YOu make it sound like people knowing about design differences is a bad thing? Given the Camera was one of the big selling points of the iPad 2, and thus the microphone is important also for use with Facetime, then it is a bit of a big deal even if the difference proves to be somewhat negligible in real world use.

Of the expected

40,000,000 to be sold, most likely
39,999,000 will have no issues with it.

That's 0.000025 %

I hope the 1,000 who do have an issue with it include MacRumors complainers. If not, it would raise the "failure" rate considerably.

yea, where would you put the microphone and speaker(s) in the front? right next to the camera so it looks more like a giant iPhone4?

I can't imagine any reason to put avoid putting the mic on the front, asside from the fact that you think it might look more like an iPhone.

No problems here...

According to this article I have the worst possible iPad model for recording audio, a CDMA iPad 2, but I can personaly testify that the mic works great.

I never noticed any issues with the mic, but after reading this article I downloaded a voice memo recording app, "AudioMemos" (the free version), and recorded a few test memos. My voice came out very crisp and clear with absolutely zero issues. To be honest, I thought it sounded way better than I would ever expect from a tiny built in mic. If I hadn't personally recorded the memos and someone told me that they were recorded with a dedicated external mic, I wouldn't hesitate to believe them.

For the record, I'm not any kind of "Apple defender", and I wouldn't mind pointing out any flaws in my iPad - especially considering the iPad 3 will be out so soon. I Just wanted to throw my own 2 cents into the discussion.

I was going to post this as well - on the white model you can actually see the mic above the camera (or at least the grill). At first, I kept thinking I had gotten a mark on the white bezel. When I finally closely examined it, I noticed that it was a bunch of tiny dots - much like the speaker grill on the bottom. This may not be noticeable at all on the black model, but it is there.
That's the ambient light sensor LOL
