I am sure the "Magic Toolbar" will make the world difference to the sales of Mac`s (/S), and let`s not forget the emojis & watch straps. Apple`s priorities are abundantly clear fashion, phones & toys, I would rather Apple put the Mac in the hands of someone who actually cared, as they no longer deserve our loyalty.

Apple may yet surprise, equally settling down for another dull, uninspiring event. If the best Apple can bring with all it`s resources is the "Magic Toolbar" we are absolutely betting on the wrong platform. Just waiting on tomorrows event, more precisely the release of the Surface Book with the new Power Base, as it checks all the boxes that Apple has so effectively ignored for so long. I wish Apple luck selling their $2K notebooks to the average user...

A fugly lineup that looks like it was designed in 1996.

MS is twenty years late and heading in the wrong direction.

Those are computers designed for people who can't embrace the futures.

Poor, poor, poor.

Truth is, this is something I would have expected to see Apple invent. I'd be interested to examine this at the Microsoft Kiosk at the mall, if they ever put it on display.
I'm sure they will, though I will avoid that place like the plague, lest I fall to temptation

3-4 more years like that at Microsoft and 3-4 more years of stagnation at Apple and we can forget about Apple.

Funny, I feel the same way about my iMac after seeing the Studio, and how it works

My full switch back to Windows will be complete with the Surface Studio... I already gave up on Apple laptops. I love the 3:2 aspect ratio as well.

3/2 was the ratio of the original iPhone!
On a slightly related note - I recently started a new job and my monitor is an old 19" in 1280*1024. The 5/4 ratio is glorious. It feels so great to not have to use a stupid widescreen anymore. I focus much more on what's in front of me. It's just that resolution that's... ridiculous.

People are complaining about the price, I'd assume this is not being aimed at the average joe, just like the overpriced Mac pros , these will be snapped up by creative agencies and major companies by the truckload, except unlike the Mac Pro this device is fit for purpose.

Smart move by Microsoft, go after the professional segment which apple has neglected. And if Microsoft commits to updating this every year, it's a winner, as apposed to its own "pro" machines that get updates every 3 -4 years.

And from my experience, from prior Microsoft products, this thing is only a starting point, by version Three it will be a much better product, miscosoft makes impressive jumps each generation.

Thank you!

As someone who uses Win10 and Sierra side by side everyday, please name a single thing that MacOS does better. File management, photos, music, Office, Lightroom, are just easier and snappier in Windows.
Both are mature technologies. I prefer windows, but its just a preference. Anti windows crowd here is living in the 90's

Even Steve Jobs acknowledged that Apple couldn't stay on top forever. I'm not saying this is the beginning of the end, but we are seeing others take some chances with innovation.

Funny, I feel the same way about my iMac after seeing the Studio, and how it works

So so so true. After upgrading my iMac 2009 to dual SSD in raid 1, I've had no reason to upgrade to the latest offerings. Sure there is a performance gain , but same size and I prefer having target mode .....still waiting for a reason to buy new iMac.

I can't speak spefically to the Surface Studio, But I have a Touch screen based monitor that tilts flat down for writing / drawing on, and it works very well for creative stuff (I use it in Lightroom). It's a great feature for creative use where a pen might be a better input model than a finger or a mouse.

The one I have unfortunately isn't glass fronted and uses IR for detection instead of any other tech. Benefit is I can use any pointing surface as my "pen". downside is no pressure sensitivity.

Put a Wacom style digitizer in a 27" model of that running full RGB? glorious for anyone who is at home using a pen / stylus.

If you're editing images, would the smudges and fingerprints bother you in any way? Would it be more optimal to use an iPad and Apple Pencil for drawing and have the image seamlessly update between the iMac and iPad? I'm just wondering if that's more the direction Apple is going... constantly cleaning a 27" monitor can't be fun, after all, and it would be in keeping with their philosophy of keeping their product lines focused on what they're best at.

The most radical thing we've seen from Apple in recent years in this arena is the Mac Pro, which Apple can't even keep updated on a regular schedule.
I'll be the first to admit, that the new Mac Pro was innovative and while many pros poo-poo'd it for various reason, the design was mind blowing. As the years passed, it seemed Apple's interest in the Mac Pro has waned for some reason

That's the thing I thought when I saw the Surface Studio too - but no animation studio is going to be ok with the so-so GPU specs. Heck, many graphic designers will have issues with it.

We will have to disagree here. I'm having the time of my life teasing quite a few mac die hards in studios who were blown away by this announcement. These people are stuck on some old mac hardware in some cases.

And if anyone has an issue with a GTX 980, they most certainly have an issue with GPUs in Macbook pros and iMacs.

I'm glad to see someone challenging not just Apple, but Wacom. They've had a stranglehold for far too long. Their cintiq studio product line has an nVidia quadro at the upper levels, and costs up to $3000.

cause yes. Those are sooooo similar.

Keep drinking the kool-aid
What Kool-aid? It's an observation. Wouldn't drinking Kool-aid imply I'm all on the Apple bandwagon? I wasn't insulting Microsoft, I'm just pointing out the obvious similarities in the borrowed design aesthetics. It's not an insult to Microsoft, but a compliment to Apple. And now Microsoft is showing some obvious innovation here. Just because it looks similar doesn't mean they're copying Apple. They clearly aren't. Maybe you need to drink some actual Kool-aid and chill out a bit.

Agreed, competition is good to drive the innovation, provided that they actually try to innovate. I'm not saying apple won't, but right now, I'm setting my expectations low, so I can be [hopefully] pleasantly surprised.

Haha ! Me too, I'm setting my expectations very low now. I still prefer Apple's overall approach to tech ( and the fact that it's the only company remaining that values privacy), but this is a serious warning from Microsoft. Time to step up the game for 2017.

cosumer acceptance of usb-c at this point is essentially zero. It has great potential for desktop hub set ups that are not needed with an all in one.
This is a pro machine. A pro machine that only has USB3 as its fastest external connectivity is embarrassing.
USB-C means Thunderbolt, and considering this "pro" machine only has a single notebook-class GPU, I say that's an unfortunate miss by Microsoft.

3-4 more years like that at Microsoft and 3-4 more years of stagnation at Apple and we can forget about Apple.
Depends on what you think about computers. Go to emerging markets, and for many of them, their first and only computers are smartphones. Thus I can understand Apple's decision to bet on mobile.

As long as it runs windows...it's a deal breaker for me. Maybe it'll take a second look when Windows reach version 15 or something. As of now, it still feels like a beta os for me
Indeed. And in some respects it seems to get worse with every update (in 1607 they added things like forced downloads of apps into my start menu for promotional purposes, a lock screen that can no longer be deactivated and is completely useless on a desktop computer, forced Windows updates etc.).
In the other hand, I'm surprised nobody complained about the price? Isn't it one of the main things that people complain about Apple products?
Well, you get a 28" high resolution touch screen of (apparently) very high quality. The iMac is really not comparable.

What astounds me most is that Microsoft is really going after one of the core Mac clienteles ("creative professionals"). Hopefully Apple feels the kick in butt they just received ...

The Surface Studio sounds interesting, but I wonder how useful the tilt function will actually be in daily use and whether it's worth the premium. Apple patented this idea 7 years ago but clearly haven't seen the value of it in their labs to release it. Maybe if there's demand for Studio they'll change their minds.

The best use-case scenario for a tilting touchscreen desktop is really just drawing and with the advent of the Apple Pencil I'm sure Apple has since revisited a tilting touchscreen iMac. Otherwise I prefer my human interface on a desktop computer to be horizontally oriented via mouse/trackpad.
