Microphone Differences Found Between Wi-Fi and 3G iPad 2 Models

Gosh I guess I wont record my next album with the built-in mic on my iPad. This is a non issue folks. None of the built-in mics on any mobile device are going to sound that good or that bad.

Exactly. People need to chill and enjoy their new iDevice.

Somehow I don't think a mic covered in glass would sound that great, I could be wrong though.

When you look at it closely (especially on the white one) it seems to be little tiny holes - just like the speaker grill on the bottom. It is not a solid opening, which is why I thought it was a speaker/mic as opposed to a light sensor. Wouldn't the camera itself be a light sensor - do you need a separate light sensor with a camera?

yea, where would you put the microphone and speaker(s) in the front? right next to the camera so it looks more like a giant iPhone4?

Microphone yes, in the front next to the camera. Why not? It already looks like a giant iPod Touch (until you turn it on) This makes a lot of sense, why not have the microphone on the front? It's not a blank front, you have a button and now a camera on the front. Just add a mic hole or two.

Speaker is another issue, they need to be bigger (not like the speaker on an iPhone which only needs to be loud enough to hear when up against your head)

You need a separate one for two reasons: power consumption and blooming/amp noise. Keeping a camera sensor active increases the heat generation and seriously degrades the image captured.

Unlimited Data + MyWi ftw. ;) :D
<rant>
Yes -- all of us get that folks have jailbroken their iPhones to cheat their carrier out of data. We understand that -- enjoy it.

Some folks might not want to (A) jailbreak their iPhone or (B) dishonestly break the agreement they made with the carrier when they signed up for service ($20 per month is a cheap price to some to maintain one's integrity).

So if you promise not to repeat the same thing other jailbreakers always do (i.e.: "unlimited data + MyWi") whenever a post comes through that offhandedly mentions a contracted tethering plan, then I promise not to respond to every post about jailbroken unlimited tethering with some rant about the carrier owning the network and people abusing their privilege to use it.
</rant>

Sorry I had to get that out of my system -- all better now.

I am surprised to discover that "acoustical" (as in 'acoustical properties') is actually a word, when 'acoustic properties' works just as well and doesn't sound semi-retarded. (To me it feels like saying 'colourific' instead of 'colourful'.)

Just a thought. You may now resume your discussion about microphones.

rofl -- colourific (sounds like something I'd hear in one of my daughter's Tinkerbell movies)

I don't buy that one bit. I have the wifi model and my dad's got the 3g model. His sound doesn't sound any different than when i video call my wife, who's also got the wifi model.

you forgot to wrap that <rant> inside of a <soapbox> tag.

I don't begrudge the jailbreakers one bit. The cell phone industry is ridiculous. They have made us so dependent on mobile service be it voice or data and their prices are higher than any landline service I've ever had to pay for. Granted I didn't have the ability to make calls with the same number no matter where I'm at, or never have to pay a premium for long distance calls again, but that shouldn't give them the right to keep raising my rates meanwhile my salary has been the same for the last 3 years!

Now they've pulled the rug out from under us by discontinuing unlimited data plans, and even tricking people with grandfathered plans into switching to tiered plans, or forcing us to a tiered plan if we want tethering/hotspots. And now we're paying premiums for marketing gimmics. If you're going to charge me for "blazing fast 4g service" make it actual 4g. Don't wrap up crummy 3g service in a 4g moniker. It's highway robbery!

Except....
1. Have to have the tether plan (20$ + month extra)
2. Have to give up unlimited, assuming you are with AT&T

No thanks.

And..
3. Must have a 2 year contract

That is the light sensor

Haven't yet seen or tried an iPad 2, but I do know that ambient light sensors or light sensors of any type do not need a grille. If there is a small grille above the camera like there seems to be, it's obviously an opening for a mic.

I was going to post this as well - on the white model you can actually see the mic above the camera (or at least the grill). At first, I kept thinking I had gotten a mark on the white bezel. When I finally closely examined it, I noticed that it was a bunch of tiny dots - much like the speaker grill on the bottom. This may not be noticeable at all on the black model, but it is there.

No

Yeah, you can see it on the black one as well (photo attached). According to the mac tech it is not the ambient light sensor it is the primary mic with the one on the back being used for noise-cancellation, just like the mic next to the headphone jack on the iPhone 4. Try covering the rear mic and recording something, you'll find that the audio is processed through the front mic.

No

Really? If I put my thumb over it should the brightness on my screen change - because it doesn't? I had heard there was a light sensor - what is its purpose? I have opened a few apps and put my thumb over the sensor, and I don't see any kind of change.

What your seeing in the front is the light sensor. For the sensor to work you need to have the brightness settings set to automatic.

The Mic is on the top of the iPad. It's rather obvious.

Yes they do. Apple has supposedly been fighting with the white iPhone to keep light from bleeding through. Black defintely needs the "grill" as you call it which is actually spots that the paint has been removed to let the light through. I suggest you read up on opaque. Go read an iPad 2 tear down.

Ummm - I do have Auto-Brightness turned on. So again, if I put my thumb over a light sensor, shouldn't it actually change the brightness on my screen? There is no change.

I don't know what to tell you, other than that is not a mic, and it is indeed the light sensor.

Use it in a dark room, then turn the light on, it works with my iPhone 4 and iPad 2.

I don't have an iPad yet but I wonder If the mic is adjustable or most likely auto adjust based on background noise? I'm sure it's a non-issue.

I am not denying that is a light sensor, I am just not seeing any effect from it. I tried the dark room idea and never saw a difference. Did it with Auto-brightness on and off. Flipping the light on and off never changed a thing. The only time I saw a difference is when I switched the auto-brightness on and off. Great, I go from discussing a mic to thinking I may have a problem with my light sensor!!!

Good luck, NYT.

The newspapers effed the entire publishing industry by giving it all away on the web, and now they want to take it back.
