Again FOR YOU. You constantly generalize that what works for you HAS to be the way it works for everyone, and it will never change. Absolutely no way anyone can use an iPad/Touchscreen, and be productive, because I know what's best for all.

Another of Apple's great marketing accomplishments - successfully convincing people there's no drawback to removing tactile feedback

I'm a 21 year old if that counts? And that really would be hell haha!

Yes, because you didn't have a device like an iPad [Or Galaxy, or whatever else you prefer] in your hand at age 11 or 12. Just like I didn't have a laptop when I was 11 or 12, because they didn't even exist. Meaning, that as kids are exposed to these technologies they'll eventually dictate how companies will adapt new technologies.

You're naive. These trends do change corporate culture. By your logic everyone would still be on mainframes/green screens...

That's a substantial stretch.

Sounds like you're the one who's a bit sensitive. You're pushing product names, and solutions for you argument [iWork vs. Office, etc.]. My original argument is that what is being done right now, isn't necessarily the way it will be in the near future. The idea of "my way is the best way for everyone" is ridiculous.

Again, I don't care about everyone. A few undergrad students choosing to use an iPad exclusively isn't going to change anything. If anything, it's just going to piss their professors off when the turn in a .doc file from Pages and the margins and preset headings are all screwed up. You need to stop this whole "don't speak for everyone" nonsense when it should be clear to most that I'm obviously not talking about every person ever.

Also, you're assuming that the only thing done on a tablet is word processing and spreadsheets. Again, you're implying what you do, is what everyone does, so my way is best...

You want to play this game? Fine. There is not a tablet out there that can handle SAP or Oracle, the two largest business database software systems available, and a growing choice for corporate America. Is your son interested in a field in MIS? He better get a laptop or rent one out, because he will fail his courses with an iPad. What are his options if he needs to use something as simply as Access? An iPad, and every tablet available, is incredibly limited for specialized productivity software. PCs and Macs aren't.

I agree with your input, young Ser. And to your previous post about having a bit of everything, the problem that lies there is Apple not being friendly with other devices, while everyone else does play friendly with each other. Certainly sucks considering I love iMessage but iOS grew stale on me after 5 years.

Young I guess I still am.. Will be 28 Saturday ;)

yeah that is what keeps me at bay. Since I bounce around, I am in need of a service that will do the same. I believe icloud and iwork in the cloud will bring some of that functionality.

Here again in Apple's defense. They have their hardware and software designed they way their want and want you to use it. No problem with that. That is unless you want to use it differently, they you have problems. Apple can control the experience in their environment, that is why they limit outside interaction. Only the future knows if this will hurt them later or not, but I believe people will want to be able to roam.

I used to think Google was the king in this arena. You could find them everywhere. Now, they are pulling back. Microsoft is making strives to put out as if they don't, they will lose big time. Apple, they are good since they have millions but what if those millions move on or integrate with others?

I am more puzzled by the app developers who limit themselves to one camp... More revenue my tail. You have a lot of people who roam and still want to support you. Yet you are not where we want... So, we move on. We move on to service that is supported on all platforms. I'm looking at you runkeeper. I really liked you then I moved. You where there for a moment and you left me. I moved on to Endomondo. It is everywhere for the most part. I continue to recommend it, even to the people I introduced to run keeper are moving to Endomondo. I am still pissed, I almost dispise emails from RunKeeper, lol.

Another thing for app developers, you are in a sea of MILLIONS OF APPS... Ummm, small fish in a large pond. You have the power and opportunity to not lead, not follow in other ecosystems. YOu can be the big fish in the pond and gain new and old customers. .

Baghdad Bob!

At last I figured out who this Microsoft guy reminded me of. It's Baghdad Bob!

I have read a couple of posts on this thread that stated that features were removed in the latest desktop versions of iWork. I checked out Numbers and it has the same features as before but it now has additional functions and filters. I wish it had added pivot tables.

What was removed from the package?

I'll give you one example that I spent 2 hours on last night in Numbers. You can't adjust margins around a document! Now way! It just defaults to an inch and a half. In fact the entire document inspector has been removed. And you can't reopen the new numbers file with the old Numbers to fix it.

I think that the apple fans saying that the latest iWork is good have not had a chance to put it through it's paces. My latest theory is that apple stripped out features so that their native Apps would match the features and consolidated/simplified interface of their Web apps.

This appears worse than Final Cut because at least the stripped down new version of FC had a solid engine and framework to build upon.

I think Apple has it right. Keeping tablets and work computers separate, but complementary is much better than trying to jam them together.

Do accounting/finance department at Apple headquarter use Numbers?

They definitely don't use Excel. Excel has some serious problems that can get very expensive. For example, automatically changing what you enter to be "helpful".

