Wow, well you better tell the FTC cause they just finished financial reporting and they claim they are selling well and making a hefty profit. But I am sure you already know that as you are obviously an expert this topic.

For the first time in 4 generations they are doing OK and not writing off the remaining inventory at a loss.

Not what you would call a success story.

So, I finally had a moment to look at this thing. It's definitely gorgeous. Some of the engineering solutions are elegant and well executed, but there is one major problem - price.

The entry level $2,999 unit is short on storage and low on power. Plus, it has to drive a massive display and manage Windows 10 which isn't lean by any means. A properly outfitted machine runs $4,199 and that's ridiculous. Apple is the more competitive offering here and that's just weird.

It will be interesting to see how many units Microsoft ships in the next few months.

Surface Studio looks impressive, but 3k for the base model is pricing out of most people's interest.

Did no one else notice the wireless keyboard with numeric keypad?
Apple, I've been asking for years...

Yes I did. I'm a big fan of the Magic Keyboard - apart from the lack of a numeric keypad. But I found this the other day, and instantly ordered one.

It's not the same as having a keyboard with it's own numeric keypad, but in some ways it might be better, I'll just pull it forward when I need it. Hoping it plays nice in terms of connecting reliably and all that. Cheap too.

The version with i7, 2TB hybrid drive, 32gb memory and 4GB graphics memory is $4199.

By comparison a MacPro Refurb 3.5Ghz 6 core Xeon E5 (much faster), 16gb memory, and 256GB PCIe Flash storage (much faster), and 3GB of VRAM is only $3399 (no display, wacom)

Used / Refurbished Apple Mac Pro Cylinder Six Core/3.5 GHz
  • 32 GB of RAM
  • 512 GB internal Solid State Drive
  • no keyboard
  • Airport Extreme and Bluetooth installed
  • Dual AMD FirePro D700 6GB VRAM each
  • OS 10.9.5 installed
  • MacPro6.1-6: Apple Model No. equivalent: MD878LL/A
  • $4319

Why not compare it to a decked out iMac instead?

Ah, I never played the online multiplayer for MoH: Frontline (as mentioned I had it on the PS2). But man, that story. It just felt so convincing.

Funny how war games beat the WWII genre to death so badly that we finally moved to modern-day with CoD 4: Modern Warfare. Fast-forward to now, and we (well, Call of Duty) has progressed all the way into the future. And I feel that the future isn't the setting that the majority of gamers want (I may be wrong). It's cool to see a return to older times with Battlefield 1.

But I just don't know that anyone could capture the feeling of war games from the early-mid 2000's ever again. What a cool time it was to be a gamer.
I should have been clearer. I was talking about PC. Yes, I suppose it was a good time for games. It's better now, but I don't have a huge interest being older and not having much free time. Did you ever come across The Operative: No One Lives Forever and its sequel? It was handed out like candy at a conference I went to around the time it came out. It was mainly a hardware conference.

Cupertino, fire up your photocopiers...

Some things i saw:

i was disappointed not to see surface pen upgrade. i think the surface 4 pen is fine, but needs refinement: its been a year

anyone seeing jiggle on this thing in "drafting table" mode. Screen shake unacceptable at this price

i would not be surprised to see a 24" studio jr. in the spring with more accessible pricing

Oh, yeah. I also don't like the aspect ratio on the Surface Studio. Just personal opinion.

Cool! Is nice to see at least SOMEone doing something interesting with desktops, and towards graphics market, too. Mobile handhelds are not going to be able to do it all.

Now that I think about it, since MS has revealed all these new Machines in the Surface lineup, their naming scheme is kinda jacked now.

It's weird. The one Surface with the pro moniker, a name you'd associate with the high end, is the smallest and weakest of the bunch.

Apple, under GB Cook has lost its mojo, doing PR with car Karaoke. Pitiful. Cook should resign. Microsoft has done what Apple should have done. Cook is merely a caretaker raking in a huge salary for doing nothing. Tomorrow might make a difference but I am not counting on it. The mac mantle has been passed to a new Microsoft generation, much more savvy than the present Apple generation Alas!

Apple's hardware is hardly a leader anymore, as are all other Apple products.

Microsoft is going after the professional market that Apple dumped.

LMAO.

Yep the whole creators message does seem to be targeting Apple customers who feel abandoned.

The studio looks very impressive. The way you can quickly switch through different color modes to see how your work will look on lesser displays looked neat on top of everything else that is exciting people. The touch stuff and tools for artists and graphics people will be very compelling. It demoed very well.

The presentation was generally a bit of a snooze fest with long drawn out stories that never went anywhere.

Oh, no worries, I knew you were talking about PC. :)

Unfortunately I never played The Operative. Judging by the screenshots I just looked at, it gives me 007 vibes.

Alas, I also am older now and don't have the time for games like I used to. And if I play for too long then I feel guilty about it. :p Such a shame. I used to play games All. The. Time. Not that that was a good thing.

For an artist or drafter, this will be the (very expensive) Christmas gift to get.

A consumer PC it is not. Not at this price and 4:3 ratio. But it is nevertheless a very beautiful and interesting machine. Bravo to MS for making something so inspiring.

You feel that way too? ;)
