Because if you don't update, your mac becomes obsolite, you can't install software updates. Heck, there have been people that had to buy a new mac if they wanted to get a new iPhone or iPod. That's never been the case with Windows.

What are you talking about? You don't make sense. Windows and Mac OS X apply software updates the same. You can't slap Windows 7 on a Windows 98 box & you can't slap Lion on a Panther box. So, you are wrong Windows and Mac are the same in that regard. There is a hardware and software compatibility limitation that all devices are subjected to.

At least when it's time to upgrade software Mac OS X costs a few dollars and there is one version to buy, but Windows costs hundred of dollars and you have a bunch of confusing versions to choose from. Why can't it just be Windows?

BTW you can upgrade Mac hardware you have to know what you are doing.

Ummm it's an accessory. By definition you can use the tablet without it. You apple lovers are certainly getting desperate with your arguments.

They why did Microsoft spend the major of their Keynote on it? Because, it's the game changer feature, so yeah you count it, because when you buy a Surface you will be lugging around it's keyboard... period. Have fun with that. ;)

So then I guess we have to also count the Smart Cover's thickness with the iPad, since Apple spend the same amount of time Microsoft did on the Smart Cover during the iPad 2 keynote (when the cover was introduced) :

10:28AM "We designed the case right along side the product. It's not a case -- it's a cover."

Or do we go for double standards ?

... current iPad, which can't run a full OS...

While I know what you mean - you want a touch based tablet to run a desktop operating system - to be clear, iPad definitely runs a full OS (iOS), it's just not OS X. But as others have complained about mightily in other threads, there has been and continues to be a convergence of iOS and OS X which may ultimately provide that same functionality for those who want it. And what could potentially be better is that it wouldn't be a Windows 8 / Metro switch, it would just be "OS <something>" on any device (obviously just supposition/wishful thinking on my part).

Actually I won't be. Period. The keyboard would actually sit at home on my desk and id snap it on when needing to get some real work done. Now what? I don't think accessory means what you think it means.

Keep the ridiculous comments coming though, just makes this thread about a MS product get bigger and bigger and more likely to show up on a google search. Please, continue to tell me about this "required accessory"

Nope, they didn't spend time when they first launched the iPad talking about it and they did not tout any accessory as something you needed to operate the device. You don't need a smart cover to use an iPad. You are wrong and you don't get it.

Phht. You will need it. When you buy the soon to be Zune 2 and you find yourself stuck using a keyboard all the time think back to this thread.... I TOLD YOU SO.

Uh, I posted the picture from the SmartCover introduction during the iPad 2, now you're still denying they spent time like Microsoft did on it ?

You also don't need the cover with the Microsoft tablet to use the Surface.

What am I wrong about exactly ?

You want to include the cover's thickness with Microsoft's tablet, why not with the iPad ? They are both the same as far as keynote coverage and optionality.

Phone Post sorry in advanced.

1: I can throw windows 7 on a a XP box from 7 years ago, and it will run, in fact I did, an old athlon 64, 4200+, 4gb ram, geforce 6800 ultra, with a 500gig hard drive, it flies.
I can't install 10.7 on a 2006 Mac.

And, there are multiple versions of windows because each version has a different purpose.

It costs 100-200 dollars because Microsoft will support an OS for 10+ years, hell they still update and patch XP.

Apple drops OSX support much much faster.

So I just did a search and found several hits about microsoft bailing out Apple... If I post three of them, which is one more than you posted, that makes me right doesn't it?
No, it means you found 3 people (if they aren't actually all the same) that think the word million means as much to a multi-billion dollar corp as it does to them personally. The media makes mistakes, you know. Maybe you don't.

It will not run well, be real. I've done the same thing and it runs like crap.

Apple moves forward.

No, what I want is a nice and easy to use tablet, let's say like an iPad or an Android one or a Microsoft Surface.

Which can also, if I wish to, also run a full OS and with the addition of an optional keyboard I can then, what like like to call, "Create Content"

It's been said, even on these forums by Apple fans, Tablets are mostly all about "Content Consumption"

This is great, but if the device has the power to do so, why not allow it, perhaps with an optional accessory that you don't have to buy, to be able to also be a "Content Creation" device and full full versions of powerful apps, and not just cut down mobile versions.

Why want to be limited?

You are not comparing it properly. These are initial product announcements. When Apple launched iPad 1 there was only focus on the technology and the experience with just the device.

