The fact that people bought Vista shows the general stupidity surrounding computers. Vista was worse than 98 except that it was more secure.

I didn't think a high school student would be familiar with Windows 98. How much experience did you have with Vista? So people who buy Macs but know nothing about them are intelligent?

Look, the MS tablet has the same design as the iPad and a cover with magnets exactly like the Smart Cover except for the keyboard.

I know that Apple didn't put the keyboard on their Smart Cover. I'm just complaining that they didn't. That's one of the main reasons I will not buy an iPad. The lack of a good keyboard makes it useless for me.

Go to Brookstone and you will find many case/keyboard combos. I use the Apple BT keyboard and it works great. Stop trolling.

Unlike most here, I care more about myself than how much profit a company that I buy products from makes. If someone turns out a good product, I don't care if they make $10 on it. I want a good product. Only on a Apple forum does a consumer consider a companies profit to be most important.

If you actually owned any stock in AAPL, you will say otherwise. ;):D

This aspect still bothers me.

Uh, no. I'd be saying, "Apple, you ignorant slut. You get rid of the efficient and effective on screen keyboard for an external?" This Windows tablet MUST have a virtual keyboard. How limiting that would be for mobility sake.

"The video! It does nothing for my eyes!"
And yet there are a tons of external keyboards for the iPad. Microsoft isn't telling you to use a keyboard. They are offering an optional keyboard in addition to the virtual keyboard. ALMOST exactly as Apple, except Apple relies on third-party for the keyboards.

If you don't want external keyboard, the simple solution, DON'T use it.

Surface headed down the old Zune path

I watched the presentation and found it—and this tablet—singularly unimpressive. I think Zune had better move over and make room for Surface in the trash bin.

They are intelligent enough if they don't use anything microsoft windows. Mac buyers are in the upper class majority and will pay to use something that isn't microsoft windows.

If you value your time, friends and family, and money in life, you should never use anything microsoft windows.

After seeing Balmer on stage with his feet pointing in opposite directions with that goofy face, I just can't take Microsoft seriously. Even Tim Cook can laugh at SB.

Having bought several of every tablet on the market since day 1 of MS's TabletPC disaster, I agree, compared to windows-based tablets of before, this is as close to a direct copy of an iPad as possible.

However, I love the iPads form. So the thought of getting to run CAE software (hopefully) on (essentially) an iPad, is incredibly exciting. If MS doesn't totally screw the pooch with Win8, I'll be buying these to compliment our iPads. Win for proprietary engineering software, iOS for everything else.

Maybe I'll have some cases made to slip one of these on the Left and an iPad on the Right. Maximized Courier.

Terrible video though.

The only comparison I'm making is that the success of an OS doesn't necessarily equate to the success of any one particular piece of hardware... Windows 8 included...

I know, I'm just saying that Windows 8's success is probably much more connected to the success of tablets than not.

I like Metro but they really used a kludge to cram it in as a Start menu replacement. The complete lack of trackpad gestures makes things like quitting Metro apps all the more absurd.

Competition is always a good thing!

Just wish Microsoft went guns blazing.

A few things I'd change:

-Higher res displays from the get go. Give Apple's Retina a second thought.

-Use Ultra Low Voltage Ivy Bridge CPU's. Performance difference will not be missed on a tablet. It will allow for a much slimmer profile and to drop the vents and fans. Battery life will also increase because of this.

- 3G and 4G ready on both models. So far I haven't read if it comes with either cellular tech's or if either model will have them.

I do commend Microsoft for this, and I really hope from now onwards, they pick up their act and really publicize and market Windows 8, Surface and Windows Phone 8. Now is the time to really up the game.

You my friend, are smarter than most people here on MR.

I heard the EXACT same thing against the iPod touch when the ZUNE HD was unveiled. It ended up being in the dumpster faster than left over pizza.

another copy cat...
In what ways do you feel this is a copy cat? I would rather people express their opinions that's substantiated, even if it's your opinions, rather than "this sucks". It adds nothing of value to the discussion, other than to incite.

 No wonder why people think the things they do about Apple users. It's statements like this.

I should have added that. I knew someone would reply as you did. And you are absolutely correct.

When all else fails, Apple's profit is the standard attempt at a trump line.

MS stock rose a whopping 25 cents in after market trading. They broke through the $30 barrier. This device is epic!!

This is the beginning of the end for the iPad and Apple.

It's certainly the beginning of the end of the current iPad, same as the iPad 1 was sent to it's well deserved retirement.

It's obvious that Apple would lose market share in the iPad. They started with a market share of 100% and are now down to what? 65%? However, they lose market share and increase sales.

Yes, because the orientation of his feet have something to do with the products. It's always interesting when Apple lovers lose a few million brain cells whenever a competing product is introduced.

It's about time! Microsoft is back in the game. We all love Office. And even those of us that are now Mac users, most businesses still use PC's. It is about time Microsoft fights to put out new technology. I hope this launches Microsoft branded laptops, manufactured by Microsoft. I still will keep my Mac. But, it would be nice to have a suitable 2nd choice. Google products suck. Tablets are a joke, phones are awkward and make me not even want to use an app. And gmail looks ancient, gets major spam. Phone has spyware and malware already, probably due to being open source. Amazon Fire version probably one of the best. But, still does not compare with iPad. I hope Microsoft surpasses Google, Samsung, and Blackberry. Apple is still #1 in my book. But, since Windows 7, I don't hate Microsoft anymore. The competition will be good for Apple. If Microsoft does not get rid of this project a year from now.

Who the hell throws away left over pizza? Not this guy.

I love my iPad more an any other gadget I own, but I'm really hoping this goes well for some good competition. I'm guessing the keyboard is going to have a lot to be desired considering they didn't even let people test it. Apple usually has their goods rock solid for a performance during their unveiling... Whatever. I had more to say, but I really hate typing longer than a sentence on my iPad. So please come through with this keyboard MS!

I'm amazed at all the windows fanboys on here.

This machine is nothing what I desire a tablet for. I need something to sit back on the couch with and read a book or surf the internet. I don't need or want a seperate keyboard.

I use a tablet to RELAX - not do any intensive work. I don't get this product at all.
And you can do EXACTLY what you just described. All of the other add-on are accessories much like an iPad. I don't understand your logic.

There's NOTHING here that forces you to use a cover OR a keyboard. It's ALL optional.
