That's an excellent way to phrase it.

That price will put it out of the mind of most businesses and consumers, but it looks like something from the future and will give MS that appeal that Apple had years ago.
I see a lot people going to MS stores to this
We are talking about a pro machine here. Regular consumer will not be willing to pay for a $3000 desktop. USB-C can also mean Thunderbolt. On the Surface Studio, your fastest external connectivity is just USB3. And not only that, a pro "desktop" with just a single notebook GPU? Come on. Microsoft is positioning this as a "pro" machine.

I see this as being huge for ad firms and design offices, where the look of the tech is super important. If your doing heavy video editing or fx, you'll pass

That's an interesting comparison.

I use Windows, and have never owned a Mac.. but from reading online I assumed MacOS was pretty good.. and I have wondered about switching.

But that reinforces me sticking with Windows.

I guess ultimately you get used to whatever it is that you do use, and change is challenging.

I use both everyday (in fact, i use Android, iOS, MacOS, Windows (7,2012,10), As well as a bunch of Linux variants.

Ultimately, each OS has some things they are better at than others, somethings that they fall behind on others. Each one has a different learning curve. At the end of the day, They are all just launchpads for your programs / Apps and they all fundamentally do the exact same things.

one is not "more advanced" than others. What you do find is that someone who grew up exclusively in one system, will be more comfortable in that system. if you're used to a universal menu bar along the top, you'll be frustrated when it doesn't exist in windows (because the bars stick to the programs). if you're in windows and use windows snap features extensively, you'll be disappointing by Apple's poor window size manipulation. If you're used to MacOS's trackpad focus, Windows Mouse centric focus might feel janky (and vice versa).

it really comes down to personal preference and experience. Ultimately, aside from Program support, there's little differences in the end user functionality.

iMac G4 (2002)
- 21mm thick swiveling LCD screen on a sphere base that houses the computer

Microsoft Surface Studio (2016)
- 12.3mm thick swiveling LCD screen on a square base that looks like a Mac Mini

Should Apple now make the iMac G4 again, or just think of a new form factor? The latter.
I dunno, man, the G4 iMac is still, IMO, the prettiest desktop computer ever made.

I am pretty set with my Apple products for the coming 5 years or so. Then I will take a hard look of what is on the other side of the fence. Today I like what I see. Apple hopefully comes around and starts to innovate my ass and not only on the HW side but also SW like Final Cut and Aperture.

Makes the Wacom Cintiq obsolete it seems (and has the Cintiq's form factor a bit).

I think if Apple closes the "touch gap" with MS soon, most users will wait to have a MacOS version of this. But if they wait too long, even though Apple has owned the "multitouch space" since the iPhone, they're going to lose customers to MS, and a bit of their mojo along with it.

But it's good to see Redmond doing cool things. Competition is good for us all.

Congrats to MS for coming up with a solid concept/product for designers/artists. As a graphic designer this caught up my attention. Love Apple but gotta say they have been sleeping at the wheel with the Mac and not giving a damn to professionals. I hope tomorrow I can have a different opinion, but their lack of updates on the Mac Pro, displays, MBP, etc is unnerving to say the least. Get back to your game Apple. Watch, Music and Cars and fun but focus on what you do best.

Until we have verification its running kaby lake, it's still potentially a legitimate claim. It will be highly disappointing if it turns out they're using prior-gen tech again.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm almost certain that these Surfaces aren't using Kaby Lake either, so performance should be pretty comparable.

I have to say I'm surprised. The first time I've seen someone really challenge Apple, not just copy ( I'm looking at you Google/Samsung ).
If only it didn't run that piece of spyware called Windows 10 !

The prices are crazy though... 3000$ for 8mg of Ram ??? And people complain that Apple is expensive and elitist ?

But anyhow... I'm almost certain now to be disappointed tomorrow by Apple...

The price si crazy, but makes some sense. Full 27" active digitizers aren't cheap. As someone pointed out, the Cintiq 27" display with digitizer (no PC internals) alone is $2700. While I'm sure there's a healthy margin applied here, there's no way the first generation of this thing was going to be only around $2000.

BTW: This forum has changed into a Microsoft enthusiast blog.

