The success of these tablets will depend upon how well windows 8 is adopted.

The pro tablet looks nice, but I'd rather get an ultrabook.

Windows XP was adopted pretty well and PC based tablets still got dunked in potty water. The success of the OS doesn't ensure success of the device...

I would totally bet AGAINST microsoft. Just look at their failing history patterns. Nothing they do is innovative, creative, or original. Why not just rename your business, "Copysoft"

Not bad being copycats considering that the lowly Vista sold more copies than Apple has sold computers since the company was founded.

It actually has some aesthetic sensibility. Microsoft is learning a little.

HOW??? because it's a tablet and anything that's a tablet is an iPad knockoff?

but they didn't. is that hard to swallow? instead of bashing this new Microsoft tablet and then saying you with Apple had the innovation to come out with a folding smart cover keyboard, how about you take a step back from your iPad and realize what you are saying.

look man, i have an iPad 2...i love it. but these new Microsoft tablets look sick, and as said that's coming from an iPad user

Look, the MS tablet has the same design as the iPad and a cover with magnets exactly like the Smart Cover except for the keyboard.

I know that Apple didn't put the keyboard on their Smart Cover. I'm just complaining that they didn't. That's one of the main reasons I will not buy an iPad. The lack of a good keyboard makes it useless for me.

Just because you're for Apple doesn't mean I'd automatically think what you said makes sense. And I do remain unconvinced that the 7 inch market is necessary as people currently envision it (mainly being how Android is going about it). If Apple does 7 inch they'll do it on their own terms (just like how you can argue that the Macbook Air 11 inch is really a high end netbook).

How many iPads do you see in the wild? I see more 7" tablets. Luckily both Wall Street and Apple knows a smaller form factor does indeed make sense. Maybe if you were a shareholder or an investor remotely worth their salt you would understand this. Regardless, my hope is this Surface will push Apple to ramp up their competiveness yet even further, whether it be different tablet form factors, or laptops. My money is definitely on Apple moving forward, though naturally as a Apple shareholder/Trader this thing will present problems in the interim, IMO.

Did Microsoft just take a large Cleveland steamer on the chest of any other third party manufacturer considering bringing a Windows 8 tablet to market?

Yeah I wonder what Dell, HP, Lenovo, Samsung etc think about this. The pricing and specs in comparison to other OEM's tablets/Ultrabooks will be interesting.

I'm more than happy with my iPad 2, but this looks interesting. There are still a bunch of unknowns like battery life, build quality, reliability and of course price.

Again, I applaud Microsoft for going their own direction rather that simply copying what Apple has done.

In short, it looks not bad. Let's see some shipping units and then we can talk.

About freaking time iPad gets some competition, because frankly all Android tablets except for Transformer sort of fade away rather quickly. Knowing Microsoft, pricing should be good. This should force Apple to get off their ass and create something else. I however, will wait for an offering from Nokia before making final decision.

The fact that people bought Vista shows the general stupidity surrounding computers. Vista was worse than 98 except that it was more secure.

XP wasn't designed for touch screens. Windows 8 actively forces people to touch the screen, trackpads and mice are second class citizens (no gestures). I would not compare XP with 8. They're focused on two completely different markets.

I was gonna say the same thing, LOTTA PRO-MICROSOFT COMMENTS regarding a product with NO SPECS, NO PRICE, or AVAILABILITY..

Something fishy is going on...

Regarding the product.. Its about content and interface.. Not some stupid ****ing keyboard cover.. This has zune and kin one's fate written all over it!

Funny how so many people are apparently going to rush out and buy it despite the fact that as you say there is no price, specs or availability yet and no initial reviews of it. Very fishy.

Apparently people are going to buy it because it has a kickstand (oh dear), fancy case, portable keyboard (it gets worse), or coz it has a USB port. They're all missing the important issues like is the screen any good, how zippy or clunky is the UI, weight, battery life, software/apps available, etc.

Oh and the fact that you can only drag and drop your way in the tablet without using Itunes and having to sync everything will be very refreshing. That have always bugged me on Apple products.

you seriously need to own an iPad. The iPad is in it's own class. It's not meant to replace anything laptop/desktop wise. That's why it sells so well.

If you are looking for a frankenstein mess, you will buy this device. The biggest issue is the multi-tasking multi-everything on these tablets. It just doesn't work well enough.

Frankenstein mess. :) that's funny and sums up my sentiment for the damn thing.

Wait a minute. MS has been telling us for years that tablets run full Windows and use a pen for input. They've also said that the innovation you get from having hundreds of partners making hardware was the vastly superior model to Apple's we-do-it-all approach.

Now this?

Hate to sound like the fanboy that I am but I'm honestly tired of MS copying what Apple does 5 years later.

The only comparison I'm making is that the success of an OS doesn't necessarily equate to the success of any one particular piece of hardware... Windows 8 included...

I don't think that's hard to swallow at all. Android has failed to take the bull by the horns in the tablet world and has left the second place door open for sure. I still don't see a lot of margin in these though. Companies are in business to make money people...and Apple will certainly continue to do so at a greater pace than anyone else in the industry if this is all of the "innovation" their greatest supposed "competition" can muster...

Unlike most here, I care more about myself than how much profit a company that I buy products from makes. If someone turns out a good product, I don't care if they make $10 on it. I want a good product. Only on a Apple forum does a consumer consider a companies profit to be most important.

I'm in the academic science community. People are still mostly using laptops. But of the tablets I see, I've seen exactly one non-iOS tablet (I believe it is Android) and the rest are iPads of one sort or another. Most of them are iPad 2 or 3s (hard to tell).

I do see e-ink Kindles now and then but that is only when I'm on a bus (and I wouldn't be using an iPad on a bus).

As far as your personal attack against me. I suggest you calm down and take a step back. Just because I don't agree with your opinion doesn't mean you should attack me. Restating your opinion followed by a personal attack is not useful in any way. It does not educate anyone other than your current maturity level.

The keyboard on the case is much needed. I would never buy an iPad unless I could get a foldable keyboard for it.

But you are right about the rest of the stuff. This looks horrible, and it's no surprise that Microsoft would make such trash. They can't even make a modern web browser better than Netscape.
