

Really? If I put my thumb over it should the brightness on my screen change - because it doesn't? I had heard there was a light sensor - what is its purpose? I have opened a few apps and put my thumb over the sensor, and I don't see any kind of change.
