Ballmer could make it seem so droll and unexciting not even the biggest MS fanboy could muster more than a meh.

Indeed. The typically-ear-piercing Apple haters that rule the Engadget comments board with an iron fist had reactions last night that ranged from the subdued "meh" you mention to embarrassed silence.

Instead of showing them all the much-dreamed-about Apple killer (Apple...they hates itsssss!) they anticipated with dizzy rapture (per their comments the previous night when news of a Ballmer tablet announcement made the rounds), he passed some corporate gas on stage and called it a night.

The silence, as they say, was deafening.

Not even a Paul Thurrott or an AidenShaw could have found much to be happy about last night.

He's almost cringe-worthy to watch there

Almost???

the assertion is that MS in a panic decided to start using the term publicly before a competitor and given the facts of history it's hard to think of another explanation.

The Winbots will find a way. They always do.

This comment pretty much summed it up:

Anything involving windows or Microsoft is poison. This company is for losers only.

You have just earned your place on my ignore list - this is the first time in history that I've ever had to use it.

Why do I need to know that? Later.

Anyway . . .

A part of me keeps thinking "this just can't be it." This must be some sort of deliberate obfuscation by MS. I mean, after all these years, after having Apple as an example of how to do it right, after witnessing Apple's reveal strategies firsthand, after suffering through the Vista humiliation and the WinMo disaster, you just had to have thought that MS would take the earliest opportunity to come surging back with something truly exciting and forward-thinking. You just have to think that MS would have said " Wait a minute,we have twice as many people, twice the resources, twice the R&D budget. We should be doing it a lot better and a lot easier (with cash to spare) than the next guy!"

Ballmer keeps boasting about their R&D budget. Where the hell is all the money going? Trying to pay off manufacturers to feature Bing as default search?? Alright, it's nice to see MS developing the Xbox platform, great. So where is THAT going? MS has some interesting projects but no real focus or direction. Too many "partners" with varying ideas about hardware, etc. No actual mission statement or goal aside from pushing Windows and going on about PC sales improving, etc.

I bought the second monitor you give as evidence of an apple "rip-off." GUESS WHAT? That HP monitor came out BEFORE the apple 24" LED monitor. You should get your facts straight fanboy.

Are you for real? Hint: Apple's 24" LED wasn't the first Apple product to use that form factor. In fact, it had been in use for over four years before that.

Dude, Ballmer displayed a small, thin device running full Windows 7 and played video in WMP 12 on it.

Unless Apple delivers full OSX on an iPhone thin device at the 10" size, it's over.

Are you guys seriously going to argue some inflated iPhone OS (which has been blogged to death as this device would be) is going to even touch a HP device running Windows 7? Do you guys believe Apple will have more of a chance in e-print than Amazon?

100,000 apps vs 4 million?

And let's talk price, I mean really, if $1000 is the going price point, do you really think people are going to buy a iPhone OS machine over a Windows 7 machine at the same price point?

Sure there are things Apple could do to make their device head and shoulders over what Ballmer showed but did they? Who knows.

But for once, Apple is copying the PC industry, tablets have been around since 2001 and last night, Apple got smoked.

Sorry guys but just because I own some Apple products I just can't lie to myself. Apple must be amazing in a few weeks to avoid the pitfall of being called fat and lazy due to the success of iPods.

What Apple needs to do to survive this HP Slate blow:

1) Full OSX
2) App Store integration
3) Phone built in (speaker phone also)
4) iChat (with video)
5) Thin as iPhone
6) And at least 1 new feature on par with the "wow" legacy of Apple product launches.
7) Not named iSlate since Ballmer set a huge land mine

If Apple can deliver on the 7 points above then yes they win.

Yes. Because as has been proven in the marketplace, a device without full keyboard and mouse input that runs a full-scale OS always beats the ones that don't.

Oh, wait. In fact, the market has demonstrated precisely the opposite. Whoops!

I think Apple's tablet will be geared more towards entertainment - magazines, apps, etc. If that's the case, they wouldn't have to do much to adjust the iPhone OS to fit a larger screen. I recall an article saying that Apple contacted some app developers to ready their apps for testing on a larger screen.

If this thing comes with a stylus, I can see it being big in the medical field, too - digital forms, patient records, etc.

Not even a blurb about the virtues of W7's Multi-Touch - blissfully surprising.

Shorter thread:

Apple is teh Wonder
MSFT & HP suck

My god this forum is becoming a waste of time.

lots of stuff

I agree with pretty much everything what you say, if Apple will bring tablet with ARM prosessor and iphone OS, Apple has "lost" this, but if there comes tablet with x86 processor and full OS X, then maybe this might be getting intresting..

I myself need small tablet what I can take with me and just chillout for a while at cafe or something like that and I prefer to have good operating system on it.. I don't want to use appstore hell elsewhere than in my iphone..

Exciting? Forward-thinking??? When you said "MS" did you mean Microsoft?

Thin?

LOL!

Double LOL!!!

The LOLs keep coming!

Ah, you threw the religious card. Well-played!

Nice to see Microsoft employees are still joining the MacRumors forums.

I knew there had to be one person out there excited about the HP slab demo. Looks like we found him.

...don't worry, if an Apple iTabletSlatePod comes out you can run Windows 7 on it!

Does anyone actually believe that Steve Jobs is:

a) alive

b) going to give a keynote

In all seriousness...

Well, you have to understand that he has some valid points? "iSlate" will sell even if it has iPhoneOS but it will never get "far" if it has slimmed down environment and not full operating system.

In all seriousness...

Phil Schiller: "So we're releasing this new iSlate - TOMORROW"
(cue woops and hollers from the masses)

...one more thing, Steve's dead. Sorry about that...

?!

iPhone OS is a full operating system designed for handhelds.

HP w2207w: Released in January 2007

Apple LED Cinema Display: Released October 2008

Considering that the OP was comparing those two monitors and calling HP a rip-off... I roll my eyes at you sir. All of apple's monitors before that were silver bordered (like the current 30").

You better hope for your own happiness that Apple delivers something with at least OSX on it. It will be hard to justify why they could not do so when the so called non-innovative MS and HP show a working demo of a small device running full Windows 7, not XP, not CE, not Mobile, but the real deal.

Does OSX support touch? I am not sure as I have no reason to upgrade from 10.5.8

I am sure at least Apple's product will look ok.
