The Surface Studio is one gorgeous computer, its very apple like in its elegant lines and function. My iMac with the giant bezels and large chin feels so old and outdated.

Microsoft is swinging for the fences and its shows, where as I feel Apple is complacent - I hope at least I'm wrong and tomorrow's event will surprise me

I don't think Apple is complacent; I think they have abandoned Mac. I hope I eat my words tomorrow, but I'm not optimistic.

Finally somebody who mentions that. Yes everything is interesting about the Surface Studio except the GPU is a joke.
The 980 is hardly a joke and it's a lot better than the GPU in even the highest end iMac. As has been explained earlier, it probably doesn't have the 10-series chips yet due to production for this thing and whatnot. They probably already had the 980s ready to go before the 10 came out. I'm sure it'll have it eventually since that's where everything is going right now.

This is an iMac killer.

Apple stopped innovating years ago.

Attractive it is. Affordable to the general (middle class) public it is not. It has to be about $2K to be an iMac killer. But it is most definitely a step in the right direction.

I was interested so I started checking out the specs. Pffttt, they actually put a headphone jack on it. Where is their "courage"?

Okay, that last line was funny.

But yeah, MS did a good job here.

Considering that Tim, Jon, Eddy and the rest use Macs every day, we know that they have not abandoned them, but it is very puzzling as to why they would be content to work with the same basic iMac form factor for 7 years now.

Apple's sole focus now is mobile, iPhones, that's where all the attention is - whereas my 5-year-old MBAir is still a great performer.

Great Apple machines still, yet no longer top of the game.

The Surface Studio is gorgeous! iMac now looks outdated and fat. And Apple suddenly looks so dumb by thinking a magic toolbar is innovation.

Yes a bit expensive, but iMac does not have a touch screen. So for the showcased usage scenario of design and art, this is a must get. MS is really targeting the creative professionals.

And for every smart person I know, I know twenty dumb ones. The operative part of my statement was ‘would ever want to’ (use Windows).

A few points:

• Most people I know who now use Windows only do so because they have to. Usually because they’re running some specialist software, or their employer hasn’t cottoned on that Macs are much cheaper to own in the long run (see IBM’s experience, and I imagine they know a bit about computers). Windows 10 seems to be particularly reviled among Windows users. Windows users always seem to moan constantly about their machines.

• The only group I can identify that solidly prefer Windows are gamers who build their own machines with high-spec graphics cards.

• User numbers don’t equal earnings: Apple’s machines occupy a high-end niche and profitability that Windows can only dream of. Perhaps these new machines will regain some of the ground.

• Having used Macs since 1985 (and Windows when forced) I can honestly say I have never known, or known of, anyone who has willingly switched from Mac to Windows. Whereas switching from Windows to Mac among high end/ higher earning users is now commonplace.

• The less affluent can only afford cheap PCs; the less well informed think they are somehow a bargain.

• MS under Balmer was driven into the lowest-common dominator, housing-estate/project world of personal computers. Hopefully Nadella doesn’t have the ego, charisma and aesthetic appreciation of a used car salesman.

Trust that clears things up.

I was not aware people are so poor in UK. In US everyone can afford Mac even the poorest of them (college students). And you are absolutely wrong about Macs being the most expensive machines around. For example the price for Dell Precision 7710 depending on options goes as high as $9500 (but with discounts sells for just $6200). And if feel really "affluent" you can buy Precision Tower 7000 Series (7910) for $50K+ (with 1TB RAM). And let's not mention Windows servers here for very few "affluent" people can afford the most expensive models.

Let's be clear about the terminology here. As far as desktop computers go, GPU in Surface Studio is a joke, GPUs in iMacs are travesty.

4500x3000 on a 980m? Are they serious?

Why can't they put in a 1060? Lower power use and as powerful as a desktop gtx 980!

I'm not going to disagree really. The 980M was what we were hoping to get in the current iMac!

Exactly, and Microsoft beats Apple there as well. Latest Windows phones can be hooked up to a monitor and keyboard and serve as a kind of desktop replacement.
LOL. Have you seen the situation on Windows Phone? It's done, and Microsoft have moved on as well. Microsoft's focus on mobile is on platform agnostic services, thus they are building al their products from Office to Cortana for iOS and Android. Windows Phone is done. A mobile platform where one of the biggest internet company (Google) refused to develop apps for is dead in the water.

Apple is resting on its laurels like in the 90s, this is what the iMac should be. iMac looks so out of place and outdated compared to this. Wow.
Really? Having one of the most efficient and powerful mobile SoC is "sitting on its laurels"?
Apple is focused on its vision. Steve Jobs always said that Apple is making computers for the mere mortals. Right now, that means mobile, and Apple bet on mobile.
Both companies are innovating, just on different things.

Seems like people should be complaining about Microsoft prices on memory, or is that reserved for Apple only? I like what MS is doing, but the studio clearly isn't priced for the average consumer.

Since when is Apple about raw hardware power? Apple was always about the experience not numbers. iOS experience in larger screen formats is outdated and limited, Apple is completely visionless there.

I agree, this is a game changer, I hope it moves the Apple product to be more competitive...
however, I am looking at the Microsoft (Australia) sight, they don't even mention the studio? Availability? Price?
