Microsoft thinks they can come out and just dominate with these tablets. The reality is they are not going to win if they think this way - usb ports, low resolution screen, 2lb weight (for the pro) isn't going to appeal to iPad buyers but when people see cheaper android tablets, they are going to get those instead.

They seem to be trying the XBox strategy. Stick with it and keep on dumping money into it until it succeeds. It just might work. On the other hand, it might also sink the company. I think they will succeed, if nothing more because of their enterprise support. That said, I also think that iPad has established Apple as a true player.

What a total joke microsoft is...

Balmer: "We believe that any intersection between human and machine can be made better when hardware and software are considered together."

Well Windows definitely follows THAT reasoning

Ballmer is such a fool. Have you heard his speeches? It sounds like he drank 10 cans of Pepsi Max (caffeine AND irritating, bad flavor) then took some drugs then ate a few cups of sugar with hotsauce poured on top. On top of that, he probably had to pee badly from drinking 10 cans of Pepsi Max, making him jump around even more. The result is a man who looks like he found $9999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 on the ground.

I think this is why Microsoft created two versions. One that weights almost the same as the current iPad is just tiny bit thinner. The other is for people who wants maximum compatibility for other trade-offs (weight, thickness, & battery life). I would lean toward the lighter version, because weight is very important to me.

They need to price the RT model way below even android's asking price. You should note that google is not sitting around letting Microsoft in on the pie. Even if it is the same weight as an iPad, you must not forget it doesn't run any x86 apps. It's a whole new world if you get into this tablet and what is offered in both iOS/android markets, that's extremely tough for microsoft to gain any traction with attracting new users.

If they target the corps with their pro line, I don't know because I don't know anything about $ in the corp world. But i do know consumers > corporations. It's just really going to be tough if they are going to price it as much as an iPad. Even if it does offer more technical hardware.

I had no issues going for 10.5 to 10.6. Of course, if you keep trying to run old software and drivers that are not meant to run with a new OS version, then you'll definitely run into problems.

I had a beach ball of death trying to install 10.6 over 10.5. I have the MacMini2,1. I like it because I can tinker with it and upgrade it.

Windows 7 was launched on October 22, 2009, about 2.5 years from now, but it didn't get widely adopted in the Enterprise until very recently.
Here's one link, if you want more, google ot yourself:
http://thenextweb.com/microsoft/201...nce-despite-windows-8-looming-on-the-horizon/

Now, compare it to how long Windows XP has been the promary Windows choice for over 10 years. Microsoft had to pressure Windows XP users to upgrade:

I hope the above answers your questions. Sorry but I am no longer wasting my time trying to make you reason. Before you rush a senseless comment, use your brain or find facts. If you can't come up to my level to rationally discuss something, don't bother; talk to someone else.

That's what I said, nearly 3 years

It doesn't answer my question because that's not what you said. You said that it just came out "the other day" you didn't say or imply in the least about enterprise. And why would you? That has absolutely nothing to do with what our conversation was about.

Try and keep your story straight (and honest) so you don't have to change it.

It's good you're not wasting your time anymore. Why would you on failed arguments anyway?

What a total joke microsoft is...

Balmer: "We believe that any intersection between human and machine can be made better when hardware and software are considered together."

Amazing so we'll put out our next version of our OS that is basically incompatible with desktops and then follow it up with two different tablets?

I don't care if the vent is PC-like. There are some realistic and non-aesthetic problems with having a vent on a device you carry around so much, though.
Here's what the vent looks like: http://www.wired.com/images_blogs/gadgetlab/2012/06/MicrosoftEvent15.jpg

It's almost impossible to accidentally to cover it, but one has to wonder how it'll work under a blanket. Or if it's turned on while in a backpack. I think the processor will automatically clocks itself down, and worst-case turn itself off.

This is why I would rather get the thinner, lighter, and without vent version - the Windows RT.

I'd find this product much more interesting (regardless of price) if it came with a set of Ginsue knives and maybe a cheese grater attached to the back. It would also be nice to know if the glass were tempered as I think it could serve as a rather elegant hot plate. As with all MS products, I can't help but wonder if it will get hot enough during it's 45 minute run time to melt cheese.

Unlike those cool running iMacs and Macbooks?

This thing will only work if it was cheap. End of question. You can't price this thing more than an iPad and expect it to sell like iPads. Price is the biggest determining factor.

They are in a bad position: unless they figure they can sell at a loss and recoup later with apps, but that's not going to work when there are no apps vs iOS/android camp's massive app stores. You can't sell it as much as an iPad because it's NOT an iPad. They have a very, very tough battle to fight against Apple. They should be targeting android instead of apple because once android tablets drop prices to counter this thing, it's game over for Microsoft.