When we already knew the experience and already owned an iPad 1, the launch of the iPad 2 was focused on enhancements and new accessories, but still you do not need a smart cover to use an iPad and they did NOT spend as much time on the smart cover as MS did on their keyboard. I watch all keynotes.

I'm not being a jerk about it I am being real.

MS spent too much time on the keyboard for it to be just an accessory.

After the keynote MS showed all the devices attached to the keyboards. At the end of the show NONE of the guests were allowed to touch the keyboards or the devices, why? Why tout a keyboard and then tell everyone hands off?

It's all vapor! Just a bunch of buzz words and media muck, nothing legitimate. When Apple announced a new product you get to see the device used, you get to know the cost and the guests of the keynote get to use the device.

The smart cover was introduced with the iPad 2, there was no Smart cover before that.

I'm comparing it properly, you just don't want to because it destroys your entire argument. Which is pretty piss poor to begin with (it's thicker because of the cover vs the iPad without a cover!!!!). What a silly argument.

Anyway, who cares if the iPad is thicker ? The Galaxy Tab is also thinner than the iPad, no one cares.

No, it runs just fine. 4gb of ram is enough for windows 7 to roam in.

That 4gb is fine for basic use in windows 7, the board supports 8gb, so I could perk it up.

4gb? That's as much as a base imac comes with ;) or twice as much as a base mini ;)

Apple forces you to upgrade for no reason besides " we say so ".

A multi-billion dollar company bleeding money left and right. (yeah you forgot that part) If it was such an insignificant amount while being so well off the transaction wouldn't have happened and we wouldn't be talking about it. Come back once again with a more compelling argument next time. Your misguided attempts at insulting my intelligence aren't proving your case any.

No you are not and you don't get it. You won't get it, you are a MS Fan Bay... why are you here...? Is it because no one cares enough of about copycats to make a dedicated website like MacRumors? Well have fun reading Mac Rumors on your Surface and using your keyboard to navigate your tablet.

Same Old Song and Dance

I finally checked out the Surface intro video. From all the pro MS posts here I thought Ballmer was finally backing up his words of "coming full guns" even though it's almost two years after the fact and iPad is on its third version. But when the Surface froze during the demonstration I could not even laugh as Microsoft's continued boldness of offering "third-rate products" to the public is not even funny anymore. The reason we pay more for Apple products is for quality, although many anti-Apple folks would like to believe this higher cost for quality to be "Apple Tax."

Surface vs. iPad: Microsoft Getting Rusty At Stealing from Apple

I guess nothing has changed with bug riddled MS products. I don't miss my days of Windows shortcmoings (too many to list) one bit. :apple:

The surface I think will do well, just because it has the power of an ultrabook, and a REAL OS. So your not limited by iOS.

What makes Apple higher quality than thing else? My workstation would run you almost 20 grand. Is it crap just because it rubs windows and doesn't look cool?

Windows is great for people who like to tinker with / use old hardware or build their own machines. Used to be that way myself, not so much anymore as I was spending way too much time tinkering and not using.

And, there are multiple versions of windows because each version has a different purpose.
Just multiple price points to get the punters in. It's just one OS with hobbled features, depending on the versions you buy and (anecdotally of course), most people I know who have bought the cheaper versions have usually upgraded at least one or more levels after the fact.

It costs 100-200 dollars because Microsoft will support an OS for 10+ years, hell they still update and patch XP.

So I'm paying Microsoft to pay developers to maintain a really old OS and then carry at least some of that baggage forward?

Apple drops OSX support much much faster.
While painful, it can potentially move the OS forward faster which can be a good thing. Depends on individual comfort levels with change of course. Luckily, there are at least two different models of change in the market place for everyone to choose from.

Uh ? Where did you get I was an MS fanboy from ?

What am I not getting ? There is no logic behind your choice to include or not include the cover's thickness in the comparison between the Surface and iPad and frankly, no one really cares either way, both will be similar.

From the drool you left on the surface.... :p

What are you on about ? Can you point me where I was overly excited about the surface anywhere in this thread ?

I pointed out the fallacy in your argument, that does not make me a fanboy of anything.

The Fallacy is all in YOUR head. Have you not noticed you are the only one replaying. It's not an argument, but a fact that the keyboard is an essential piece to the surface and without it your experience will be minimized.

KnightWRX, I think you need to pay attention to what's being said. theelysium has obviously spent months beta testing Surface tablets and knows them inside and out. Because of that I don't think we have any reason to doubt his unparalleled knowledge and expertise in this area.

Examples, articles, links, anything to support this fact?
