The question is: can they innovate their way to a new business model? Competing with the OEMs on an ever-wider front is not going to end well; and they're aggressively going after the only part of the OEM's business that makes the OEM's any profit. So what's MS' end game here?

Their endgame is to create a full on Surface line from tablets to phones and beyond. They are premium devices with premium prices, so OEMs have plenty of room available. Eventually Microsoft will have their own Surface line for everything.

As much as I love Apple, Microsoft have out Apple'd Apple with the Surface Studio. Apple are no longer the innovators that others follow, the baton has been passed on. Apple need to up their game, how long can they live on their name alone....

They're pushing OEM's to innovate. When left on their own, it's a race to the bottom in terms of innovation as well as quality.
Unfortunately you are right. In the markets where Surface Pros are available, OEMs are feeling the nudge to do better.
However, in markets where there's no Surfaces (and those are a lot of countries), the Chinese and Taiwanese OEMs are still playing the same old game, race to the bottom.

Design looks of a desktop not my requirement as it sits in my cluttered office, you get the picture. Functionality in ease of use, reliability, not interested in daily chats with IT, expandibility, are a few of the more important requirements.
Now the integrated pen, touch screen, laptop has a good deal of appeal for my needs. I tried the Surface Pro 4 for a month, loved the concept, way to many issues. To be fair I tried the lower end of the Surface Pro 4 models. The higher end with i7, max memory and drive space may have worked better.
I would like Apple to design an integrated laptop.

Thank you!

As someone who uses Win10 and Sierra side by side everyday, please name a single thing that MacOS does better. File management, photos, music, Office, Lightroom, are just easier and snappier in Windows. ITunes is still better on Sierra. And yes Cortana is awful.

MacOS has been severely neglected and I can hardly think of any major improvements in the past 4 years. Meanwhile, Microsoft is leaner, hungrier for pros to come over to their side.
That's an interesting comparison.

I use Windows, and have never owned a Mac.. but from reading online I assumed MacOS was pretty good.. and I have wondered about switching.

But that reinforces me sticking with Windows.

I guess ultimately you get used to whatever it is that you do use, and change is challenging.

Until we have verification its running kaby lake, it's still potentially a legitimate claim. It will be highly disappointing if it turns out they're using prior-gen tech again.
The Surface Studio and the Surface Book i7 are both running Skylake, look for the string "6th Gen Intel Core" on that page. I have no idea why it seems to be so hard for so many people comprehend that the phrase "Kaby Lake has been released" doesn't mean that all processor lines have Kaby Lake versions (far from it).

I have to say, this thing looks like a Mac Mini with an attached monitor, minus the necessary connection cables (should you try to do it via a Mini + a Vesa arm for your monitor).

Their Marketing style, video, and fonts/color scheme is very Apple-like. Even during the presentation, the table the machine is on looks like an Apple Store table...

And yet...

I DON'T CARE.

The product is outstanding. The dial is super-innovative. The presentation of all items is absolutely excellent. And for artists, this has the potential to become a Halo device.

Microsoft is "copying" (I mean...learning and borrowing from) Steve Jobs' Apple here, not Tim Cook's.

Bravo.

P.D. I love macOS and I still think it is superior, but using Windows is no longer as painful as it used to be.

Just like when I left iOS for Touchwiz Android, I might have to give this a try and see if I can live with what I lose in order to gain what Apple doesn't give.

iMac G4 (2002)
- 21mm thick swiveling LCD screen on a sphere base that houses the computer

Microsoft Surface Studio (2016)
- 12.3mm thick swiveling LCD screen on a square base that looks like a Mac Mini

Should Apple now make the iMac G4 again, or just think of a new form factor? The latter.

Getting tired of the references to the competition and how it is good. The big response from Apple up to this point has been new watch colors and a phone with the antennas moved to the edges. Come on dude.
I hear you, since I'm not entirely entrenched in the Apple ecosystem I welcome this stuff. If I was tied to Apple alone for now, this would annoy me.

I have to say... looks good.

OTOH, not the best specs for the price (no SSD, but "hybrid", not the best grfx)
... hey... haven't we seen that before: Nice and thin, but not the best specs...?

Thus, Apple: YOU HAVE ROOM TO BE BETTER!!

You really need to watch more carefully.....

AND THAT SAYS A LOT!!!!

Now that's innovation. Especially the Dial. And that beautifully thin screen. Just what I would expect these days.

If Tim wants people to continue to view his company's product lines (i.e. macs) as pro products, then Apple better get off its duff. We'll see tomorrow. Competitors are upping their game.

One word: Innovation.

Microsoft is creative like hell. Apple recycles the same products with small enhancements (iPhone 7) -- or copies MS (iPad Pro). I still don't think their overall user experience is on par with Apple, but innovation counts. I'm still with Apple, but getting closer to the fence.

Or, per my earlier post, perhaps Apple did the research and decided it didn't add enough value for its users? Perhaps they decided iterating on input methods like the force touch trackpad and multi touch gestures offered more real world benefits? After all, they patented the Surface Studio idea 7 years ago: http://www.patentlyapple.com/patently-apple/2010/08/the-mother-lode-welcome-to-the-imac-touch.html

Sometimes these novel ideas look and sound cool, but in practice, they aren't nearly as useful or practical in real world use. Surface Book is a perfect example.

Microsoft could have really shot up their market share if they would have priced these more competitively. The design and specs are great, but not many people are looking to buy a $3,000 desktop or a $2400 laptop.

Looks pretty impressive, at $700 more than the most expensive preconfigured iMac (although custom builds go higher), its definitely aimed at creative professionals. The devil will be in the detail though and much of the functionality won't be available till early next year when they release the creative pack.

Further, at that price point it's not going to scavenge much of Apples iMac sales, I don't think. Additionally Apple seem ideologically opposed to touch screens on desktop devices, mostly for usability reasons. So it will be interesting to see just how useable such a device actually is in real life.

That's the issue, I see complacency seeping in. We've got apple focused on streaming music and other services, but Microsoft, because they fell so far behind a few years ago have been swinging for the fences these past few years. Its hows as well, the Studio is very innovative, and I love the dial, that thing is mind blowing

I have to say I'm surprised. The first time I've seen someone really challenge Apple, not just copy ( I'm looking at you Google/Samsung ). The gauntlet has been thrown and it must be hurting in Cupertino.
If only it didn't run that piece of spyware called Windows 10 !

The prices are crazy though... 3000$ for 8mg of Ram ??? And people complain that Apple is expensive and elitist ?

But anyhow... I'm almost certain now to be disappointed tomorrow by Apple... They really need to step up for 2017