And don't forget, these keyboard covers and tablet designs - I personally don't think it's a direct knockoff of apple, but after showing my sister, my neighbor, they think it's an iPad.

Tough, tough, tough position to be in and the stigma with Microsoft brand, they have everything against them.

Android to MS is a joke, they get plenty of money from Google for every android used. Apple has something that makes MS afraid, the ears of Corp IT. More and more Apple products are been used in Corp. MS does not like this, this is 80% or so of where their profit comes from. Google has nothing to offer here right now. Now if Apple was to gain a leg up in Corp, imagine what damage they could do to MS if OS X servers started to pop up and IT liked it.

MS is not dumb the last thing they want is Apple inside Corp. Look at what happen at IBM with Siri. Apple consumer hardware and software is been seen in places just a few years ago no one would have dreamed it would happen.

Apple is not a poor company if it saw sales rise in corp's can you imagine the kind of quick turn around they could do and bring servers to the industry with an OS already cooked. Time will tell. Now if MS bring out lockdown software for their windows 8 server then these tablets could become the norm in companies.

I would like if Apple put more money and time in big business but I just don't' see that they will with no Mac Pro for another year and no Server Hardware to sell.

THey have done the same with MSN Search (now bing), and Zune as well. That's not going to bode well for stock investors. Microsoft answers to stock holders, not the general public.

Ballmer laughed at the first iPhone 2G. On TV. Recored and played back by billions forever. I don't have any faith in this man but if this thing flops, he's still not gonna be outed.

Sure this thing will be released months away. But you can bet that google is not going to sit down and keel over just because Microsoft is coming out to play. I will almost bet the android tablets will drop price and this will actually impact microsoft more so than the iPad looking weak compared to these new tablets.

Do you know what a vent means for the user experience?
-Well 3 hours of battery life, MAX
Yes because a slit in the shelle somehow consumes power?

-an inefficient OS that clearly requires a lot of power for very little.
Yes you already know how windows 8 tablet edition is going to behave on that tablet

-vents also allow more dust and outside contaminants to get into the inside of the device.
Time will be the judge of that, but at least its better then having tablets that some find uncomfortably hot.

Call me a fanboy because I see the future of tablets as being optimized for a touch screen input and having very power efficient processors. Oh and your jokes are tacky.
Tegra 3 is power inefficient ?

Metro apps (i.e. apps from the Windows Store) work on both tablets, and all other Windows 8 computers. It's the legacy, Intel-based programs that don't work on the ARM tablets.

That's a problem. The Metro ecosystem is non-existent, but there is a wealth of intel based Windows software in circulation in the world. Especially in the enterprise sphere.

I made this transition when going from PC/Android to Apple, and it wasn't fun. But at least the iOS and Mac universe has a wealth of app content.

However, I think the larger crime is the lack of Windows Phone fitting into this grand vision. Hopefully the Apollo keynote will shed light on this.

I will say this much, out the gate MSFT has made a much better tablet/netbook/ultrabook combo with far more potential than anything android has done.

I hardly ever upgrade full OS versions I do full installs, be it OS X or Windows, unless I'm forced (by forced I meant 'paid' :D) to do it.

Usually, running Disk Repair, Repair Permissions and resseting the PRAM before upgrading would avoid many common issues.

Amazing so we'll put out our next version of our OS that is basically incompatible with desktops and then follow it up with two different tablets?

He also said that the iPhone would never gain market share.... LOL (using that term accurately).

This thread has the most amount of nerd fights I've seen in a long time lol. Keep it up boys

well, apple strives to keep things ultra small, lightweight, and powerful, all at the same time reducing heat, noise, and increasing battery life.

If you put in vents in order to cool, then perhaps you shouldn't make it so powerful to the point it needs active cooling fans? What are you going to be doing on this thing that requires that much cooling? Of course if you need to cool something with fans, you know that thing is using a lot of power. Sure you can't hear the fans on with a lot of ambient noise, but when you and the tablet are alone in a room without any sounds, you don't want to hear your tablet whirring away either.

No one has as many apps as iOS. What the Surface needs are some good quality apps at launch.

Microsoft games on Surface would be killer. I'm speaking for the public, not myself, since the only game I really play published by MS Game Studios is Age of Empires II, which is from 1998. Halo seems good, but I never get to play with >3 people.

I agree it's a difficult battle. I have a strong suspicion that they'll get Windows Phone 7 and 8 apps to run on Windows 8 tablet. There's something about the snap view function in Windows 8 that seems to indicate this. I have nothing to substantiate it, except for observation of the snap view.

I actually think that this is the tablet that will grab over 50% of the iPad sales. I can't wait to get my hands on this. I hope it will cost less than $500. That would be a killer price if the price is just below the iPad.

Who else is going to make the switch? I sure am. Hopefully this won't be another HP Touchpad fad that did not survive.