No it hasn't.

It's just changed into a more mature environment, where we are genuinely interested in new technology, whether for work or leisure.

And whilst this forum is generally focussed towards Apple products, innovation in the wider tech industry is absolutely of interest.

The days of being labelled "fanboys" or other partisan brand loyalty are definitely being left behind..

There will always be opinion and argument, that will never change! But I think everyone here is interested and indeed passionate about innovation and creativity in information technology, engineering and design. And in computer devices specifically.

And that's cool!

Wow Microsoft really is now the innovation company. What a shame that Apple has become so boring..... I love Apple - but really am starting to wonder if it will be time to switch to MS Soon.

That's the issue, I see complacency seeping in. We've got apple focused on streaming music and other services, but Microsoft, because they fell so far behind a few years ago have been swinging for the fences these past few years. Its hows as well, the Studio is very innovative, and I love the dial, that thing is mind blowing
Depends on where you stand. Sure, the Surface Studio looks nice. It's just that Apple pick a different path. Apple now has arguably the most efficient and powerful mobile SoC. That's where Apple has been focusing their power.

Both companies are innovative, but they each take a different path.

But it runs.... Windows... But good, a very good move in the right direction.

While Windows 10 is still butt-ugly, at least it supports touch screens and every major manufacturer has been making touch-screen products for a while now.

Apple is so late to the game, it's just sad.

I am so invested in Apple's ecosystem, but might actually get a Surface to dip my toes in it and see if I can start migrating, slowly.

Getting tired of the references to the competition and how it is good. The big response from Apple up to this point has been new watch colors and a phone with the antennas moved to the edges. Come on dude.
Agreed, competition is good to drive the innovation, provided that they actually try to innovate. I'm not saying apple won't, but right now, I'm setting my expectations low, so I can be [hopefully] pleasantly surprised.

How about we wait until tomorrow before we start comparing this to Apple's current offerings? Is it that hard to wait one day?

Yeah, it's hard :)

Truth is, this is something I would have expected to see Apple invent. I'd be interested to examine this at the Microsoft Kiosk at the mall, if they ever put it on display.

For price comparison, Wacom Cintiq 27 QHD Touch costs $2799.99 and that's just the display.

But you can connect the Cintiq to any build of computer that you want. And you can connect a Cintiq to a swing-arm. Surface Studio looks cool, but it actually ignores some fairly important concerns for creative professionals.

As much as I love Apple, Microsoft have out Apple'd Apple with the Surface Studio. Apple are no longer the innovators that others follow, the baton has been passed on. Apple need to up their game, how long can they live on their name alone....
I don't know, Touch ID in 5S, Force Touch on 6S, dual camera on 7+... seems like they are keeping companies on their toes. And please no one argue that what I'm listing wasn't done by apple first, cause we all know that. Apple themselves has never said (to my knowledge) that the invented these things. They made them super viable that companies rushed to rip them or still don't have them entirely!

Mind blowing indeed.... kinda makes tomorrow's Mac event a bit of a non-event.

But I'm sure most current consumer will be less annoyed at no USB-C than no USB-A. I would think one USB-C could have made it on there, but I doubt sales will suffer at all.

No consumer is going to say "no USB-C port!? NO sale!" right now.
cosumer acceptance of usb-c at this point is essentially zero. It has great potential for desktop hub set ups that are not needed with an all in one.

Comparing apples to apples, the cost of the Studio isn't that bad - for content creators. For slobs like me, wanting such a beautiful machine, well, its a bit too high

Honestly any average user can now sit down in front of the foreign OS and figure it out pretty quickly; they are both now SO similar to one another. track pad gestures in MacOS blow away any Windows device and the driver support is naturally better as the hardware is controlled by Apple. After that, there are no appreciable benefits to running MacOS And nobody in this forum can legitimately claim otherwise.

I guess that's the point. Although people(myself included) have some criticisms, it's a breath of fresh air to see Microsoft at least trying to innovate in the traditional computer segment. So far, I'd say they're doing a good job. The most radical thing we've seen from Apple in recent years in this arena is the Mac Pro, which Apple can't even keep updated on a regular schedule.
