Except....
1. Have to have the tether plan (20$ + month extra)
2. Have to give up unlimited, assuming you are with AT&T

No thanks.

So you would rather foot the $130 bill AND pay for data on the iPad....No thanks

Am I reading this correctly....some iPad 2's are plastic while others are aluminum? That's what the article implies...if there is something much more descriptive regarding the plastic vs. aluminum, I would love to hear it.

No, they all have aluminum backs but the 3G version has a small plastic strip that runs across the top of iPad to facilitate the radio communications. The wifi only iPads don't have or need this.

I didn't even know there was a microphone on the ipad/2.

Agreed. Though I suppose that I would want want if I found out that there wasnt. This is just an example of a blog looking for hits. Nobody would know about this had this not been "published".

How does one fully use something that is unlimited? :D

Well, I'd say it's when you start using more data than the equivalent cost of the next data plan down plus overage charges.

But in my head I'm really picturing someone opening 300 tabs, grinning maniacally, and going "I want all of the internets! All of them!!!!"

I wish there'd be more independent testing on this. It's simply too little to just have iLounge report on this. There need to be a better sample size here for me to draw any sort of conclusions. Also, it's impossible to tell the actual difference here without a high quality demo clip. I have no idea if iLounge staff has been nitpicking or not. Especially finding differences between the GSM and CDMA models seem more than strange, and venturing into imagination territory. I don't know any technical detail that would cause a difference there. They're both using plastic.

True, a larger sample size would be more accurate.

Not enough info in the iLounge test to get excited/depressed about.

Facetime with mom

Got my mom a 3G Verizon iPad2. Have used Facetime. Have used Talkatone.

Works fine.

Sounds fine.

Maybe a wifi model sounds AMAZING, but her iPad 2 sounds no different than my iPad 1.

you forgot to wrap that <rant> inside of a <soapbox> tag.

I don't begrudge the jailbreakers one bit. The cell phone industry is ridiculous. They have made us so dependent on mobile service be it voice or data and their prices are higher than any landline service I've ever had to pay for. Granted I didn't have the ability to make calls with the same number no matter where I'm at, or never have to pay a premium for long distance calls again, but that shouldn't give them the right to keep raising my rates meanwhile my salary has been the same for the last 3 years!

Now they've pulled the rug out from under us by discontinuing unlimited data plans, and even tricking people with grandfathered plans into switching to tiered plans, or forcing us to a tiered plan if we want tethering/hotspots. And now we're paying premiums for marketing gimmics. If you're going to charge me for "blazing fast 4g service" make it actual 4g. Don't wrap up crummy 3g service in a 4g moniker. It's highway robbery!

</rant> </soapbox>

You are correct -- I forgot the <soapbox> tag.

I was going to post this as well - on the white model you can actually see the mic above the camera (or at least the grill). At first, I kept thinking I had gotten a mark on the white bezel. When I finally closely examined it, I noticed that it was a bunch of tiny dots - much like the speaker grill on the bottom. This may not be noticeable at all on the black model, but it is there.

If you're implying that these "tiny dots" are actually small holes in the screen and not under it, which sounds like you are, then I'll gladly tell you that its very, very unlikely.

From a structural engineering standpoint it would be stupid on Apple's part to have holes in their one piece of glass, because that would sacrifice a great amount of the screen's strength. Apple might have a little antenna problem here and some other problem there, but they would never make the mistake of cutting through their screens no matter how small these "holes" are.

But probably an easier way to convince you that it is impossible that they have a cancelation microphone, is the fact that Steve Jobs wouldn't just "forget" to mention that.

How do u explain the home button and all the holes on the iPhone 4 front glass which is still more durable then the back with less/smaller holes..... With that said I don't have an IPad but front mic would make sence

Because the home button and the ear phone are too big holes that aren't close to each other, and that is a whole lot better than many tiny holes next to each other. Kind of like a real glass of water, when it breaks and it loses a piece of glass on the tip of it, its still relatively durable, but if its cracked then its much easier for it to break with less force.

I am surprised to discover that "acoustical" (as in 'acoustical properties') is actually a word, when 'acoustic properties' works just as well and doesn't sound semi-retarded. (To me it feels like saying 'colourific' instead of 'colourful'.)

Just a thought. You may now resume your discussion about microphones.

Your comic comments are comical.

We couldn't go one day without a rumor(or whatever) about the ipad/iphone could we.

THIS JUST IN-ipads can smash tomatoes when proper force is applied.

I don't know what to tell you, other than that is not a mic, and it is indeed the light sensor.
Use it in a dark room, then turn the light on, it works with my iPhone 4 and iPad 2.

Yup, this is the way it works, but there can be a delay. On MacBooks the ambient light sensor affects the display rather quickly, but on an iPod touch, I've noticed, it might take some time for it to realize the amount of ambient light. So everyone, don't worry if your light sensor doesn't work right away, it might take a while. Again, I've never used an iPad 2, so I don't know if its ambient light sensor works any faster than an iPod touch's.

Yes they do. Apple has supposedly been fighting with the white iPhone to keep light from bleeding through. Black defintely needs the "grill" as you call it which is actually spots that the paint has been removed to let the light through. I suggest you read up on opaque. Go read an iPad 2 tear down.

Excuse me if I did not explain myself well enough. By grille, I meant a grid of small holes in the glass, just as in, say, a speaker grille (like the one for the speaker, small holes in aluminium). Light can go through glass, unlike sound, which would be muffled, unless there were holes in the glass. It indeed seems to be a light sensor, looking at the pictures from the iFixit teardown. Nevertheless, the dots over the camera are not a grille by my definition. As you said, the paint needs to be removed to let the light through, you are absolutely right. What's odd is that it looks just like there were holes drilled into the glass. On an iPod touch as far as I can tell, there is an ambient light sensor in the front of the device but it doesn't need these dots in the paint. Maybe it's one bigger hole in the paint, maybe the glass isn't painted like on an iPad, I don't know, but it's not important anyway.

On a sidenote, I know what opaque is, no need to read up on it. I've studied some optics in university, so I know the basics... Just never saw an iPad or a detailed teardown before.

True, mostly. Although I'm quite sure a 2-3 mm diameter area of small holes isn't enough to hamper the structural integrity of the whole glass. Maybe the grill might break if pushed hard with a sharp object, but highly unlikely. Of course, less holes is better.

YOu make it sound like people knowing about design differences is a bad thing? Given the Camera was one of the big selling points of the iPad 2, and thus the microphone is important also for use with Facetime, then it is a bit of a big deal even if the difference proves to be somewhat negligible in real world use.