RT is better in the way that you can open two apps side by side. And it's unfortunately true that Office is the standard, if I made my CV or something with Pages people would have no way of opening it. Unless I saved it as PDF but then it's not editable. I wished that Microsoft started supporting ODF format more but you can't save or open ODF documents with Office for Mac.

That was contradictory. You quoted that the Surface and Surface 2 are cheaper, then go on to criticise Microsoft for their over-priced software. What?! I'd hate to imagine what the world would be like if Microsoft didn't make significant profit off their globally-leading productivity software to bail out Apple in the 90s. And the grounds they did it? FOR THE COMPETITION. Apple simply wants to eliminate competition with patent wars and make profit off its servants with exclusivity.

Also your OS and iWork software has and never will be free. They sneak it in the premium you pay for your device.

Still cranking out that old chestnut of a lie?

Or you could save it as a .docx and they could open it and edit it.

You say you don't care about everyone, and you're right. That was my original argument I made about your post. You're finally catching on...

A few? Okay, I'll give you that because I said my son and a few of his friends [high school by the way]. But if I recall not long ago it was "just a few" people who started bringing in their own phones to work? Then it was a laptop here/there...then before you know it, BYOD is the buzz. Granted it has a ways to go, and there are inherent issues with certain things, and won't argue that. Regardless, you made my point. 10 years ago people said the same things you just did about tablets [iPad's et-al]. It won't make a difference and it will piss the executives off. Now it's the norm.

I never said that a tablet is out to replace every desktop. My original argument is that a younger generation is working on these types of devices, and are quite comfortable with them. Over time, this will change how things are done. You said my statement about mainframes were a stretch..really? I remember when CAD work could only be done on a high powered workstation. I know, because I was doing it in 1987. There's NO WAY you can do that kind of work on a PC!? Huh, 1992 rolls around, and we were doing it on a PC. Then it was the same argument about doing it on a laptop...now it's a tablet. The latter is pretty painful, but it is getting there. And companies do adapt to trends, etc. You'll eventually realize that at some point.

If you don't want people thinking you're not speaking for everyone, then you should articulate that better. Because it all came off as stand offish, and as matter of fact.

What you fail to understand is that just as you "roam" to any "product pastures" you want, some people may CHOOSE to stick with a particular brand or product because they Damn well LIKE IT or WANT TO. What do you know about what each person's reasons are?

All these animal and sheep analogies are being misused to try and bully people who have strong opinions for a company or product.

And not even sure where the "Big Bad Wolf" comes into this... To me that just smacks of a consumer who can't make his mind up.

There is nothing wrong with being where you want to be. Don't get your underwear stained and in a bunch. If you read any my other posts, I was an advocate for people finding their place and being content there no matter where trends were going.

I personally like to use all good products. Culturally, a person is more rounded and understanding when they visit others to learn, play, and teach. Most who sit back in one zone sometimes have distorted visions, understandings, and answers. They sometimes judge situations with nothing but basis assumptions and what they do know. This is scary to me. I personally get paid to stay on the edge and have a solution, so I am always reading, trying, testing, etc. I will say that I personally enjoy being in a windows environment more, but I am at ease going to any other environment too. I have found that I can and have problems with all of them. Is it the environment or is it me??? I am always asking the question and seeking more. This has lead to a mixed environment where I jump to the best tool for the task at hand. End they end that is what they are... tools... They are not friends or family members that have feelings... No matter how much I want to love and protect my little tech darlings, they are cold gadgets. I must treat them as such. Technology should enhance our lives not cause community strife and ridicule.

So back to your point is that I do not "fail to understand" what you want to do. I get it. I really do. I am more speaking for myself and to others who are not content in their personally selected environment enough that they have to bash others with biased opinions, unrealistic assumptions, and impassionate reviews/testing of competitors products. What is the worst you may like it.. or not. It did or did not work for you... Simple, at least to me it is :)

Stay thirsty my friends... Dos Equs??? What, I don't even drink, LOL!

Take care ! (that's better)

I think Apple has it right. Keeping tablets and work computers separate, but complementary is much better than trying to jam them together.

The good news is that we have enough variety out there to try both. As the computing power grows and battery life improves, perhaps Apple will give it a whirl.

MS shows us what its made of

There is a new king of snark and he works for Microsoft

So, in your opinion, the biggest advantage that Surface has over the iPad is that it can also be used as a poor laptop. :D

So, the biggest difference between you and me is I'm objective and your emotional.

I never said the Surface was a poor laptop. Ever. That's your subjective opinion and you've likely never used it so you're trolling.

Trolling.

If you are accounting for billions of dollars, you would not use excel. I suspect they are using a puka accounting system such as SAP or the like.

That said, i suspect most accounting departments use very little of excel as the accounting packages tend to do pretty good reporting and counting nowadays.
